I got about an hours sleep last night, then I woke up & couldn’t get back to sleep.

So I had a hot chocolate.

I managed to get back to sleep, and my sleep pattern for the night was nowhere near as erratic as it usually is.

Hey there! Did you have a cup of hot chocolate in the middle of the night? Is your room chilly? That’s why you’re staying up so late or couldn’t get back to sleep. If it’s freezing in your house, you can keep your room warm by using a space heater. Just make sure it’s not too loud or safe to run it overnight. If you prefer to preheat your room, do it 2 hours before you go to bed and keep the door cracked open or shut to trap the heat. Shut the heater off once it’s time to drift off to sleep. 😴 To stay warm, wear extra clothes like a tank top under a long-sleeved shirt, a cozy hoodie or sweatshirt, or thermal base layers. Add another blanket on top of your blanket to make it extra comfortable and warm, or use a winter duvet cover. Does your new bedding have one?

Heating is optional since spring is coming, and this winter wasn’t as cold as last year in my area. So, I don’t usually use a space heater overnight, especially since it can blow out the breaker if there are a lot of things plugged in. But yesterday, I had to finish the last paragraph of my midterm essay and catch up on some things. I ended up sleeping at midnight!

I wasn’t cold at all, but my nan always told me that hot chocolate helps you sleep.

I cleaned my teeth afterwards, and got some sleep.

Got it, bro! 😎 Can you sip on that hot chocolate after dinner as you start winding down with your iPad? Avoid doing it in the middle of the night, especially since you’ll have to brush your teeth again afterward. After drinking that hot chocolate and catching up on the forums and reading emails, clean your teeth and wash your face. Then, power down your iPad Pro, fluff your pillows on your bed, and get some sleep. You can listen to white noise (ambient sounds from the iPhone control center) or a sleep meditation from Fitness+ while you’re asleep. If you’ve finished every single sleep meditation on Fitness+, you can listen to a sound meditation or repeat one of these sessions. Once you’ve drifted off and you happen to wake up in the middle of the night, put the AirPods back in the case, sip some water from your bottle, and go back to sleep until the alarm goes off. Do you drink tea too? You can get a little warm before bed while winding down by sipping decaf tea. Jasmine tea is my favorite.

No problem.😌

On hotter days, I usually drink a cup or can of pop 🥤 when I’m at my laptop catching up on emails and other tasks, and about to wind down. If I don’t have a cup of pop 🥤, I drink a bottle of water instead. Once spring and summer arrive, and we put away the heaters, I switch to thinner throw blankets and get comfortable basketball shorts or pyjamas that aren’t too thick or long. You can also turn on the air conditioner or open the windows before going to bed during the warmer spring and summer months when nights aren’t as chilly anymore.

I keep this  bottle on my bedside table when I’m in my room to grab some water when I’m in bed or on my desk. I also bring it to the home gym because it’s a thermal S’well bottle that keeps it ice cold for up to a day. I track my water intake on Plant Nanny, a water tracking app that’s also a game. You keep a virtual garden of plants, and you don’t need the paid subscription. The more levels you get by completing challenges in the game, the more exclusive plants 🪴 and pots you unlock. You can also integrate it with HealthKit and see your intake on your Apple Watch with Watch face complications and on the Dynamic Island on your iPhone.

I recall you asking about the complication that resembled a sunset chart and routine chart on my Apple Watch. I mentioned the Peaks app, which helps you develop better habits for your body and daily routine, and makes informed decisions about your health. It utilizes sleep tracking data from your Apple Watch. Have you had a chance to look at it? It will also help you understand your sleep quality and energy levels, especially for those who require structured times throughout their 24-hour day. Check it out here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/peaks-day-planner/id6446705377 These apps are created by highly talented indie developers who are passionate and young. You can get the subscription for free by providing feedback and meeting with the developers through Zoom. It will also indicate the optimal time to get some morning sun, appropriate meal times, and screen or coffee cutoff times. ☕️

These past few years, I've been really enjoying a regular postprandial lavender-chamomile; excellent closure to my day.
Great idea! I usually use bulk tea leaves from the grocery store. Many Asian grocery stores sell tins of bulk tea leaves that last longer than tea bags. You’ll need a steeper or tea jug with an infuser. Heat the water in the microwave for a minute, then remove it from there and add the tea leaves to the infuser. Dip the infuser in the hot water and steep the tea for 10-15 minutes, depending on your preference for strength and consistency, as well as the temperature and size of the container. I use about half a teaspoon of tea leaves.

There are also oolong, green tea, and chai tea options. ☕️ Once it’s all steeped pour it into a mug or if it’s a hot day in a cup of ice. 🧊

I've recently started using a travel water bottle like this one to make tea. I just dump tea leaves into the bottle, pour hot water, and close the lid. I use a strainer to catch any loose leaves when pouring it into a cup. This works especially well with herb tea, you get much stronger flavor than steeping tea in a mug or pot, because the water stays hot longer.

For years now, I've been making a pot of tea before bed and keeping it in the bedroom so I have something to drink if I get thirsty during the night. I now switch between the pot and water bottle depending on what type of tea I'm making -- water bottle for herb tea, and pot for black tea. But I always keep tea in the bedroom at night.

I suggested it to @The Cockney Rebel as another great strategy. He loves a warm drink like hot chocolate ☕️ when he unwinds in the evening, especially in the end of winter ❄️. Thanks for adding that to the conversation about this. I heard of these types of tea steeper tumbler bottles in TJX too, and they’re great for colder drinks. What are your favorite tea varieties? ❤️ I’ve tried jasmine, oolong, lavender green tea, and rose tea.

This is "not erratic"? Wow! As someone who is also an insomniac, I feel for you! Unfortunately, the way I fix me is probably not a way you can fix you. And it appears you've already run the gamut of sleep aids.

