Sorry, all the bitching about the 150 to go from 64 to 256, do people forget what it was before? 100 per tier... this is a bigger jump so it seems to me to make sense, despite the lack of the 128 option - in fact in that regard, you're getting 192 gb for 150 vs 96 gb for 100 or 224 for 200

I'd be losing 64GB, but 128GB is a bit of overkill as I have unlimited data now, which I didn't have when I got the phone. 128GB just encourages me to and lets me be a hoarder.

You nailed the hoarder remark lol. What do you mean by unlimited data? Are referring to your data plan? or you have unlimited cloud storage?

Unlimited data plan, so I don't have to store a ton of music on my phone (most of which I never listen to anyway). If there's something I'm dying to listen to that's not locally stored, I can just stream from Play Music without worrying about overage.

Easy fix - don' buy it - you can't justify it - fair enough.

If you just want a phone to make calls there are plenty of dirt cheap options out there - maybe twenty bucks or even free on some plans. Some phone offer a lot of smart phone functions for those prices.

Looks like this year will be the first year I don’t buy a new iPhone. I currently have a 7+. I use it a lot. I’m not that impressed with the iPhone 8 (which even if I recycle my phone will cost £550 for a minor upgrade). I can afford to buy the iPhone X but it’s not worth that to me (even as a heavy user). Converting the US cost and adding 20% VAT comes in at around £1050 but even at that price, I think it’s over priced for what it is.

I think the issue for me is what happens next year? The iPhone 8 is probably going to get a refresh and become the 8S so will look the same with minor upgrades. We don’t know if the iPhone X is a one off, whether they’ll be an upgraded version next year or whether Apple will release an entirely new phone. History says it’s a new phone every two years with minor upgrades each year. Recent speculation suggested Apple might be moving to a three year cycle. Either way, it now means we might not see the next generation iPhone until 2019 which leaves iPhone 7 users who aren’t persuaded by the iPhone (because it’s too similar to the iPhone 7) and the iPhone x because cost or that awful notch) with a dilemma whether to keep their current phone for three years (let’s be honest, these devices don’t really last three years with battery life and heavy usage), get the interim models next year or leave the Apple ecosystem.
$79 plus $6.95 shipping to replace battery.

Okay, so don't buy it. What makes the Android market better for you in this regard considering your limited uses? Why not just buy an SE for $350?

$79 plus $6.95 shipping to replace battery.

Costs more than that in the UK. Sure you can get get your two year old device serviced but an £800-£1149 device shouldn't need to have the battery replaced at cost after 1-2 years.

What you see is what happens when a visionary gets replaced by an accountant.

The prices of the iPhone X are not to pay for some innovative features.

Rather, they are there to introduced new pricing tiers and pad Apple's profit.

Speaking as an AAPL shareholder, I say keep it up. Profit is good.

AAPL understands that no matter how much their legions of fanboys whine and complain, they'll still buy the product. And that's all that matters.

What makes you think the SE "flopped"?

From what I read it is a very popular iPhone that has been selling really well.

Not sure exactly what makes it a failure…

I always read that the SE is popular but in my anecdotal experience I saw many more 5cs in the wild than I’ve ever seen SEs

As a none shareholder I hope the days of blind loyalty come to an end. I want reasonably priced exciting releases, not stifled innovation because the masses buy it anyway. There should be a way to make a profit and deliver market leading features and as consumers we should demand that.

All true, just wait until the first ones hit ebay, with low availability, the X will be getting incredible prices. It has always angered me they charge more in the uk, and don't take the exchange into account, we always pay extra it seems. But I don't care, I have not been stupid enough to buy a new iphone since the 3G years ago. I do like the iphone but never feel I need the newest. My 5S does me just fine ;)

Cost more? cough cough

In life, you can never justify overpriced purchases. You buy it because you like it and don't mind over paying because you get enjoyment from it. If you have the money and you love shiny new tech, pull the trigger. If money is tight then don't justify it.
Absolutely, nobody needs the new top of the line of anything...

You complain about "£1150 for a phone". With 64 gigabytes it's £999. So either 64 GB is enough for you, then you are right, you cannot justify £1150, buy the one for £999. Or 64 GB is _not_ enough for you, then you have the justification.

Of course you might not need the features of the iPhone X. Then an iPhone 8 should be fine for you. Or an iPhone 7 which you can get with 128 GB. Or an iPhone 6S. Or an iPhone 5SE. Pick the phone with the features that fit your requirements and the price that fits your wallet.

I’m sure that no one can really justify that kind of expense, but, it’s only money.

If you are lucky enough to get an X on day one, you could probably flip it for a bit of profit then buy another at a later date using the profit to reduce the cost.

To me it's only a phone, I have a Laptop, TV, Desktop PC and an iPad Pro. So I have better devices for doing anything serious on. My phone is used to make calls, text, take photos and listen to music. I'll browse the net for five mins a day and maybe watch a short YouTube video, but I'm not going to do anything that requires a lot of effort as I have something better to use.

So I think the iPhone X is totally overengineered and overpriced for my usage. However at the same time I don't want an iPhone 8 because it looks exactly like my current iPhone... what's the point in upgrading?

Apple have priced me out of the market, not because I cannot afford it, but because the price just exceeds my usage on a phone.

This makes me really sad there is no mid ranged iPhone. It makes me sad there is no iPhone 5c follow up, I loved that little phone, but I had to upgrade for Touch ID.

The whole event left me numb and now Android will have to be the place I go to. I don't want to because I'm invested in the ecosystem, sadly though Apple refuse to create tiers. I don't find the iPhone 8 price appealing either tbh...

It makes sense if you need to show off

Because people just fall for marketing. Many don't actually know what they are buying and what can be mixed and matched.

I don’t know if it’s that or just that some people like their stuff to “match”

Having said that, I don’t agree with that sentiment and pick the best tool for the job, which is why I have a Galaxy S8, a Garmin Fenix, an iPad Pro 10.5, an iMac and a Surface Pro 4: I’m not tied to a single manufacturer or “ecosystem”.

Personally I think it works much better and gives me far more flexibility than the alternative
