For a year I noticed I was waking up with migraines and falling asleep midday. I’ve been tracking my sleep for years but no paid any mind to the wake intervals in the health app. During those times I would stop breathing in my sleep. I took a sleep study in 2023 and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I’ve been using a CPAP machine and still struggle with sleep from time to time, and have to resort to drinking coffee before bedtime in order to fall asleep. I also suffer from depression, anxiety and I’m bipolar, so I’m on medication for that. I have trouble sleeping and the medication is supposed to help with that but hasn’t been that successful in over a year.
I have EUPD & OCD.

Also tinnitus.

I stopped taking my antidepressants and antipsychotic a while back, and my sleeping has become worse.

I am now severely depressed, and anxious.

The medication messes with your mind, so I have to give my brain time to heal itself.

I was on the medication for years. It works for me, but puts on lots of weight and bloating.

I’ve come off of the medication before, but haven’t lasted this long.

I just have to ride it out.

I managed to lose weight on mine, but I’ve easily gained 10 pounds of it back and am working on losing it and some more. I have some medical issues going on so my depression has worsened over the last 2 months and made my sleep deteriorated a bit more.

Guys, did you experience any side effects from these medications? I heard on TV ads that antidepressants cause sleep changes.

Also, I got shy today. I had family issues yesterday. During a family outing, I was once filled with joy, soaking up the sun and browsing tech accessories. After that, went to grab some food from a store. But I got distracted, grabbed a soda, and some other items. My dad thought I was depressed because I forgot to greet the cashier. I kept fumbling with my rewards card trying to find it on my iPhone and slurred my words.

This led to another argument and yelling as I tried to distance myself. I knew I was next.

I requested counseling from my school’s mental health department thru their referral system. I hope they call me soon to discuss my case.

The Fitness+ Calm meditation videos are helpful, but I’ve had challenging times too. We’re in this together.

I hope you get some help, if needed.

I don’t have Fitness+, so can’t access the guided meditations.

Morning, bro. 🌅

I forgot you don’t use Fitness+ on your Apple Watch, iPad, and iPhone. In the USA, they offer a lot of free trials on Fitness+ and Apple Music, so I’ve been using it since I got my Apple Watch Series 6.

It’s a game-changer for my physical and mental health, and I love assigning workouts using Stacks on busy days.

It was a tough weekend! I couldn’t sleep last night. I went to bed around midnight yesterday after catching up on emails and shutting door to maintain my privacy while I am working on my laptop and waiting to charge my watch. My watch didn’t start tracking my sleep until 1:30 am!

It’s daylight savings time, but now it’s back to the amount of time I slept when I slept when I had two summer school classes online and finals!

How are things going, my friend? @The Cockney Rebel Have you tried drinking tea or moving your hot chocolate time before going to bed, also winding down with your iPad Pro?

I didn’t track my sleep last night, as I have washed my hands too much and they started bleeding.

I put hand cream on for the night.

They’re better now.

What is your favourite colour, from the new straps?

Oh my goodness, didn’t the heating get a bit too high? I don’t run it overnight anymore and only turn it on for the first two hours when I wake up in the morning. If it is so hot that it makes my hands dry out! And it’s the same thing when wildfires and wind hit over the course of January. I’ve gone through all my bottles of Aquaphor already, and I just threw out the last one that just got empty last weekend. I tried to get some more bottles at the school health office, but they only had small packets of these ointments. A lot of people took it because of the dry wildfire season. But I still stick to alternatives like Lubriderm lotion and my favorite Neutrogena sunscreen lotion for going out. They do cost a lot of money, but they work wonders! At least I still get them free from the school.

I also put on my special overnight lotion when I start to wind down. It has a lovely scent of lavender and chamomile, and it’s made with Shea butter. I just got a bottle of witch hazel and tea tree facial cleansing toner that I use every morning and evening when I wash up my face after I brush my teeth.

You couldn’t wear your Apple Watch because your hands were so dry? My favorite color of the new Apple Watch straps for Spring 2025 are peony, Northern Lights, periwinkle, and tangerine. But for a gold stainless steel Apple Watch, I have to try them on first! The pink one might match, though.

Oh, and I forgot to tell you about my mental health issues and intellectual disability. I have Asperger’s syndrome and a speech disorder. I don’t take any medication, but I do talking therapy with a counsellor when I fill out a referral form.

I haven't tracked my sleep in a while but I'll probably start again soon.

