What do you care whether Apple makes money or not? Competition is king and it's free. Someday iTunes match will be free as well.

Well given that I'm a stockholder as well as a user, yes I want them to make money.

oh and don't count on iTunes Match being free ever. It might be rolled into the paid accounts for iCloud Drive but somewhere we'll likely be paying.

Because, I like the idea of all my photos and videos being stored on the cloud for free (just in case anything ever happened to my physical hard-drive(s)).

Jesus this is hysterical. The reason you provided is "Because I like the idea of it?" Is this real life?

We never thought OSX which is more widely used than iTunes Match would be free either. AFAIK iTunes Match isn't a huge money maker but with trying to rope in ad free radio, it'll live for a little while longer.

I don't think my 200gb music collection should count against my hard drive storage Because, I like the idea of all my music being stored on cloud for free (just in case anything ever happened to my physical hard-drive(s)). :D

see how stupid it sounds. I don't think anything at all on my computer should count against my storage on my computer…. because i think apple should host all my **** for FREEEEEE, yeah thats right FOR FREE

These are corporations whose main job is make money for stockholders - a cost must be paid for.
And thus lies the root of all evil. Stockholders, that is.

It seems to me that the less attention a company (but especially Apple) pays to its stockholders, the more money it makes in the long run.

I'm not talking about the nickel and dime stockholder, I'm talking about mindless Wall Street types whose sole goal in life is to add another zero to the end of their portfolio valuation. These people are truly less than useless.

Back on topic, I have no problems with Apple's storage plan pricing coming out this fall I think it is more than fair. But if I were in charge I would raise it to 25GB free per device. The cloud is never going to be a big money maker for Apple, and data centers are relatively cheap when you look at the good will with customers that move would generate.

That is not a big money maker is exactly why we will pay. The labels want money for the rights and Apple isn't likely to foot that bill and dig into their cash horde when they can make us pay for it.

The irony is that if Apple did have such a service' many folks would claim that they are doing it so we will voluntarily give up all our documents for the NSA etc to check out.

Do we know when the new iCloud pricing structure is going to go into effect? I was all ready to make the dive and pay for an extra 10GB at the old prices because I ran out of space, and then they announced the new prices. I'm obviously going to wait until I can get 20GB for $1 a month because it's way cheaper, but I'm basically not backing up to iCloud right now because I'm waiting for the price to change. I assume at this point we'll need to wait until iOS 8 until we can pay the new price, but it seems silly to wait months when they've already announced it. It's like announcing the new iPhone months before release - why would anyone buy the current one?

Agreed, apple should give everyone free unlimited photo and video storage. :eek:That way my 100+gb library would be stored for free.

Yeah, Apple should just give everything away for free. To hell with the shareholders. They're not expecting a return on their investment.

If you were in charge, Apple would be out of business. A public company is responsible to its shareholders. Its shareholders expect a return on their investment. For-profit companies are in business to make money. It's called capitalism.

When iOS 8 and Yosemite are released. Or at least one of them.

I believe I read that registered developers can request an extension of their current storage until like Nov, giving them coverage until the switch

But that's just me...

With the past storage prices, you'd be just in saying that.

With the much more sensible pricing tiers going forward, It is totally reasonable to pay for what you get.

, but it seems silly to wait months when they've already announced it. It's like announcing the new iPhone months before release - why would anyone buy the current one?

When something doesn't sell well, it doesn't hurt anything to announce in advance. They did with the Mac Pro, because the product was 5 years out of date and probably sold squat daily.

iCloud storage is overpriced and barely useful to people. In fact, because of its previous limitations (removed with iOS 8 and Yosemite), most people don't even really know what that storage is for...whats covered and whats not, whats counted and what isn't....

I doubt that there is huge growth in paid iCloud storage right now. But there will be come the fall...

why worry...If apple force people to buy iCloud storage at a yearly rate they'll just drive people back into the past, i.e. they'll buy their own cloud hard drives for home or simply plug their iPhones into their computers like there did in the 90's and 00's and apple will be left with a load of data centres with **** all in them

OP you never gave a reason why. I need to get a reason becuase I have no clue why it shouldn't count against you. Please explain that to me. Before you do the fact that it works out better for us (the users) does not count. Now if you can not explain a reason simple say say so.

The biggest reason is because their primary competitor in the mobile landscape, Google, already offers free unlimited photo backup. This isn't just for Android phones, either - you can enable it via the Google+ app on iPhone/iPad.

Other services, like Flickr, also offer ridiculously large amounts of storage for free (1TB, or 200 times more storage than Apple offers).

Microsoft also includes 1TB of free cloud storage with an Office 365 subscription. Even without Office 365, they give everyone 15GB totally free via OneDrive, which is cross-platform and also lets you enable auto-backup of your photos on iPhone/iPad/Android/etc. That's three times more free storage than Apple offers its own customers.

Apple is primarily a hardware company, and secondarily a software company. Services are a distant third place priority for them, which is why it isn't surprising that their cloud offering is so far behind everyone else. However, that's where the world is going and they need to start making it a priority. Having users defend them with lines like "but Apple is a business, they have to make money" is ridiculous, because all of their competitors are also businesses that have to make money and they still manage to have much better cloud services than Apple does. Apple can make its money where it excels - on hardware and software - and they should see cloud storage as a value-add that drives more business to their primary source of revenue, which is device sales.

everyone says about apple costs but their data centres are going to be zero energy soon, it won't cost them a penny. They'll be making more money hand over fist.

I'm sure you don't really think that the capex costs (likely in the USD billions) and the opex costs (likely in the USD 100 millions of huge server farms are all offset by "free" energy? I'm sure you were being very tongue-in-cheek.
