You know since its made out of aluminum if you took the everything out of the chassis you would be able to bang that all out and back to its original shape.

Unfortunately his speaker grill is broken so not entirely. But it's a great idea if he has the time for it.

if money is any issue i would keep this one. it works fine. better use it for two/three years and buy a new MBP then. who cares how it looks? it's still a great notebook.

I care how it looks! It's not like I'm going to need to sell a kidney to get a new laptop (though that might be a good idea...) ... but at this point, moving to an undamaged 17" is more important than having a D90, 18-200mm, 50mm f/1.4 and some other stuff.

I have almost the same setup except the 18-200mm (i just have the kit lens) but why buy all that gear just to take it back. Use it to make some $$$!

You can probably use ethernet via a USB ethernet adapter ;-)

It doesn't look much better, but at least I am able to close the lid and use the ethernet port.

Let me get this straight.

A head high fall directly on the edge of your computer and that is all that happened? On top of that you were slinging it over your shoulder that added some speed to the fall?

I would say the fact you can turn it on and use it is a testament, actually, to the durability of the machine. The case absorbs the energy impact to save the guts. Nice.

Honestly, I think you can hammer the metal back in place. It won't be perfect, but it will work because the casing is quite bendable. Place a towel on top of the laptop and gently hammer it back.

You next best option is to part the machine.Since your internals are all fine, I'm guessing you'll be able to at least fetch half the value back.

The other issue is you spend a fortune on these things and if something rare like this happens it is almost all over with and you have to start again, I have been thinking of getting one of the new White ones with the 9400M chip for $999 it is not bad if something happens, buy parts off ebay and start fixing. I have a Unibody MB and a couple of times it almost slipped out of my hands, I would say if something happens to the screen your totally finished because of the glass being one solid piece.

Ouch and good luck

What Apple essentially did in designing the unibody was make out-of-pocket repairs cost more money.

Perhaps there's a reason certain types of equipment should be built using more than one section. ;)

I read the keyboard is also much more expensive to replace as well. Three years ago, I broke 2 keys on my keyboard (my fault) and it cost around $150 (USD equivalent at the time) to get a new keyboard from Apple and have it installed. I'd hate to ask what a new keyboard would cost today.

Officially, the keyboard is a part of the top case, which means a few hundred dollars to repair.

Unofficially, if you remove somewhere around 50+ screws, IIRC, you CAN replace the keyboard. It's just a pain in the ass.

I think is great news that you can actually use it and that everything works, it sucks that it's no longer in pristine condition, but I would keep it though.

HOLY BOLOGNA. That is a scary first pic. I am so sorry for your loss. :(

So are you gonna put it on eBay? If you do, mind link us over so we can see what it sells for? I'm sure you'll get at least 900+

Yeah, I'd love to know the price you're aiming for. The charity group I work for here at Hong Kong sure need some computers, and though we agree Macs are HOT, we don't mind damaged ones.

So if the price is right, We might be interested. :)

I'm shooting for $1400 at this point. It was almost double that new, and it's totally functional.

I dropped my sony laptop 1 foot and the power button broke of and the whole side of the case cracked.

Options

I think it is time to scour ebay for spares/repairs macbook pro's, then hit ifixit and have a go....hey it may take you a weekend or longer but prob cheapest option for you.

I have taken my old MBP (not unibody) apart many times to replace / fit things etc, I do not think it would be that difficult to transfer the entire internal components over to be honest....am sure some others would disagree (and maybe I am mistaken)

Have a go anyway.....unless you earn several thousand dollars per day in which case - go unibody and perhaps use this for some other purpose / butcher it for components - and sell those individually - may fetch reasonable price - ram, logic board, hard drive, superdrive etc......

maybe you can hammer back some of the protruding part and see if you can get a higher price...fixing the lower case, 179 i think as posted before would be worth it as it will bump up the selling price.

1400 shipped >.>

BIN please and thank you. :D

What does BIN mean?

I'd do that, but my luck I'd end up breaking it worse. Then I'd would be worthless.

Oh my god....

Well at least the aluminum did its job and absorbed the shock, therefore protecting your internal parts. Most importantly all of your data is still intact.