Two things that make me not want to do it: 1) Probably common with others is that I don't like having things "attached" to me when I'm trying to sleep. If I'm tired enough it doesn't matter though. 2) I started getting alerts from the Heart Rate app occasionally when I sleep as my heart rate can go below 40 (39, 38). All my EKG have been fine and it's possible this is due to exercise but I'll need to set an appointment with a cardiologist soon to make sure. Anyway, these "alerts" are rather alarming and causing stress.

Hey there, buddy! 😊 Is the threshold for low heart rate notifications too high? You can lower it. By the way, when you set up or pair a new Apple Watch on your iPhone, it sets it based on your age from the health app profile. Go to the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, scroll down to the heart rate app, and select the lowest threshold, which is 40 BPM. You can shut it off if there isn’t anything below that. Usually, healthy young folks like me don’t need the threshold above that.

Here’s a screenshot for reference: 👇

Thank you buddy! I checked my settings and it is set to the default (40 BPM). I don't want to turn it off at this point as it may be useful info. I'll just have to not worry about it too much in the meantime. I am certainly not an elite athlete so I don't think that's it. It could be a medication interaction. I can try tracking sleep for a bit to see if I can find a correlation (it doesn't happen every night).

Give the vitals app a try. It will notify you if your heart rate is too high or too low during bedtime.

During my NASA internship trip, I worked 11 hours a day. On the first day, I received a notification that my heart rate was high and I was breathing too fast at night. I had to wake up early from 3:30 am and go to bed at 10:45 pm because I had to catch the bus very early in the morning to go to work. My shifts were from 8 am to 7:30 pm, with three breaks. My job was a mix of office work and hands-on work.

Business Travel can disrupt these vital signs, especially if you haven’t worked long hours for a long time or it’s your first time doing overtime.

Cool. I accidentally found this app on my Watch the other day and didn't know what to make of it. It says "Needs more information" because I haven't done any sleep tracking in a while. I'll definitely check this out once I have some data. Thanks again!

Yea it requires a minimum of a month of sleep tracking nights just like training load, both of these things work together to check how your body can exert energy. Start giving it a try tonight and get used to charging your Apple Watch 1 hour to half hour before bedtime.

What do you mean by "assigning workouts," and how do you do it?
Hey there! I noticed you haven’t tried Fitness+ yet. I encourage you to check it out.

On the Apple Fitness+ app available on iPhone and iPad, I create Stacks based on the day of the week and my schedule. I assign them just like I would add tasks on my calendar.

I know this might seem a bit OT, but I’d love to share the full explanation why I do it. You can find it in my post below: ⬇️

First and foremost, to save on your library, you need to check the description of the workout or meditation on the app by tapping on the name or the thumbnail. Then, to add it to a Stack, tap on the three dots on the top right corner and select Add to Stack. Alternatively you can Haptic Touch the thumbnail and do the same thing.

1741637745503.png

1741638086666.png

Next, the stack will appear as a list. To add it as a library, you must add at least two videos from the fitness + app. Continue following these steps above 👆🏻 until you’ve structured a complete routine of workouts, meditation, or both that you need to do for the day.

Once you’ve added the desired videos, view your stack by pressing the button with the squares in the top right corner of your screen or tapping on the View Current Stack in the screenshot above ⬆️.

Ensure you have the videos you want and can rearrange them to your liking. The total elapsed time will be determined on the bottom of your screen. If you accidentally attempted the same workout before (indicated by a white check mark) or if it’s too long for a specific day like a school day, you can mix and match the videos. If you’re ready to assign it for that day, tap on the three dots again and add it to your library. It will sync across your Apple devices under your Apple Account through iCloud. If you upgrade your iPhone or iPad, the stacks will transfer over via backup or directly from the old device.
1741638394485.png

Once you tap on the button in the top right corner, give it a label for the Stack you’ll assign for the specific date(s). I usually name it with the date and the day of the week or occasion, such as MLK Day, Memorial Day, or the last day or kickoff of summer break. Once you’ve done this, the Stack will be saved.

When the day arrives and it’s time to get ready for your home gym workout, 💪 tap on the Stack for the day from your Stacks library in Fitness+. Then, tap the “Let’s Go” green button! The videos will play in the order you’ve planned. In between each video, you can rate the workout for training load on your watch, take a water break, and shuffle around the equipment to prepare for the next one. Once you press the green button on your Apple Watch or the “Let’s Go” button on your iPhone, the next video will play. The workout will continue until you reach the “Done” button after the final one for the day. To assign workouts by week or month, do it at least a few weeks in advance.