I was on Ambien for years but stopped a few years ago. Mostly because I couldn't find a doctor to prescribe it anymore. I do take it occasionally when I'm on vacation but it's not nearly as effective as it used to be for me. Also, Lorazepam helps a little but that's not really a sleep aid. Forget melatonin... I think that actually keeps me awake. White noise helps... sometimes I listen to Youtube videos that have a soft voice. Definitely need to be calm, quiet, low light.

This is what it usually looks like for me.

I take zopiclone, promethazine, and lorazepam.

Stopped taking the venlafaxine, Mirtazapine and Olanzapine, about a couple of months ago. Couldn’t take the weight gain.

That’s two antidepressants, and an antipsychotic.

Haven’t told “the professionals” as they’d probably have me sectioned, again.

It’s a lose-lose situation.

Oh, I've always loved tea, and I drink a lot of different types. When I lived in Japan, I drank lots of Japanese green tea, but here in NY, the water doesn't suit green tea quite as well, and also, I'm spoiled because I was able to get certain kinds of green tea in Japan that's not available or very expensive here. So I don't drink much green tea now.

I like jasmine, it's one of the teas I drink regularly. I also like Earl Grey. I keep several basic black teas like Assam, Ceylon and Darjeeling around, and blend or drink straight as the mood strikes me.

I also keep peppermint and chamomile, which I also blend or drink straight, or sometimes mix with the black tea.

I get my tea from this store in Soho. They have walls of tea. All kinds of blends. I mostly stick to basic teas and mix my own, but there are some of their blended teas I like.

I have an electric-kettle-heater, and I can always heat water effortlessly.

Chamomile is a totally-fantastic addition to one's Life (and an awesome colonic), but the addition of jasmine makes the enjoyment extremely palatable :)

I heard of these electric kettles before. It’s also perfect for brewing tea or pour over coffee ☕️ when you’re on the go like a hotel that does not offer good coffee, camping or anything else.

Amazing! It’s also a great way to mix teas; I should definitely try it sometime. Have you tried Starbucks Teavana before? I haven’t bought it as much as the tea leaves from the Asian market are cheaper for oolong tea and other varieties, but Teavana’s triangle tea bags are really good quality. I also like the peppermint flavor tea. Yes, tea directly imported from Japan can be expensive. Shohei Ohtani was featured in Oy Ocha green tea for the Dodgers, but I saw bottles of that imported green tea from Japan 🇯🇵 are incredibly expensive. They cost $8 for a big bottle.
Y’all let’s back this thread into action…

Hey there! I read about section 2, and it says that they can section you out for up to a month (28 days) to assess your mental health. If you’re comfortable sharing, how long do you think they’ll keep you sectioned out on average ? Also, do you track the prescriptions you take for your mental illness on the medications app on your Apple Watch?

Haven't tried the Teavana brand specifically, but I've had teas in those triangle tea bags. They do taste better than regular tea bags, but I've found that the most cost efficient way to get tea is to just buy loose tea. Over the years I've built up quite a collection of tin tea cans, which I reuse to store the loose tea I buy by the bag.

Back to topic, I find that I do well with 5-6 hours of sleep. I think this idea of everyone needing 8 hours of sleep per night may be over exaggerated, and may cause some needless stress. Same thing with needing to sleep straight through the night. There's some evidence that before the industrial revolution, people used to sleep in two segments, waking up in the middle of the night for an hour or so. So find a pattern that works for you.

That’s why I’ve been using loose-leaf tea for years since COVID. These tins last forever! I only had to replace the jasmine tea one because I used that one the most. But I mix both tea leaves and tea bags because I collect tea bags from hotels too 😂.

I need at least 6 hours of sleep to function properly. I was behind on it last year, especially during the summer as I had summer school online. You can read about it here:
Post in thread ‘I have insomnia. How would sleep tracking help me? [MERGED]’

I usually don’t get 8 hours of sleep, but 7 hours is enough for me. Speaking of that, folks in the USA ready to spring forward? I heard that daylight savings time messes with people who have to wake up early for school or work. We lose an hour of sleep because of this. Some states have already made laws that say schools that start early, like secondary schools and other public colleges, can’t start classes before 8 am. California has that law since late 2022. But the schools can still open their campuses early for students to beat the traffic, use the library, go to campus events or grab breakfast, but classes can’t start earlier than 8 am. That way, students have more time to get ready or get enough sleep. The earliest time my school can start for most morning classes is 8 am. Some start around 9 am. 🌅

I started doing sleep tracking in those days when I had no idea of how much sleep I was actually getting after seemingly tossing and turning all night. In the days before Apple Watches started tracking sleep I bought an Oura ring to take on that task (it's good but pricey - but in my mind worth it).

Turned out I was getting more sleep than I had thought. Then I started using that information to schedule daytime naps. Over time, somehow, sleep time started getting better and better. I think some of it was psychological, being more calm and less stressed once I realized my sleep wasn't so bad after all.

My problem with Apple Watch sleep tracking is that it stops tracking when it thinks you've finished your night's sleep, even in those times when you wake early, read a while, then go back to sleep. It doesn't record that second phase nor does it record any naps you might take during the day.

For a year I noticed I was waking up with migraines and falling asleep midday. I’ve been tracking my sleep for years but no paid any mind to the wake intervals in the health app. During those times I would stop breathing in my sleep. I took a sleep study in 2023 and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I’ve been using a CPAP machine and still struggle with sleep from time to time, and have to resort to drinking coffee before bedtime in order to fall asleep. I also suffer from depression, anxiety and I’m bipolar, so I’m on medication for that. I have trouble sleeping and the medication is supposed to help with that but hasn’t been that successful in over a year.
