I think it's cool. It makes it look like you doodled on it. Kind of like the cover of a notebook in school or something. Definitely eye-catching and personalized.

Thanks I like it. It took me 3 weeks to figure out what i wanted. I know i was trying to please the general audience with it but only myself. It cost me 30 bucks... not bad.

Got mine done a couple months back here in Singapore. Inspired by Incidentist's own laser etching on his PowerBook. Plus I did my name in the lower left hand corner in Helvetica.

A General Question

Listen up my friends, I'm curious. I wouldn't mind getting my new MBP engraved (as soon as the redesigned model comes along) but what are the implications for resale?

Is it extremely hard to sell an engraved model if I decide to a year or two later? Is there anyway to *reverse* the process or would I have to completely replace the upper case and if so how much would that cost?

I know if I engraved a picture or design then there might be a few people out there who'd actually think it was cool and be willing to buy it BUT I was thinking of engraving my NAME on it! (Just under the Apple logo.) I wonder how many people there are out there called Neutral Gamer ... :D

That's excellent. I like the way you've actually used the Apple logo as part of the image you've engraved. Very nice indeed. :)

I haven't looked into it myself but what about jewellers? Surely they'd have machines to do this?
Either way I kinda don't like the OP's etching. I just wouldn't put my name on it like that but I'm not opposed to a graphic or something subtle.

Am I the only one that thinks that 99% of etching jobs no nothing more than ruin a perfectly good MacBook Pro? And the other 1% makes me think, "Yeh, that's cool, but you still ruined your laptop."

What do you think of this???:apple:

really? it looks like the notebook of a 14 year old girl from 1997. and very ugly.

like anything, a few people do things like laser etching and they can look cool then everyone jumps on the bandwagon, it's the next cool thing, and thousands of people with zero design skills start etching total nonsense onto their laptops.

hey, it's your laptop, your money, but sometimes things are better left as they are for a reason.

actually, this whole etching thing is a lot like tattoos. you used to see tattoos and they were interesting or well done. now you see more and more tattoos that are exactly the same, or ****** designs or really badly done. nautical stars, anyone?

and and dude who did the design that looked black. it looks like an abstract swastika dude. not cool.

p.s nod3 has actually managed something smart and interesting, so well done there.

Where in Spore did you do this?

Hey n0d3, how much does it cost for that in spore? How long does it take? I'll be heading spore in couple of months,... thinking of doing it there!

Cheers!

That is insane, I'm glad i registered here to learn more about my Mac (new user!). Anyone got a clue to where I can find a reliable Laser Etching place in London? Somewhere around the Central Area would be awesome.

if you haven't found a place yet... there's a place in Holborn called razorlab - i think they actually do the engraving in North London they said but look at their website - razorlab.co.uk looks good

I am not sure if this has been mentioned, but why not get a vinyl sticker put on. You can get it cut in any possible formation you can think of. Its not permanent, and it looks great. I have seen it for phones such as the razr, but its definately an option that is resale safe

This is somewhat what i am talking about, but i mean the sticker is cut out, not one solid sticker.

$15 for LASER etching is a nice deal.
But it's a very small design. $15 sounds almost reasonable.

On the contrary, it’ll make it easier to find/spot.
Which will make it harder to steal. It's one thing to have a nondescript laptop, it's another to have one with a design where everyone knows who the owner is, like if you're at a party. Like mine. :D

(and I might note, even better if it's your name that's engraved on it)

hear that flushing sound? that's your re-sale value.
Most people who get their laptops engraved don't usually resell it. I'm not planning on reselling mine, at any rate. In fact, I'm hoping the blackbook cases stay the same so I can pull off the one I have now and reuse it on my next laptop.

Was thinking of doing mine again (look above) as I just got a new 17", but just for identification purposes, e.g. my name.

Anybody has any ideas for a nice font/place to etch my name?

Not my cup of tea.

Now there were linked pictures of etched MBPs that looked stunning particularly this one

To each his own and good luck with it. Hopefully the drawing won't get old or tiresome, because like a tattoo its there for good.

so i got excited when i saw this and I drew up my own design, i still need to find someone to engrave it, but let me know what you think, and feel free to suggest anything to make it better

That looks pretty cool! I like how two claws sorta "caress" the Apple. Haha. XD

That picture makes it look like the laser went so deep that it is letting light shine through from the backlight. Or is it just the lighting in the room?

Why do just a name?

In my opinion F resale value. at least thats not why I got my Macbook. I've been engraving for about a year and from my experience its a lot more fun doing something that can either be a conversation starter or something that expresses who you are (other than just your name). For example heres what i did with my Ipod and Macbook. The designs make it personalized without making it look so blase. Do art!
