Basically this. While intel may reveal Sandy Bridge chips at CES and release them to OEM, Apple still has to get them, put them in systems, test them, produce them, etc. You're in for a disappointment if you were expecting a new MBP in January.

Perhaps Apple and Intel would cooperate together on this one.

I'm sure they do. I think Apple is already integrating and testing Sandy Bridge Chips for their next revision. Most probably we will see the next generation of MBPs in February.

I thought the title was a joke, too. But after reading the thread, I agree that you (OP) made a good decision. If you can walk or bike wherever you need to be, that car was only costing you money. And if you need the newest Mac for work, then you just have to find a way to get it, including selling non-essential possessions.

Yup, I'm sure of it, Apple probably gets near RTM Sandy Bridge chips from Intel so Apple can design the new logic boards ahead of time. We will probably see a new MBP after the January iPad event (if there is one this year) possibly between February and April timeframe.

Tip to the OP, Im in SEMO, and before I started driving I biked everywhere, even during winter. My trick is one of two things.

1. 20oz. Dr. Pepper with a shot of Hot Damn 100.(Only if you are of age of course) Its just enough to keep you warm, without getting you inebriated.

2. 20oz cup of cappuccino from the gas station. In the cold, you can literally feel the warmth of the liquid spreading through your chest.

I had no car for a year or two. It works great if you have a roomate or goodfriends.

Best years of my life. Carpooled to the market, so I always had a shopping buddy. Never was a DD, and when I was, people really appreciated it. Could get out of anything by "not having a car". Girls didnt really care, in fact, some seemed to think it was cool. I got pretty good at public transportation and Craigslist.

To all the people who think its funny he sold his car for a portable computer...well, a car is a liability. It costs money. It takes you places, but it sounds like he works from home. He can still use: trains/cabs/bicycles/walking/rides to get to coffeeshops/libraries/most anywhere if he lives in a city.

A computer on the other hand can actually make you money, especially if you use it to do more than word process.

Personally I'd have found a job and let them provide me with a PC, but that's just me.

lucky for you the new sandy bridge comes with a set of wheels and a engine to drive you around its gonna be fast.
j.k
we all gotta do what we gotta do to get what we want.

Strange, strange people.

Why not keep the car and...I dunno...WORK for the money for the Sandy Bridge?

What am I missing here?

So the guy really wants a MBP and he is willing to make sacrifices to get it. I would not have gotten my college degrees without my laptops and when I purchased my MBP, I made massive financial sacrifices. Without my MBP, I would have never reached advanced degrees as I have severe learning and moderate physical disabilities; I cannot write cursive at all, I print so poorly that it is illegible, and I cannot process and understand information when all of my focus is on trying to write it as neat as possible.

If anything, that speaks to the quality of the OP's character by showing determination. I don't have a car currently; I walk, bike, occasionally hitchhike, and use public transportation (I live in a big city tho), and in the process I save thousands of dollars each year. I try to give some of that money to a local charity that provides poor-as-hell students with computers and other educational equipment that they cannot afford; I often buy used laptops from people I know and donate them as well. I was in the situation myself not very long ago and someone who cared about me assisted me in realizing my dreams. Everyone says 'get an education', but if you are too poor to afford some form of a computer, you are screwed in so many ways no matter how smart and capable you may be. Cars are a money-pit and depending on your location and your life, you may or may not be able to function without one.

If you are financially able to afford both a reliable automobile and a new MBP, give thanks as not everyone is as fortunate as you. (Please don't misconstrue that as 'you have it easy' or 'you have it all handed to you'; most people who can afford both work their butts off for everything they have and they absolutely deserve it. With that said, people who have both may not be able to understand the dynamics of living near poverty or on a very restricted income.

If you haven't already, consider donating your old laptops to educational causes. If you are really in the Christmas spirit, give someone who means a lot to you a new laptop whom you know that they cannot afford on it their own (you can get them as cheap as $300 pretty regularly). If you are feeling super jolly, give that college student you love a 13 inch MBP; they really are the 'rave' on campuses and I would say that they are one of the best education tools since the pen. I've had a gazillion people tell me something along the lines of 'I love your computer, they are so amazing/cool/fast/reliable/etc, I wish I could afford one but no matter how much I work I can't, I'd do nearly anything to get one'. I wish I had the money to buy every college student a MBP.
