OP have you not been in this forum for the last month? This one is totally on you. There's really nothing you can do at this point except stop or accept the change.

I got the threat email, text, letter round in March. I tether very little (my entire data usage is rarely over 3GB per months and most of it not due to tethering), but my partner tethers all the time because she has no wifi. In March her data usage was over 8GB. So we both dialed our tethering way down for a couple weeks. The "deadline" came and went, neither data plan was changed. Our total data use on the April bill was less than 3GB for both phones.

Then May 3rd, I got the nastygram email again, with the text following the next day. Our data usage is a bit higher, will probably total 5GB between the two of us this month. If they switch the plans on May 13th, I'll call them. Otherwise I have to wonder if it isn't just a ploy to get people to call and switch plans for fear of ATT doing it.

Since everyone is getting these notices on the same days, tethering or not, seems like ATT is blowing smoke again hoping people will panic.

double post from the pdanet thread but,

I got my white iphone 4 and setup mywi on 4/28, been tethering since that and att emailed me just now about tethering. what do i do?

info:
"so i just got off the phone with ATT because i got that email and they just denied that it was something wrong with their system and did not take my argument that i wasnt tethering (my lie)

basically they told me because i just got the white iphone 4 with ios 4.3.2 that the new ios (4.3.2) has a new security feature to detect internet tethering specifically.
is that true?
and would the pdanet feature hide this?
someone's gotta know right? "

anyone know whats up now?

What is up is AT&T wants you to pay for the BANDWIDTH you are using!

So do I! People who use large chunks for data slow the network down for everyone else. Find yourself a WiFi and use it.

does tetherme do something different than mywi?
do you have 4.3.2? or the white iphone 4? cuz the lady claimed now there is "new security features" with in 4.3.2 or the white iphone 4 that allows them to "detect" mywi.

pony up...? do you want to pony up and paypal me $45 every month?

how do we even know the TTL works with this newly claimed "4.3.2 new security feature"?

TetherMe enables the built-in personal hotspot in iOS that you'd normal have to pay for. I use a black iPhone on AT&T running 4.3.2.

So tetherme is undetectable since it's native???

AT&T isn't detecting that you're using an app, they're detecting that packets that did not originate from your iPhone are coming over your iPhone's data connection. If you're not paying for tethering using MyWi or TetherMe looks no different to AT&T, they just see the odd packets and excessive traffic.

:(:(:(

Can't wait till the community figures out a way to circumvent Att tethering detection...

Same here Applejuiced :)

Only thing I'm still worried about is the fact that people are getting flagged for using Netflix and Slingbox on their iPhones :(

Yes, me too.
If I get a message without even tethering I'd be heated.
They need to figure something out and if they accuse people then tell them at a particular date and time you used that much data by tethering or something like that.
Not their word against yours with no proof and from what we can see so far their way of detecting it has many flaws. Lots of people that are not JB got notices too.

Section 6.2 of ATT wireless user agreement:

attempt to penetrate, security measures of AT&T's wireless network or another entity's network or systems; (vii) software or other devices that maintain continuous active Internet connections when a computer's connection would otherwise be idle or any "keep alive" functions, unless they adhere to AT&T's data retry requirements, which may be changed from time to time. This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services, redirecting television signals for viewing on Personal Computers, web broadcasting, and/or for the operation of servers, telemetry devices and/or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition devices is prohibited. Furthermore, plans (unless specifically designated for tethering usage) cannot be used for any applications that tether the device (through use of, including without limitation, connection kits, other phone/smartphone to computer accessories, BLUETOOTH® or any other wireless technology) to Personal Computers (including without limitation, laptops), or other equipment for any purpose. Accordingly, AT&T reserves the right to (i) deny, disconnect, modify and/or terminate Service, without notice, to anyone it believes is using the Service in any manner prohibited or whose usage adversely impacts its wireless network or service levels or hinders access to its wireless network, including without limitation, after a significant period of inactivity or after sessions of excessive usage and (ii) otherwise protect its wireless network from harm, compromised capacity or degradation in performance, which may impact legitimate data flows. You may not send solicitations to AT&T's wireless subscribers without their consent. You may not use the Services other than as intended by AT&T and applicable law. Plans are for individual, non-commercial use only and are not for resale. AT&T may, but is not required to, monitor your compliance, or the compliance of other subscribers, with AT&T's terms, conditions, or policies.

Just suck it up and pay for it.

useless post, why quote terms of a contract. they don't mean **** in court. The judge/jury can still throw all of it out no matter what the paper you signed may say.

Are you kidding? I hope you're kidding. Maybe, while you're studying up on the law you can review something called contract law. macking104's post at least cited something real and relevant. You went another route; armchair lawyer, and a poor one at that.

New device with new security built in to detect unauthorized tethering or not, AT&T is cracking down (as is VZW) and will likely no longer tolerate our shenanigans.

That contract quoted above is useless, it says anyone "they believe is tethering" they dont even have to prove it, BS. That wont hold up in anything let alone court.

I dont tether but I netlix, and Pandora, and Sling. All purchased in the app store.

Thats what got me hot that some people said they got flagged for sling use. If they are lying and are tethering thats a different story.

And by the way Old time contract rules still apply, but only if YOU think they do, and stand on your rights.!

But you are also correct, if you dont stand on them they dont apply, so for you you are correct.

Honestly I don't think VZW will bother 3G customers who tether. Besides already paying for an "unlimited" data plan, I think VZW will focus all of those efforts to the LTE smartphones.

You are out of your mind :p

Same flawed argument could be said for Att (we pay for unlimited, they will focus on 4g phones instead) and yet here we are...

Verizon will be locking down everyone who tethers in the next few months - Guaranteed.

AT&T makes it real simple, you don't have to do anything.
If you get that tethering text, AT&T adds tethering to your plan.
If you want to keep tethering, pay like everyone else.
Or, call and tell them it was a mistake and stop tethering.

I hope you didn't pay MiWI anything, that is your real issue.

unjailbreak your phone, walk into AT&T and demand that they show you how you could have possibly tethered. Then demand $500 for wasting your time.

DO IT!

that's not smart...because they will show you the "tethered data" and change your plan for you on the spot...The party is winding down...free tethering is coming to and end...it's the carrier settings that allow them to discover if ypu're cheating them out of data

BTW Just to infuriate those "Do gooder ideal good patrons" I just got back from a two bus rides where 8 laptops, 3 iPads and 15 iPod touches all tethered to my droid for internet ripping through a whopping 2Gigabytes. It was beautiful.

Lmao sounds like some bs.
