Im sure Verizon will start doing the same, dont think they will not care.
And I'd rather not deal with Verizons slowwwww 3G speeds and without data and voice at the same time.

Wow, what did they all pull around 56 kilobytes per second?:D

All that matter is ATT is going after tethering users CURRENTLY AND VZW is NOT currently !:D

I'd have to agree. Verizon is rock solid coverage and pretty good 3G speeds but since I love in SoCali Att coverage is amazing as well with the benefits of better speed, voice + data, and the ability to sell your phone more easily since most of the rest of the world is gsm makes Att better for me personally.

Since I had a Verizon 2200 mifi, I agree that AT&T's 3G is faster. The only thing great about my 2200 mifi is that I had way better 3G data coverage over AT&T's 3G. There were many times were I had to connect my iPhone/iPad to my Verizon mifi because I couldn't get AT&T 3G. I upgraded my 2200 to the 4G LTE mifi, and if I have a good LTE signal... I get +-10 Mbps. Now that I think of it... when it switches to 3G, it seems faster than my 2200 mifi. I really like Verizon data coverage... but AT&T phone coverage is better in the area where I live.

Hey the word "currently" is correct:D
Lets see how long that lasts.

Damn, that sucks.
So much for PdaNet's hide usage Level 2 feature.

Call them up and tell them again you're not tethering. I was told the email, that text and a letter through the mail are all part of one message. As long as you call up and tell them you're not they wont automatically switch you unless they continue to detect tethering after you said you're not.

I was also told on the phone today that certain applications trigger tethering including Slingbox. According to the AT&T rep, if you stream your slingbox at home to your phone somewhere else, that's tethering because you're transferring data between a 3rd party device. I asked her "well couldn't you then say that about anything?" she sighed like she didn't really want to argue about it.

Sounds like another misinformed AT&T rep talking out her rear end.:D
Why would using the sling app trigger tethering and how can they consider that tethering? That's nonsense.

Probably, but she read it off her list of uses that trigger tethering. I'm sure she didn't write that list.

Unless you want to think she wasn't actually reading off a list and just pulling random apps out of her ass.

"Uhhh... Angry Birds causes tethering!"

Interesting.
So their method of detecting tethering could have lots of flaws then if trully she was reading off an official company document.
Lots of people use the sling app, they should automaticly get charged for internet tethering where in reality it has nothing to do with it?

Ya, F them, I use sling all the time. That is not tethering, I also use pandora and netflix, those are all the same. I bought the phone for those apps, if they try and mess with that, they are done.

Dont believe a word they say, tell them that you will only agree when you see it in writing with your signature on it. A contract must have the signatures of both parties in "BLUE INK". So they better not mess with us.

They are just thugs trying the old protection racket, call them on it, and say, Fine show me in writing with my signature where I agreed to that.

I know someone asked this earlier but I didn't see it answered. Is there a difference between tetherme and mywif as far as whether or not AT&T can detect your usage? The only time I ever need to tether is when I'm traveling (which, unfortunately, is very rarely:() but I'd like to know that I can use tetherme for those times without worrying about losing my unlimited plan. I certainly wouldn't abuse it either.

I don't really want to "upgrade" to a tethering plan for something that I literally may only use for a few days out of the entire year.

you gotta be kidding me? Anytime you upgrade or take out a contract with a mobile provider you agree to their terms and yes that includes unauthorized tethering.

I wouldnt go as far as to say that I was told using Slingbox would REQUIRE a tethering plan, just that it "triggers" an account as using tethering when it detects the usage.

VZW is sounding really good right now,
I'd be curious why you feel this way.

The grass is always greener till you move in.

But what would l know? I'm already a Verizon customer :)

Someone is about to learn blue ink on paper is not a requirement to evoke a binding cellular contract.

That's the old school way, no longer relevant.

You can't beat the carriers at their game, they're smarter than "thugs" :)

Hey muckymuck -- may be time for you to grow UP and grow a a PAIR.

This entire thread is just ridiculous. I'm on Verizon, but I for one am GLAD AT&T is busting your ass.

It's really simple - if you can't afford the $45, don't use it. Or cut something else out in your life, like the rest of us have to do. Take some personal responsibility.

double post from the pdanet thread but,

I got my white iphone 4 and setup mywi on 4/28, been tethering since that and att emailed me just now about tethering. what do i do?

info:
"so i just got off the phone with ATT because i got that email and they just denied that it was something wrong with their system and did not take my argument that i wasnt tethering (my lie)

basically they told me because i just got the white iphone 4 with ios 4.3.2 that the new ios (4.3.2) has a new security feature to detect internet tethering specifically.
is that true?
and would the pdanet feature hide this?
someone's gotta know right? "

anyone know whats up now?

You know, I like this theory the best. I've been tethering like crazy on 4.0, 4.2. But just a few days on 4.3.2, I get the warning from AT&T. Didn't save my blob for 4.2.1 so sucks to be me.

^ Well, trust me, that isn't it.

I've been on 4.1 JB only for months and I got the e-mail 3 weeks ago and my data usage never exceeded 5GB per month. So, a little or a lot of tethering doesn't matter, and neither does the software version, apparently.

I am not kidding, if they try and tell me that NOW slingplayer, or pandora, or netflix is tethering, they will let me out of my contract with no ETF. I am not talking about real tethering, I am talking about slingplayer, or pandora, or netflix on my iphone with apps I payed for ($29.00) and apple got its cut. That my friend is called "bait and switch"

I got and email on May 3 and that same text message today about tethering and I have never used tethering and my iphone 4 is not jailbroken and on saturday I used slingplayer for 1 hour and on tuesday I get and email saying that I have been tethering without a plan I believe that this slingplayer app causing tethering is true and if so ATT is just looking for an way possible to get rid of unlimited data plans.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

Maybe it's time I drop an email to the developers of the apps that AT&T is stating are part of tethering. Might be stopping some uninformed folks from buying those apps.

I got a tethering text today. I do occasionally tether so I was waiting for it. I just called AT&T and fessed up to it and told them I would not do it anymore. they were cool about it and said they would remove the flag from my account and just told me not to do it again in the future.

This is a great example of what happens when one is honest and decent to them.

I've had nothing but great service from each of the carriers I use.

I don't work for free and I don't expect anything for free.

Some people simply can't understand that simple concept.

Actually sling is not the same as Pandora or Netflix. But hey your not kidding:cool:

I don't expect anything for free either and that's why I pay ATT nearly 80 dollars a month. I can understand sending this for heavy users but the occasional tether should not be an issue. Is there any difference between me going to MR on my iphone or the laptop that is tethered. Seriously, IS THERE? They are being dicks, plain and simple.

Do you know what is dishonest? ATT not allowing me to add a tethering plan unless I drop my unlimited data. Or the fact that my old iPhone works perfectly fine without a data pkg. as a normal phone but att requires one to use it. If they force me to sign up for a tether plan and nix my unlimited over a couple hundred mb, I will be gone. And they can keep the 3000 rollover minutes.

I don't tether, mainly because I don't have a reason to, but it's complete bs that you can't do it, especially for people on tiered plans. It's not stealing at all. Data has been paid for. Anyway, the good news is that the devs in the jailbreak community will more than likely find a way to hide the teathering from AT&T, as all the teathering apps make them good money, and that will stop if At&t is able to tell.
