I just cannot justify £1150 for a phone...

So I think the iPhone X is totally overengineered and overpriced for my usage. However at the same time I don't want an iPhone 8 because it looks exactly like my current iPhone... what's the point in upgrading?

This makes me really sad there is no mid ranged iPhone. It makes me sad there is no iPhone 5c follow up, I loved that little phone, but I had to upgrade for Touch ID.

Lets assume you keep it for two years and sell it for £350 - that's £800 in total (assuming you don't want wireless charging, fast charging, to use 3.5mm headphones or one of the many other expensive extras that should really be included in the box).

That's only £1.10 per day. £1.10 for a smartphone that does so much.

Alternatively, buy a Samsung s8 for only £489. That's just 50p per day.

Even after you buy it you will regret that you have spent so much on phone. Every time you pickup the phone your heart will sink. If you find slight flaw/scratch/ you will be so much angry on Apple. Your life would never be the same now what whether you buys it or not.

TBH this event was a disappointment for me in terms of iPhones. I care lot about asthetics and apple has let me down. This is the first year i am confused whether to buy iphone or not. Regarding your post you can iPhone SE, its perfect for your needs. You mentioned small form factor like iphone 5C so iphone SE is your best bet.

No matter how you slice it, you're paying £1150 for a phone. You'll not be getting £350 until you sell the phone years later so you cannot realize the savings until you actually execute the transaction. Who knows he may get less (or more).

Secondly it seems by diving the number of days to achieve a tiny £1.10 value is logical gymnastics to justify the purchase. No matter how you slice it, you are going to be out £11150 to purchase the X. Given what it offers (merely catching up the S8), and high price, I don't think its a good use of money - just my opinion.

tl;dr. The OP's bank will be £1150 lower when he buys it, regardless of the potential future resale.

It's just a ridiculous amount to pay for a phone and we are to blame, if we didn't purchase phones of 800E, they wouldn't try to push it to 1000E.

I always had flagships and never payed more than 450E for a phone. I just wait for the perfect deal. My last phone was a Galaxy S7 Edge and I was super happy with it, sold it because I had a perfect deal for the iPad pro 10.5 which I needed it. Now I'll wait for a deal to buy the best phone that I can get with 450-500 tops.

Don't let companies with their marketing technics make you forget about the cost of the things. Value your hard working money.

I am telling myself if I do it on contract it's not so bad but he phone is still worth 999/1150 irrespective of how it's brought.

Paying for Barclays gadget insurance will be interesting to see if/when I get one if it's void due to the total cost.

My thoughts, too. I usually buy everything 'top of the range', but in this case, I went for the SE. Like you, I use my other gadgets for specific tasks and the iPhone is purely for music, calls, audio books, camera and Apple Pay. I never really watch videos or play games on it (iPad for all that).

Will use the SE until next year and see what Apple bring out then.

I need 128gb storage, I don't need 256gb and 64gb isn't enough as I have lots of videos and photos. It doesn't help that iCloud isn't backup software, it's sync.... so you need to store them locally which is so stupid.

My 6s battery life is terrible now and the screen is scratched to hell and it's battered. I need a new phone, but I'm not gonna spend hundreds on an old model when I can get a brand new Android for just a hundred more.... especially since old modes get dropped from new software.

It's so disappointing to me.

They could have started it at 900 and added the 1000 128gb tier at least.

I can get an lg g6 for 350...

But then I have to sell my MacBook, my iPad, AirPods and my Apple Watch just to switch.

i think it's a fair point and without the high resale value i would never buy an apple product. it's the only way i can justify the high price. i have been doing it for years and it never let me down.

It would just be your watch I reckon which you couldn't use and there are apps to sync with iCloud on android.

I got a 128GB SE for £400. I'm actually looking forward to not lugging around a huge phone now. It is an upgrade from my iPhone 6 anyway.

Like you, I (briefly) considered Android, but I use iCal, photos, iTunes, etc all so much. Just not feasible to use an Android phone with an iPad and macOS for my needs.

You can spend a bit more and get an arguably better Android, but if depends on how important iOS is for you.

I kind of wish the X would go the SE route and flop completely so that Apple knows they priced it way too high but I don't think that will happen.

It has always angered me they charge more in the uk, and don't take the exchange into account, we always pay extra it seems. From what you say, based on your use, there really is no point in you upgrading. If the phone you have now, suits your needs why buy a new phone to begin with?

If I was you I'd save my money until I actually need a new phone, and I wouldn't buy a new iPhone/Android just because I want one.

I now read your later posts and see that your battery is crap and you have scratches. Just change the battery and the screen. The 6S is still a solid phone for at least a year more.

I expected I'd be doing a lot of back and forth before deciding what I'd do this year. I haven't. I was dubious about the design when I saw the X in action during the keynote and then the nail in the coffin was the £999 price tag - for a 64GB version. That's just silly money and reading more into the specs, I cannot see anything that justifies that price tag. So it came down to whether I like the design enough to make the cost worthwhile. The answer is I don't even like the design enough to even consider owning it, never mind at £1000. If Samsung had pushed out an edge-to-edge screen design with that cutout at the top, they'd have been a laughing stock.

I'm also getting a much stronger feeling of being manipulated this year. The pricebump on the 8 vs 7 along with the removal of the middle storage tier to polarise the pricing enough to make the X seem like a no brainier for anybody who doesn't think for longer than 5 seconds. The outrageous extra premium being charged outside the US. Then there's the things that don't affect me like hikes in prices for AppleCare+ and increasing the upfront/upgrade payment on iUP. Advertising selling points that actually require additional overpriced accessories. Apple have always been a premium retailer but it's only recently it's started to feel like they want to rip me off.

So, the alternatives. The iPhone 6SSS or keep the one I've got until something comes along that makes me want to buy.

Apple have made it hard to justify imo:
Starting with 64GB instead of 128GB at £999 - For some 64GB isnt enough and 256 is overkill, furthermore at that price the least you could do is make the base storage 128GB.
Lack of fast charging brick and cable in the box - Thats basic, no excuse why you shouldn't include it especially on your top end model.

I really do like the X but I just dont think its justified its price tag, I feel like I should be spending that £1000 on something more constructive and beneficial.