FYI, make sure to wear your Apple Watch on your wrist at all times for Fitness+. If you don’t wear one, the non-Apple Watch option will only show the move ring for all users with iOS 16 or later on an iPhone. This is the only option if you do not have an Apple Watch, but it’s highly recommended to get one for the best experience and to track your metrics, rings, and steps. Also, ensure that all your devices have enough battery for the duration of your workout. For a 1-hour workout, your iPhone battery should be above 45% to complete the entire workout. If it’s below 30%, plug it in to a wall charger or use a MagSafe power bank with a built in stand. The same applies to your Apple Watch; if it’s under 30%, charge it first for a minimum of 15-30 minutes

Thanks for the detailed response!

I haven't tried Fitness+, mainly because I'm afraid I'd like it, but I don't want to pay for yet another subscription thing -- I'm really trying to keep that down to the minimum.

I do sometimes use the Nike Run Club app and listen to their guided runs while walking. ;p That's about the extent of workouts I do. And I do meditate, but I was taught Zen meditation, so outside distractions like listening to guided meditation wouldn't fit with that.

Hey there! I’ve got a little trick up my sleeve that might help you save some money on Fitness+.

When your free trial ends, I renew it with a fresh, unexpired code. I then extend it beyond the initial 3 months of the free trial I get when I buy my new Apple Watch. And guess what? I keep refilling it with trial codes from my carrier (if they have loyalty programmes), certain fitness apps and websites, the Target website, BBY website, and other popular big box retailers around the country.

Some codes don’t expire, while others like the Target or carrier ones do. If a code doesn’t work, you can reach out to AppleCare through the Apple Support app, and they’ll happily reissue a replacement code with an extra month on it.

Need more details? Just let me know! It’s the same thing with Apple Music and TV+ too.

Oh, and check out the series’s for themed workouts from popular Grammy Awards artists, holidays, and even more specific sports like runners. Time to Run is perfect for folks who go for a few miles or more, just like you!

I did think about doing the free codes thing, but just felt that I don't need the additional stress of managing that. And I do think the Time to Run and Time to Walk workouts are a great idea. I've read a few of the transcripts, and they are fun and informative.

Maybe someday, if I ever win the lottery. :D

You can get started with this by getting the first trial on the Fitness app. How long did you have the Apple Watch Series 8? If you bought it launch day you would only get a month as the 3 month trial built in for Apple Watch recent purchases can only be redeemed up to 3 months.

No, not doing it. Like I said, I don't want to bother with hunting down free codes. Or stressing over canceling before the free trial is up.

👌🏻. 👊 Now, let’s get back to the topic, man. How’s your sleep tracking experience been with your Apple Watch Series 8 so far? Have you collected any more comfortable running and sleep tracking straps?

Sleep tracking is good, especially since I updated to watchOS 11. Like I said, I usually get 5-6 hours of sleep a night. I sometimes wonder if there is any correlation between the amount of REM and deep sleep I get and how I feel the next day, but I haven't bothered to track that closely.

Right now, I have three straps at hand, a Nike Sports band, a regular solo loop, and a braided solo loop. They are all comfortable for wearing to bed, though I have to say the braided solo loop is the most comfortable and easiest to slip on and off my wrist. It did start getting loose, though, so I tried washing it last weekend. I haven't put it back on since I washed it -- figured I'll keep wearing the Nike Sports band for a bit, until it gets warmer. That's because the heart rate sensor has been less reliable during my walks, and with the Nike Sports band I can tighten it a hole for my walks, whereas with the braided loop, there's no way to adjust the tightness.

I don't like swapping bands frequently, because with my mobility issues, it's hard for me to swap bands. I usually end up having to get a friend to help. So I'll stay with the Nike band until the end of March or maybe even through April, then switch back to the braided loop to see if washing it made it shrink any.

No wonder you don’t change your watch straps daily. Especially if you have prosthetics, arthritis, lost a limb, or have difficulty gripping the watch while doing band changes, it can be challenging.

I once tried putting on a leather link with one hand, and it was surprisingly easy. These leather magnetic straps simply clasp on.

I primarily use the sleep tracking feature on my watch. I have a health app called Peaks that determines my energy level and maps a routine based on algorithms. It also calculates my sleep quality and provides vital signs and training load data through the native watchOS apps.

I have a lot of involuntary movements and lack fine muscle coordination. So yes, it's hard for me to hold the watch and put pressure on the strap release button at the right angle and with the proper amount of force.

I was curious about the leather link, but they didn't have it for the smaller size watches, and now it's in that superfine fabric instead of leather. :(

I tried the Peaks app, and while it's given me some good hints about how to arrange my schedule, after a while, it just showed the same info every day, so I stopped looking at it. Maybe if I paid for the premium features it'd be more useful, but it's not like my days vary much.
