After a week of owing the X I have no problem with the notch. I don't think I ever did until it became the talk of legend. It would be nice if it was smaller but it doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the phone. I don't watch a ton of video on it. I use my iPad for that. And I love the size of it over the Plus.

Agreed. I also have an iPad, and I'd rather watch video or play games on the larger iPad. That said I think video looks great on the X. I don't zoom video (would rather watch it uncropped in the native aspect ratio) so the notch doesn't interfere with video. I suppose if I did not own an iPad, I'd be more willing to carry the 8 Plus. As it is the iPhone X is already stretching my limits on how large a smartphone I'm willing to carry and use. I find myself using reachability more than I did on my iPhone 6 when I'm operating it one-handed, but it still feels more comfortable to operate with one hand than the 8 Plus.

I've had the X for more than a month now and the notch literally has caused me no angst. In fact I kind of think it helps distinguish the iPhone (with no harm to usability) from other phones much like the shape of the Apple Watch sets it apart from other smart watches.

But if you have any iPhone before the X you basically have 2 notches limiting screen visibility.... Just a thought.

Funny enough, the notch makes the X easy to identify. Occasionally I will walk by someone with their X out and notice the notch and it makes me feel like "oh I wish I had one of those". But quickly I come to my senses and am like "$1000....absolutely notch".

Completely agree. The notch is Apples trademarke to identify the iPhone without a doubt. I don't know necessarily that was their intention to do so, but it does separate the look from other smart phones. And it will least be here for another generation or two of iPhones.

Haven't you heard?
People are bored with their iPhones and iOS these days so they have to find something to do since they can't customize their home screens

In your attempt to be sarcastic, you actually hit the nail on the head. If the iPhone X could do half the things the Note 8 can do, there would be so much more to talk about on here. But when you get the same boring as fark platform year after blood clotting year, you run out of things to talk about and thus everything gets flogged to death.

Put a hundred people in a room for a year and get them to talk about every aspect of a push bike. Within a month these people will be regurgitating.

Then put the same people in a room and get them to talk about every aspect of the latest Ferrari. They will still be going after 3 years.

Granted, extreme scenario, but hopefully you get my point. People are flogging a dead horse on this site because the iPhone X is one dimensional. Two dimensions max. The Note 8 is 3 dimensional, 4 dimensions max.

The iPhone X was revealed at the beginning of September. The notch was shown then. Why are we still talking about it 5 months later? It is was it is.
Don’t like it? Fine. Doesn’t bother you? Great.
There’s really nothing else to say, but yet there seems to be a new thread every day rehashing the same thing over and over. Why?

So buy a Note 8, spend time on Android fan forums, and live happily ever after?

I don't mind the notch personally cause it looks different and I like that. I will say I had the iPhone 7 before and couldn't wait to get rid of the "waste of space" bezels but a funny thing happened after using the gesture controls on the X which to me kind of feel like they are tacked on/ afterthought in sake of design. I kind of miss using the home button and swiping up for control center instead of from the right corner which just doesn't feel right to me.

I can't defend the notch or Apple. Pictures say it all. The notch is just fugly as hell as is the home toggle bar on the bottom. And the ears are wasted space too. Sure the Pixel has larger bezels, but it doesn't interfere with content on the screen in any way...as it should be.

Pixel 2 XL with immersive mode enabled for Chrome:

Ok, pictures do say it all. Your pictures show me how you basically get the same sized screen, but Pixel 2 XL is a lot bigger in hand. Also, the X looks prettier to me.

So it just shows that Apple was smart not to go down that route.

Look, you X-haters are not going to convince anyone. You have every right to dislike Apple's design. Just stop trying to prove it's somehow "wrong". A simple "I don't like it" will suffice. Me? Love the design. Much better looking than Pixel.

Or maybe, Apple could make the ios a bit more interesting than what it has been for 10 years.

If you don't find iOS interesting after 10 years, then you're never going to find it interesting for the next version either. iOS has always been rather simplistic and basic for what it is, I don't see that drastically changing on an annual basis.

Notwithstanding the alternatives I’m guessing almost no one said ‘I want a notch’ therefore it’s reasonable to assume that a lot of people won’t like it, especially in the early days when the software hasn’t caught up.

Thats actually a major point... I'm constantly pulling out my phone and wondering which way the phone is. If that notch wasn't there I wouldn't be able to identify it and it would soon begin to annoy me lol.

I’m sure you’d see the port and speakers along the button edge in split second just like you used to do with the home button and know which way up was correct. It’s not a massive issue being reported by users of all screen Android devices so I don’t know why it would be difficult for iPhone users?

Not sure if you're trying to act cocky or not. But not all of us sit behind a computer desk with lights 24/7. Get yourself out in the dark sometime

Even in the dark the raise to wake feature will display your clock on your lock screen in two orientations. If it’s upside down you know your phone is. It should be as evident as the notch.

I'm not saying it isn't? I just find the notch because it's more distinguished and you can also turn the raise to wake feature off

No one has a say what Apple does in terms of design, even with the notch. It's just a matter of some don't like change at all and prefer things to stay a certain way. But that's not the reality of how technology is.

No wrong. It was not always simplistic and basic. The first three or four iterations of the iphone was the greatest thing since sliced bread. It was such a giant step forward from the software circa and pre 2007. Going from a Nokia to a 3Gs was like transforming from a homeless man to living in a penthouse. Or did you forget that? And I'm sure Apple can take another giant step forward. Seriously it's so long overdue.

Your Post highlights dated points and You can disagree with me all you want, but it doesn't change what we already know. iOS has always been the goal to keep it simplistic and basic. I would never go back to iOS from when it first started to where it is today. Given how it's improved with security enhancements, it's more intuitive and fluid, I could continue on and on. Does the current version of iOS have its flaws, yes; but neither was the first couple versions of iOS ideal either. But if you continue want to choose to defend iOS 10 years ago, by all means, please do, don't make it sound like it was something that everybody else would want to live with today, because they don't. Time to move forward.

I actually like the notch. The only instance where it could slightly annoy me is in widescreen having videos letterboxed slightly so that not all the screen is used. But the stellar HDR viewing experience makes up for that.

It's not a feature - it's simply because Apple had to cram all those sensors somewhere but I never find myself hating it.

All relative. Ios 10 years ago was the beas knees relative to the competition. And 10 years later it's so much more refined, as you would expect it to be. But 10 years later, notwithstanding the gradual refinement over time, it's as boring as bat crap. Seriously, what is wrong with giving users the OPTION to customise? It won't be any skin off your nose. Is Apple incapable of continuing the gradual refinement and adding customisation features at the same time?

Most Apple users tend to be older and more affluent than android users. I'm sure Apple keeps iOs largely the same so as not to confuse some of its customer base.

I had a Galaxy S8 which I considered unusable out of the box. I had to disable, uninstall and rearrange features, and generally tweak it for ages to be worth using. And there was still a redundant button on the left-hand side I had no use for.

I like how simple iOs is. If I ever get bored I play around with different widgets on the one screen that they're allowed or maybe just change my wallpapers.

Judging by your post, perhaps iOS is not for you anymore. Obviously it's not going to change in the ways you are expecting. Some are content with the consistent behavior with iOS over the years and others are not, it's just the way it is. iOS cannot be in tune to everything everybody wants.
