Meanwhile when you purchased iphones or smartphones before someone else somewhere in the world said I cannot justify paying £500+ for a phone. It's ok. Just don't buy it. Leave it to those who were like you before to buy this phone.

Neither can I, which is after much thought unless a good deal somehow pops up, I'll be skipping the X and remaining with my iPhone 7 - Well thats the plan, who knows maybe Apple will sucker me in.

iPhone 7?
I wouldn't upgrade to a new iPhone even if I had a 6S. And that's from someone that uses 4 apps simultaneously when I'm out running several times per week. I will upgrade now because my 6+ does not have the RAM I need.

Yes iPhone 7.

I'm just somebody that likes to have new tech and love the look of the iPhone X, I dont neccessarily need to upgrade.
My phone still works fine.

Like you I use the same apps day in day out.

Just one of those things, but yeah unless a magic money tree comes around I dont think I'll get one.

I'll just carry on my iPhone 7 payment plan with Apple.

I'll never understand people who say this.

A phone is that white plastic thing your parents have on their kitchen wall.

Smartphones are absolutely not just phones. They are incredibly powerful, totally mobile, always connected computers that allow you to do so much every single day. And all of that fits in your pocket.

To me, they're a pinnacle of modern day technology and an absolute bargain.

To say it's just a phone is like saying my MacBook Pro is just a typewriter.
Call it what you want. It doesn't change the fact that at £999 it's almost double the price of a technically and functionally comparable S8.

To me it's only a phone, I have a Laptop, TV, Desktop PC and an iPad Pro. So I have better devices for doing anything serious on. My phone is used to make calls, text, take photos and listen to music. I'll browse the net for five mins a day and maybe watch a short YouTube video, but I'm not going to do anything that requires a lot of effort as I have something better to use.

So I think the iPhone X is totally overengineered and overpriced for my usage. However at the same time I don't want an iPhone 8 because it looks exactly like my current iPhone... what's the point in upgrading?

Apple have priced me out of the market, not because I cannot afford it, but because the price just exceeds my usage on a phone.

This makes me really sad there is no mid ranged iPhone. It makes me sad there is no iPhone 5c follow up, I loved that little phone, but I had to upgrade for Touch ID.

The whole event left me numb and now Android will have to be the place I go to. I don't want to because I'm invested in the ecosystem, sadly though Apple refuse to create tiers. I don't find the iPhone 8 price appealing either tbh...

Then don't. It's that simple. No need to start an entire thread about it.

The issue is many people fall into the trap of double counting that money. They say I'll spend the 1,000 for the phone because I'll get 350 when I go to sell it. 2 years later, they sell it, so they can justify the cost of the new phone
Exactly. It's frightening how irrational people have become.
Well nothing to worry about then. The market will decide. If it isn't worth it people won't buy it.
True.

It'll be interesting to see how the next couple of years pan out for Apple.

I agree 100%. The iPhone 4 was a phone with a pretty good mobile computer attached. But now, we are using some of the fastest mobile computers in the world, that many use as their only computer for business, pictures, and mobile communications. These are computers that can make a phone call on top of all the above.

I will admit however, that these mobile devices no longer need upgrading every 2 years. My battery lasts at least 16 hours, my screen is nice and clear, and mobile computing is still extremely quick. And I'm rocking the 6 plus .

These type of threads are so annoying. No one cares if you can or can't afford to buy an iPhone.
If you read what people are saying, it's not an affordability issue. It's an issue of the pricing pushing beyond the point that people feel they'd get value for the money spent. I think the price is ludicrous, therefore I won't pay it. That doesn't mean I can't afford it.

And, this being an iPhone forum, discussions about the pricing of a new model are exactly what I'd expect to see two days after unveiling.

