Agreed. Whilst the smart cover is good, I definately preferred the old style one on my iPad 3.

Same here, longing for a leather smart cover for the Air. Never had problems with the metal hinge as a small piece of scotch tape where the hinge touches the iPad prevents any scratches. Just sold my 4 and after removing the tape and screen protector it was almost like new condition.

I returned the smart case today, and replaced it with the smart cover. The cover is fine, through I wish it was leather. I prefer the way it attaches compared to the iPad 2/3/4 covers in that it is not metal on metal, which eventually leaves a blemish.

The cover is 3.6 oz or about 0.23 lbs.

Now I'll consider protecting the back with a thin shell from Speck, Luvvitt, or other when available.

I just got back from the Apple store to get a replacement due to a defective screen. I had my Black Smart Case on while the Genius was checking out my issue. My iPad kept falling on him and he was a bit taken back by the fact that the case wasn't holding the iPad up. While he was noting the defects on my screen, he told me that he would also be swapping my case out. He mentioned that he had not spent much time with the Smart Case but said that the one that he cherry picked out for me was "a little better".

It will be returned once one of my back covers get delivered (I am trying the i-BLASON and the Dolce out)

Luvvitt Dolce: (The clear one is sold out now it looks like... ) http://amzn.to/1cDm08R

I bought the case and will probably return it as it adds 50% to the weight. I weighed it :)

well mine without the case weights 469 grams and with the case 615 grams so the weight of the cover is 146 grams... 146/469 = 0.3113 or 31.13%

I don't own a smart cover but I read here on the forum that it weights 102 grams which is 21.75% of the weight

for a full body protection I think it is pretty light.

So far I'm ok with the smart case. Its comfortable to hold. The sides near the hinge stick up a bit but I find with these type of cases it will break in and sit flat after awhile. I'm still going to keep on the look out for a better case over the next few days.

I personally prefer the naked iPad when I'm just sitting at home on the couch, but the iPad Air Smart Case looks reasonably durable and professional for when I take the iPad to work, and more "natural" than a plastic molded case with a pleather flap. I have both the brown and the black smart case and I'm pretty satisfied.

Like the Dos XX beer commercial... I don't always use a case, but when I do, I prefer the Apple Smart Case.

Love mine. It's perfect. Fits perfect and isn't that heavy. To each their own. That is what makes things interesting.

Same here. I'm thrilled with my Smart Cover. I sprayed it with a waterproof leather spray made for shoes, which really brought out the nice textures of the leather. The same spray makes water bead up on the shoes I've used it on, so it should keep the Smart Cover looking nice longer. The feel of the leather in my hands is wonderful. I previously had a polyurethane smart cover and plastic back cover, and those never felt very nice to the touch. The case is very snug and fits every hole and port perfectly. I'm very happy with it.

Also, I really like the tripartite fold. Since the iPad Air is so light, I can actually hold it in one hand, and the cover folded into thirds at the back makes a great handle. It gives a nice secure feel to holding the iPad.

Never had an issue with it and it never marked the iPad at all in 18 months of use. I removed and re-attached it quite frequently too.

Same here. I'm not sure why others have issues with that. I've not had any problems.

What I didn't like about the Smart Cover was the ease with which it could detach. If you lost your grip and held onto only the cover, the iPad would detach and fall. For this reason, I always detached the Smart Cover before handing my iPad to anyone (so that they could look at an album of photos or whatever).

I much prefer the Smart Case for the iPad Air. That cover is not coming off unless you really want it off. Plus it gives a little extra lip around the edges to hold onto, which is nice now that the side bezels are so narrow.

Love the black smart case on my iPad Air. Very thin for what it is. Also like how the cover snaps to the back when it's open. Could sit a bit higher in typing mode but can't really complain too much about that. It's a solid case.

here's a detailed review on the apple case. I hadn't planned on buying it, but after seeing the review there's NO way I'm buying it

His review seemed overall pretty positive. I will be getting it since all of the problems noted aren't ones that I'd really ever notice. I don't use it propped up, I don't grip it like he did - I just want a good compliment to my 5s and protection for the $500 I just put down for this new iPad.

Taking my Smart Case back. Did not like the edges and added bulk to the ipad. Just picked up smart case with Belkin snap case for back. MUCH BETTER!!!

I bit the bullet and bought a smart case. It fits great and it looks great. It adds to the weight, but not nearly as much as most other cases.

Ordered my smart case and ipad air on Friday. Got my Air but my smart case was on back order. Well, it came in today and here are my thoughts

THE GOOD
1) Nice feel. Feels much better than the polyurathane case.
2) Thin. Doesn't add much weight.
3) nice coloring. Got the Red case. It's not candy apple red. It's kind of subdued.
4) Easy open. Not like the previous case.
5) Back flap doesn't flap. If you catch it right the flap will latch to the back.

THE BAD
1) The gap. Not happy about the gap that a previous poster mentioned.
2) 3 panels. I can't keep the folds connected.
3) No lip. There is no lip like the previous case and it seems like the edge of the case where I'm holding it would get worn out over time.

I'm not sure if I'll keep the case. For $79 it shouldn't have the gap at the very least. (I could probably even live with the 3 panel fold!)

I'm going to use it until Friday and see if it grows on me. If not I'll head back to the apple store and return it.

I am pretty thrilled with mine. I do have a slight gap at the "hinge" area, but that will sit down soon enough. I noticed some reviews say that standing it up, by pushing on the top it would easily collapse, toppling over. This is not the case with mine, it will not collapse no matter how hard I push.

My only complaint would be that propping it up horizontally, the angle is quite low, I wish it was propped up just a bit more.

After having the case for almost a week now, I love it. It's not as bulky as my 4th gen leather case was, and it doesn't give me too much grief with the 3 fold panel. I'm definitely keeping it and maybe get a keyboard case in the future for school

I agree. After a week I'm quite satisfied with the Apple Smart Case. I have it in both black and brown and at least for now I don't feel like I need to keep shopping for a case.

Looks like I'm in the minority here then. Love my Apple smart case. Great texture, feel, color, and very minimalistic.

I was right in thinking that this second iteration would be better designed than the first version, which I serioulsy did not like and returned. This new case is awesome though. I love how it matches my iPhone in exactly the same colored Apple leather case (both in yellow). Couldn't be happier! :D

Our review agrees with you. Personally I like the new Smart Case. It won't satisfy everyone, especially not at that price. You'd be hard pressed to find a better genuine leather case that'll match the fit and slimness of Apple's Smart Case, at least not right now.

I personally like iPad nekkid, however I realize the important of case to protect the iPad.

Had been on the hunt for iPad cases for the longest since I can remember. I tried those cheap china made PU. Medium price Yoobao genuine cowleather, higher price KAVAJ Genuine Leather case, Speck Genuine Leather Magfolio Case. And my latest Stint, TUMI Leather iPad case.

I really love the new iPad Air Smart case for several reason.
> Really light - @4.5 oz, it hands down beats the rest of the cases.
> No plastic backing (I hate hard backing, be it full hard backing, or half hard backing, as it add weight, looks ugly, and feel ugly)
> It's all around leather on the outside.

The thing that I think could be improved.
> Overall Leather need to be made from better Quality.
> If possible, please thin the casing by 50%.
> Brown color need to be darker. I like darker brown leather, and the darkest brown case is too light for me.
> Pricing could be made cheaper. But considering the competition, I think $79 is an ok price for a good leather case.
