Simple fix. Just make the form factor thicker. Oh, wait a minute. Most people like the depth the way it is...
Yeah. I guess.

I mean the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 5s, which had the camera flush to the housing, had absolutely terrible sales right?

And that explains why the iPhone SE doesn't sell at all.

Of the aspects that make me lukewarm on the X, the notch is not even among them. The one minor irritation I have with it is that it leaves no room for battery %age.

notch
näCH/
noun
  1. 1.
an indentation or incision on an edge or surface.
"there was a notch in the end of the arrow for the bowstring"

Just so you even know what a notch is before posting a thread!

The notch never bothered me, however I'd like to see it reduced in size with each new model, in both depth & width.

The notch is NOT the reason I didn't get the X or don't like it.

Fugly. Camera. Abcess (it's gone far beyond just being an unsightly bump or boil on the back of the phone)!

No thanks!
Someone's a little bit obsessed with letting others know they dislike the camera bump, even in threads where it wasn't even the topic to begin with.....we get it...

I like the Notch. What's not to like?

One the phone? Doesn't bother me one bit. Then again, I mostly use my phone in portrait mode, so I'm aware that may play a role.

The camera bump disappears when you put a case on it, but if I was a caseless user it might bother me. Perhaps the alternatives would not be so desirable either: lower cameras specs so the camera group doesn’t protrude, or a thicker overall iPhone so the camera group can be fully contained? As far as compromises go, I’m okay with the current design.

The notch doesn’t bother me at all. The bezels on my old iPhone didn’t really bother me either, but what I like most about the iPhone X: I get a larger display and dual cameras without having to carry around and use a plus sized iPhone. The X is pushing my personal acceptable size for a smartphone, and the 8+ greatly exceeds it.

Sure, the topic was not the camera…it was the notch. But the topic was presented as if it included me or my reasonings.

I'm actually fine with the notch. Don't really care one way or the other, but it's not the reason I rejected the X. And OP shouldn't bundle me in with that.

I hate notch, and this is pretty much my only reason to not buy iPhone X alongside price and size (too small to hold at hand).

And yes, bezel is ok, even if it is huge. Anyone using a phone with a case is using a phone with a bezel anyway.

OK, I'll bite re: this subject, again, lol. The notch is an abomination. So much rationalization over it. What other screen in the history of screens, on any device (and the Essential Phone) has a ridiculous notch cutting into visible screen area? I still bought the X because I'm not ready to use Android exclusively, but my Pixel 2XL is bringing me damn close. Watching Stranger Things on Netflix there are black bars on both sides of the X. With the Pixel 2XL this show by default is displayed at 18:9 and takes up the entire screen, no bars, no notch. So much nicer than on the X.

I can't defend the notch or Apple. Pictures say it all. The notch is just fugly as hell as is the home toggle bar on the bottom. And the ears are wasted space too. Sure the Pixel has larger bezels, but it doesn't interfere with content on the screen in any way...as it should be.

During most usage the notch wasn't really an issue for me, however I didn't like the way IOS 11 utilises it in some regards, you have less info available at a glance. I might have got used to this if I had kept the device though. My major gripe was when viewing videos, some apps default to 18:9 and IMHO it ruins any "immersive" experience with the notch there. I would have preferred to just have small bezels like on a Pixel 2 XL which I think make far more sense.

I agree with everything you said! It just would have made more sense if Apple had a thin bezel that ran along the top with the cameras and sensors. The Notch cuts out screen content. Why?

Between the two photos, I'd prefer the Pixel 2 XL. However, both devices seem to have huge side bezels too.

When I watch video full screen or your photos, the NOTCH ruins it all. It looks terrible. For all other things, It's not a bother at all.

But if you have any iPhone before the X you basically have 2 notches limiting screen visibility.... Just a thought.
0 iPhones have had any of their advertised screen size and visibility covered by a notch. What are you talking about?

The notch should have its own app.

The notch not enhancing the IOS user experience in general usage or with apps is the main issue. Those of us who don’t like or hate the notch would probably have a bit more appreciation if it actually did improve the user experience.

The faceid tech =\= the notch

Sorry but the X looks much more appealing than that wannabe Galaxy that Google put out. Huge head and chin bezels and rounded corners for no reason. You also need a purse to carry it around. Looks more like a phone from 2011 than 2017.

The Majority of us are not engineers and we likely don't fully understand why Apple implemented the notch in its entirety. But we obviously know that it houses the sensors, cameras and speaker. Can we definitively say that we know the Notch doesn't need to exist based on all the hardware behind the notch?

I respect your reply, but if you look at how the space is utilized on the iphone you’ll see that there is much screen real estate with less body and you can also have more info (time, battery life, connection)

Just when you thought the notch horror was over, another thread.

And probably never will be. Looking at the Apple Ibrow is like looking at the flat tire on a Moto 360 which of course people still complain about.

If you take a symmetrical screen, and black out a part of it, many users eyes are going to be constantly drawn to it and for some they can't get used to that. If flat-screen monitors or for example the note 8 competitor puts Ibrows on their screens i'm pretty sure you would hear a uproar.

My older iphone has more real screen space than the iPhone X.

The 5”8 inch screen is marketing talk.

And the bezels are not notches which make parts of the screen useless.

The appearance of the notch was never an issue with me. I really like the X in every way. However, the notch does prevent battery percentage from being displayed and that is an issue for me. I know it's just a swipe down from the top right to find the percentage, but I got used to, and liked just glancing at the phone to see if it needed to be charged.

You can still see where the battery charge is at a glance just not the percentages. If I think it might need charged then I will swipe down. I also set low battery on the home screen if I am away to keep the battery going longer if I can't get to a charging cord or my "hockey puck"