For me, this year what is slightly off putting is that there is no 'mid ground' between the 64gb and 256gb and the price jump is £150, to be clear it's not the affordability that's a problem, it's justifying the spend, when I have a working 7plus 128gb (regarding an 8/8plus, I have more time to think about the X)

I've decided to wait until the hype dies and supply catches up. Then scour the used market for an iPhone X for under retail. I'm sure many will have buyers remorse. I don't need to be the first to have it, don't care about bragging or showing it off. I have a 7 Plus to hold me over until the time comes.

Not because I can't afford the sticker price, but because I don't want to pay that much.

I can get an lg g6 for 350...

But then I have to sell my MacBook, my iPad, AirPods and my Apple Watch just to switch.

Why do you have to sell all of those things just because you get an LG?

The Apple Watch I get...but the rest?

Because people just fall for marketing. Many don't actually know what they are buying and what can be mixed and matched.

Why you think so many moaning about the price? Marketing usually hooks them but they can't afford this rounds.

Listen. I was once in your position. But, don't make your old iphone become a burden.
You will lose a lot after 1 year of "holding off" for a new one you can afford or want to buy.
Remember the golden rule: an iPhone that is worth today £ 700 is going to be about £ 500 next year once new iPhone is announced (depends on how good you kept it).
Say, I bought 128 GB iPhone 7 last year that was 699. I kept it in very good condition.
If I throw into eBay, I will get around 500 pounds give or take (-10% fees). This number will go down a lot more next year. If you decide to upgrade to iPhone 8 - it makes more sense, it is 699 and you will get about 300 pounds off when you "recycle" iPhone 7 back to Apple. Ok, say you want iPhone X. So you are trading in iPhone 7 for 300 pounds and getting iPhone X (64) for 700 pounds. Or just sell of on Ebay and try getting better deal, wait for some time, add money and buy what you want!

basically TL; DR - don't keep your current (old) iPhone if you have intentions to upgrade anyway, get rid of it as the price will go down every month.

That's the Apple Tax. It's part of owning Apple stuff.

Just look at a cable. A spare lightning cable is much more than double the cost of a spare it USB-C cable.

Well nothing to worry about then. The market will decide. If it isn't worth it people won't buy it.

Consumers should purchase what they can afford, not base with they want. I understand new technology is fun and exciting, but if they can't justify the means to pay your monthly bill or for the entire device, then they should not be purchasing it. But, for those who know they want the latest technology, there are methods to have the latest device, by saving up overtime to purchase it or budgeting.

Looks like this year will be the first year I don’t buy a new iPhone. I currently have a 7+. I use it a lot. I’m not that impressed with the iPhone 8 (which even if I recycle my phone will cost £550 for a minor upgrade). I can afford to buy the iPhone X but it’s not worth that to me (even as a heavy user). Converting the US cost and adding 20% VAT comes in at around £1050 but even at that price, I think it’s over priced for what it is.

I think the issue for me is what happens next year? The iPhone 8 is probably going to get a refresh and become the 8S so will look the same with minor upgrades. We don’t know if the iPhone X is a one off, whether they’ll be an upgraded version next year or whether Apple will release an entirely new phone. History says it’s a new phone every two years with minor upgrades each year. Recent speculation suggested Apple might be moving to a three year cycle. Either way, it now means we might not see the next generation iPhone until 2019 which leaves iPhone 7 users who aren’t persuaded by the iPhone (because it’s too similar to the iPhone 7) and the iPhone x because cost or that awful notch) with a dilemma whether to keep their current phone for three years (let’s be honest, these devices don’t really last three years with battery life and heavy usage), get the interim models next year or leave the Apple ecosystem.

I love the phrasing of being ‘forced out’.

Firstly and most importantly who’s holiding a gun to your head and forcing you to upgrade.

The OP said they will ‘have’ to ditch all his other Apple stuff because of this. Surely there’s a third option - keep the existing and capable device for another year? It’s all very melodramatic.

£1000/$1000 is a lot of money, I agree. But someone said if you can afford it get the best smartphone you can because it’s the most important piece of technology we own in this society.

If your current phone does everything you need then you don't need to upgrade just now? And looking at their range, they now seem to have a phone to suit every budget, with good performance across all of them?
