Put a case on it. I can't imagine having a $2,000+ laptop without any case. Accidents are bound to happen.

It's sad, really. I had just visited the local computer store to get a case yesterday -- as fate would have it, they had none in stock.

Welp.

That physically pained me to see - still feel uncomfortable just thinking about it. So sorry, pal really feel bad. As you say, silver lining in that it still works fine - seems Apple's bulletproof build quality to the rescue at least.

I don't think insurance (whether it be home, credit card or something else) covers cosmetic damage. What I definitely know is that my insurance has never covered cosmetic.

American Express covers loss, theft or damage for 90 days plus adds on another year of warranty. Used it when I dropped my iPhone, Blu Ray player while installing it and when my girlfriend dropped my new Montblanc causing a sizable dent. All technically worked but were cosmetically flawed. The new Chase Sapphire Reserve is 120 days for same coverage.

OP I would double check with the company you bought the laptop with.

I balanced my 2015 MacBook Pro on the edge of my empty bathtub so that I could have something to read while I was doing my business. It was unbalanced and fell backwards into the bath.

That was almost a year ago. I have had zero problems with it. There is some minor cosmetic damage to the case that I've stopped noticing now -- not as bad as the OP's.

So, yes, these things are pretty robust.

I'm going to hit up the Genius Bar tomorrow and see what they quote me for a case replacement, just for kicks. Will let you all know. But honestly will probably just live with the damage. Kind of liberating now that I don't have to worry about keeping it perfect ;)
They don't do case replacements. It's simply not possible to replace the case. The display is glued to the display assembly so that comes as one big piece. Display assembly alone costs $800+. Bottom case similar story, battery is glued to the case and is impossible to remove without damaging it.

What? If OP wanted this to be repaired, it would be a top case and display replacement. Totally possible even with glued batteries. It won't be cheap but no harm in getting a quote and there's a chance of goodwill.

And I don't know where you got the $800+ figure from for the display; that's way more than it really is.

Doesn't top case replacement include replacement of the trackpad, keyboard, touch bar, and battery? Yeah that'd be pricy.

meh, it's just a cosmetic defect. Your laptop functions just as well as anyone else's (with the same specs). Don't worry about it. Plus, now it's officially battle tested so you don't need to baby it.

Oh that does suck! Had similar with an iPad air. It was on the counter and my wife knocked it off and dented the corner. It was never a problem in terms of the iPad but it always nagged at me a little. I feel for ya!

Don't use a sexy MacBook with a case. You bought a slim device...and you put sncsse on it? If you drop a MacBook, a case doesn't help you much. Why do you buy a MacBook if you want a case?

Which credit card did you use? Some card benefits from accidental damage and will pay up to a certain amount. I recommend looking into that.

Ex: Chase Sapphire Reserve:

  • Can repair, replace or reimburse you for eligible items in the event of theft or damage when items are purchased with an eligible Chase card or with rewards earned on an eligible Chase card
  • Eligible personal property that has been damaged, stolen, or involuntary and accidental parting with property within 120 days from the date of purchase.
    • Up to a maximum of $10,000 per claim and up to $50,000 per account

You can call it a battle scar. At long as it lasts you the general 5 years that laptops can usually last, you'll accumulate a few more of those I'm sure.

Same thing happened to my 2015 15", but about a month after purchase. I have the dent on both the screen and base like yours too.

It still works flawlessly. I unscrewed the bottom case and everything looked fine.

Mine dropped from waste height onto a hardwood floor. It was even in a sleeve I bought from Amazon...

Moral of the story - don't buy cheap sleeves from Amazon.

I would have thought the moral of the story is not to drop your laptop from a considerable height. I don't think many, if any, sleeves would provide much protection from that high.

And logic board (CPU, GPU, RAM, SSD) , because the Touch ID is tied to the secure enclave and currently cannot be separated. Apple does not do any repairs on these models currently and they'll likely ask you to get a new one, unfortunately.

my suggestion is dont spend a penny..you will get used to it..and you do not need to worry any more about future falls...trust me you will get used to it...

it happened with my laptop last year(Not Mac). Airport guys caused heavy scratches on my Black Dell 7559. It was just two days old..they are heavy visible scratches. i cried for 3 days..but finally got used to it...

If you bought the MBP on a credit card, you may be covered by insurance. likely will be an expensive repair for basically cosmetic damage as will need new top case and and display (lid assy).

You could always see if a hard case will still fit. Sorry for your bad luck, on such a long awaited item.

Q-6

It's probably quite expensive, because they have to replace the display as well as the top case.
