OP prolly plans his vacation around macworld just to hear jobs speak in person... just like my former roomates apple nerd friends from humboldt.

What you saw was a plea by a guy that is losing millions by having to replace defective phones and who lost 30 million in one day in stock market plus the millions he is losing replacing phones.

Heartfelt? More like trying to flame the fire and ache in his ass where his wallet is. iPhone is a great device but for a company that charges way more than anybody else for their products, they screwed the pooch on this one. But, they do have the best support of anybody else selling cell phones.

Before you whine about it, look, you can death grip your iPhone 2G too... it is indeed a problem for all phones. Get over it.

I just watched Steve jobs speech and thought it was emotional, heart felt, and presented all the data necessary to prove that all the complaining is baseless. He is even giving a free case just to be nice. It is very rare that you have the boss of such a large company handle all the PR for the company. My phone works great it looks awesome, it has awesome apps, I call people all the time and they answer. Facetime kicks arse, and my family loves it. And it takes some damn nice pictures. The only mistake apple made was telling people where the antennae was. Great phone by far the best piece of tech on the market.

+1. BTW I made my test - I took a old LG phone (not a smart phone) - old flip phone, squeezed it and ... same behavior - 5 bars became 1. So I do have to agree with Jobs that this is a wide-spread problem. If you do not see a drastic fall in bars, the phone is just fooling you with some algorithm that prevents the bars from dropping quick. Also with the latest software update on IP4, you can truly see how strong the signal really is - IP4 was showing 3 bars, while LG was showing 5, where in fact LG never had that much to begin with.
Also, just saw a video of a guy demonstrating Swype on Droid. Same issue - he holds it tight 4 bars go to 1 - he flips that phone into landscape - bars go back up. The fact that no one made a big deal out of this, surprises me now even more.

So, not only Steve Jobs defended the IP4, he outlined the line of research that should lead to a design that will prevent antenna issues. I bet the new race for figuring this out has started.

I find it HUGELY entertaining how many people are trying to speculate exactly how Steve Jobs felt or how he intended to come across, or how they FELT he came across.

The only bloody person who will ever know is likely his wife, and I am sure as hell that she ain't gonna be talking about it.

Keep up the speculation though, it seems to go from blind adoration to blind antagonism.

Entertaining as hell.:apple:

Quick search turned up this picture of the OP:

Savor Steve Jobs now. He can't live forever. Without Jobs, Apple will go back to mediocrity and niche markets just like the time when Jobs resigned from Apple in the mid-1980's until his return 10 years later.

Apple may never be the same again without Steve Jobs. The vision and perfect pitchman will be gone. He is still Apple's heart and soul. Their magician where everything works like magic.

I can't replicated it on my 2G....

It's not about death gripping for me. When I naturally grasp the iPhone 4 in a phone call my pinky and index rest on 'x marks the spot' and 11% of my calls drop. This never happened with previous iPhones.

I showed the Apple Genius that browsing in landscape required two fingers over 'x marks the spot' and slowed espn.com right in front of him.

iPhone 4 is fantastic and gorgeous but their is something fundamentally wrong with the new antenna design. Something that did not exist without opening previous phones. You can touch the antenna directly.

10dB are lost by my skin touching metal. 10dB are lost because the signal passes through my hand. All phones have the passing through the hand issue. NONE HAVE THE APPLICATION OF TOUCH ISSUE, this is reserved for iPhone 4.

Ok so it sounds like your in the very slim minority of people who actually have an issue with this, and even then only 11% of the time. So what's the problem you know the solutions, either get a bumper/case or return it, seems simple to me. Don't get me wrong I feel bad for you it's an amazing phone and if I were one of the less than 1% affected by this I would be pretty frustrated too, but it sounds like the bigger issue is probably your local network, a weak network can result in dropped calls even if your not touching it.

Could you provide a picture of your phone? Does it really look that awesome in this rubber case? Or perhaps it looks just like all other cell phones in the cases?
