Authorised service providers may use the dent as an excuse to refuse a repair under warranty (exactly the same happened to me, when they refused to replace a screen because of a similar-sized dent)

I wouldn't count on even Apple's service in North America, let alone other countries. Maybe you should double check if it's going to be a problem in Apple Store beforehand? And maybe document the issue so that you have a proof it happened now and not right before you went to a service centre (hopefully you'll never have to)?

Ahh so what about applecare here? If OP buys applecare, why can't he just get a whole replacement unit? Would be cheaper than fixing?

That absolutely sucks. I assumed because it covered accidental damage for phones it would cover it for macs as well... So 350USD for purely hardware related faults? That doesn't seem like a good deal at all.

Here's what you do. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar. Bring it in. Explain what happened. Ask if there's a way to repair/replace the case, and ask what it'd cost. Of course - there's not. But ask anyway.

Now here's the catch. If I were you, I'd find a store that has stock of the same unit if possible. You may get lucky and they may swap it out. If they don't have em on-hand, there's a limit to what they can do for you. Since you say specced out, you may be in a bind, so you may want to wait till stock is more readily available - but then you lose the "just got it" sympathy response.

Would OP still be able to return the device considering it falls with the 14 day return policy?

Backpacks with the side zipper are the absolute WORST! I have forgotten to zip mine a few times and had similar problems. Thankfully nothing too major but yeah, dents similar to yours. I threw the backpack away because I can't trust myself. I forget too often. I was so excited about getting a backpack like this too. Lesson learned on my part, I suggest you throw yours away too. :p

Or maybe donate it to charity? Kinda stupid to throw away a perfectly good backpack.

meh, it's just a cosmetic defect. Your laptop functions just as well as anyone else's (with the same specs). Don't worry about it. Plus, now it's officially battle tested so you don't need to baby it.

His laptop looks like TechRax just got finished with it. Just a bit more than a cosmetic defect - which would usually be a scratch here or there. Plus, if you plan on selling it, no one's going to buy that without some incredibly large discount.

dude, i dropped my iphone 7 on DAY ONE resulting in a slight crack on the bottom left.

Because of that, i totally didnt bother with getting a case / screen protector and I love the phone even more now in its naked goodness...

Usually i'd baby it and get a fat case.

Enjoy your MBP!

Same thing here. Bought an Iphone 6S plus earlier on this year. Dropped it running out of the house on concrete. Damaged the corners and mildly scratched the screen. I'm extremely happy i don't have to molly coddle it now and enjoy it in its naked non encased glory.

I did also buy applecare though so i'll have an 'incident' early next year :p

What case do you recommend?
First, I would look at the type of style you like. Pick a case that you're going to love, something that makes your computer look even better than it does naked. And just make sure it's protective. You can tell if it's protectivee by reading the specs (Case manufacturers love to brag about how protective their cases are) so if there is a line that talks about that then you will know it's a protective case and also read the reviews and don't buy anything cheap. A good case will cost you at least $40 on the minimum.

I'm a huge fan of the Speck cases because I love their style and they have awesome protection. http://www.speckproducts.com/apple/...k-pro-retina-15-cases/MBPR-15-ST.html#start=2

Speck doesn't have cases for the new mac's yet but they should have some pretty soon and theirs will be the ones I will get.

Kind of interesting reading about stuff like this because I am actually more clumsy than my friends. I drop my phones more than they do but I don't break them. My friend recently dropped his phone once for the first time in like a year and boom shattered screen and some minor dents and scratches all over the phone. I drop my phone about once per month and my phone is in perfect like new condition, because I have a good case and screen protector on it.

Do this.

Yes. They'll take it back.

I don't think so. Whilst the OP could say he is excercising his right to return the unit because he is unhappy with it, part of the deal is to return the unit without user inflicted damage just like with any return item.

Best bet here is to play to Apple sympathy.

I don't think a Speck case would have made much of a difference here. Apart from the Speck case also being broken.
Do't get me wrong, I always use Speck (or the likes) on my MacBooks and they are great to protect from scratches and minor bumps, but a fall like this? Don't think so.

I'm in the Apple store now. I asked them how much it would be to replace the top case + screen; they said they didn't know since the parts are so new they haven't even arrived yet. But they said judging by how much a similar repair costs for the 2015 MBP, it'd probably be a total of ~$800. Yikes.

Anyway, I'm not going to try to return it or anything. One, I seriously doubt they would take it. Two, this is my own dumbassery and I take responsibility. Three, it's honestly fine, the damage hasn't affected any functions and in a weird way it actually makes me more attached to my Mac, in a "you're mine now!" kind of way.

I was the most worried about any hidden internal damage, but the Genius Bar folks just ran diagnostics and they said everything was fine.

You are way too centered to be on Macrumors :)

Do you have home contents insurance? Mine covers loss, damage, theft of certain items outside of the home such as phones, tablets and laptops. Might be worth a try.

Friend of mine dropped his MacBook Air during the return period.
He then damaged the packaging on purpose and called Apple for a new unit claiming shipping damage.
Not legal and wrong, but it actually worked out.
