That is insane, I'm glad i registered here to learn more about my Mac (new user!). Anyone got a clue to where I can find a reliable Laser Etching place in London? Somewhere around the Central Area would be awesome.

If I were to deface by beloved Macbook Pro by scratching a design into the cover it would have to be a damn good design and definitely wouldn't include my name with uneven lettering. It kind of brings down the "quality" feeling in a Mac. Macs have a very clean, modern feel to them and the finished design of the main poster's Macbook doesn't have that feel to me. I can see that some people like it but I am definitely not a fan. I'll stick to my clear blue protective casing, looks fine to me.

Is this your main business, or a side?
How much does a laser like that cost and what are the other hidden costs?

Looks like an interesting hobby/side job

It's a side project for me, but my wife does most of it.. I'm kinda the not-so-silent partner...

The potential market is amazing... it's just finding the work.. Very interesting work....

There really aren't many hidden costs... the price of the laser and supporting equipment - duct work, ventilation, etc... corel draw...

Lasers come in different sizes of "beds" The "standard" size is 12x24 inches... ours is 24x36.... I think there's a smaller size or two...

Prices probably start at $8,000 and go up.... you pay for bed size and power....

i've seen some really nice, minimalist etchings on laptops, but none of them are on this thread, which seems to be filled with all kinds of ugly and the kind of of graphics you'd see on a 1998 mazda with blacked out windows and a f*cked muffler.

Looks good and unique. It is custom made thing, not some faceless Apple MBP -YAM (yet another mac). As far as reselling, not everybody has a notion to resell stuff.

so i got excited when i saw this and I drew up my own design, i still need to find someone to engrave it, but let me know what you think, and feel free to suggest anything to make it better

I would go for something that looked less like a swastika.

Really? A Swastika?... well than. So why don't you suggest something different?

I would, but unfortunately I have no artistic ability. Plus, it's kind of like getting at tattoo. You need to get something you think is cool.

BTW, I was mostly joking with my previous comment, but there was a little similarity, don't you think?

I think it looks like the Buddhist symbol; one that symbolizes peace and harmony. It's awesome, thought I don't see how you would get the black in there.

Well I guess it wouldn't be black, maybe in the right reflection in would look black, but it would look like the other designs, I just thought making it black would help with the laser engraving process.. i still haven't found a place to do it though

Most jewelry shops can do the laser etching, but maybe not on something as big as the MBP

Unfortunately the only way to find a place to do this is to call around and check. Although I think somebody should start a thread detailing all the places that have a laser etcher capable of engraving an MBP (hint hint, wink wink, nudge nudge) :p That is if this hasn't already been done (too lazy to do a search haha)

Dude that looks AWESOME! Congratulations!

I was wondering about getting a pattern etched into mine after the warranty expires (yeah... I looked it up, this voids your warranty people - at least in Britain) ... something heavily Celtic or something so that it looks awesome.

Now I know I want one... damnit all I need now is a MacBook Pro! C'mon July, be now damnit!

Yeah ive contacted several apple people and they have all said it won't void my warranty. Ive also read about other people asking and they also have said it won't void it.

But being in Britain, i have no clue :D

Im going there this summer and i have two questions, i was in London for spring break and i wanted to know where the main apple store was in London, i think its on Regent Street? Does anybody know a good way to get there, i mainly took the underground while i was there.

And number two, im bring my MBP with me this summer, so i know i will need a plug in adapter and from what ive read i need a power conversion thing so i don't fry my charger???

Near enough all of Apple's Power blocks have university power supply, they allow input from 100V~240V, this means you can travel to just about any region on earth and still be fine.

However, you'll need a 2pin to 3 Pin converter! Don't bother buying one from Apple, they're expensive. You can pick up a shaver adapter in the UK for next to nowt and it'll work fine.

I got my machine from UK and their voltages is 240v..
now I'm in Japan and it's all 100volts here.. and it's working just fine.
