MBA vs. MB screen compared again. This time I went into a dark room and compared with BEST angle possible. I'm not lying guys, I tried to make this work. Too much time was wasted trying to get a good color profile to make it average, I think that's ridiculous.

This isn't about shaky loose battery covers, dust under the screen, loud trackpad or spacebar clicking - this is about the #1 thing you interface most with your laptop. The fact is, the display should have been head and shoulders above the last gen. MB's. Display prices have decreased since last rev., it's LED backlit and prices of the MB's have increased. There should be no comparison of last gen. vs. alumibook but people are torn on which is better. Go figure???

I expected the display to have kept up with the rest of the computers great features but mehh...

Wow! Actually when viewing a dark movie on my MB, it looks good. Within the "good" angles. There seems to be a bad batch of panels out there. not all MBS have such a subpar screen.

Pic's?? I'm hoping that maybe there are good screens out there. I'd love to give another MB a try if someone can show me a good one.

Bought mine first day available and maybe later ones or different panels are better. MR members aren't the only unhappy customers:

Can any confirm this is an accurate representation of the new MB display? I didn't observe such 'light' blacks upon my viewing in the Apple store, but that is definitely noticeable.

I did the same thing, played the exact same scene of Ironman on both my glassbook and MBA. Glassbook's screen was definitely inferior. However, no where near as bad as the photos posted. I tried taking my photos too, it also turned out a lot worse than what it's like with your naked eyes.

I also noticed one more thing. The glass on the MBA is treated with some kind of an anti-reflective coating, but not on the glass on the MB screen. This definitely made a difference too.

I took a beating selling my MBA on eBay to get the MB and couldn't be happier. The screen looks great and I can actually watch a video without one of the cores shutting down. All that and it was $200 cheaper.

Comparison

I used the same picture (one I have taken) on both computers and took the picture below.

The MBA screen is better but I am not one that would notice that the MB was inferior unless I was directly comparing two screens. I'm just not that observant. ;-(

Sorry about the reflection of the light in the top right hand corner of the MB!

A few more photos for everyone to judge (MBA left, MB right)

IMO, MB's screen is poor for viewing dark movies - Yes
MB's screen is poor for everyday use - NO

Both of yours look a lot better than mine did but you've come to the same conclusion nonetheless. Not a bad screen for a lot of things - as long as they don't have a preponderance of dark hues. The backlight bleed & extra glass cover exacerbate the problem.

I was happy with my MB for almost a week before I started actually using it and becoming aware of the deficiencies. Even tried more than a dozen color cal. and couldn't make it anything I was comfortable holding on to. I bought it to replace my Air and was excited when it was released and had to have one but back to the Air I am.

Still trying to decide on 1) getting a new MB and trying again, 2) getting a MBP which for only $400 more is nice but much bigger than I want, 3) wait for new Airs to hit the shelves and if good, get one of those. It is nice to see other users posting what their's are comparatively like without the emotional rants.

What is even more hilarious is the fact that the MB is being compared to MBA time and time again.

The high end MBA is ~$1,000 more than the high end MB. Of course it will have a better screen. It's ~$1,000 more!

People, compare the MB to the old MB. That will be the correct comparison and you'll find the screen more than acceptable.

The rest of the 99.99% of MB buyers are enjoying the heck out of their unibody machines!

How was this thread hijacked? We are commenting on experiences we have had with the current series of MacBooks, and after all, this thread is "I love my new MacBook!" Believe it or not, Apple isn't perfect and people have rants about their machines.

I've seen the new MacBooks, one of my friends I see just about daily has one and the screen has more reflection than my MacBook does. Are you supposed to be able to see yourself when you type?

That's "good"?! i guess we just have different standard!

That is even worse than I expected.

My MB finally arrived today! :D Yay!

I'm loving it so far! I have a take-home midterm due tomorrow so I don't have that much time to play around with it right now (other than when I'm procrastinating, which is right now lol), but so far, I'm so happy with it.

Then again, this is coming from someone who has had a really ghetto Toshiba laptop for almost 4 years and feels like it's going to die on me any day now. lol

Anyhoo, just thought I'd chime in with the other happy MacBookers. :)

I find it amusing to see people fight over an LCD, an LCD. Ok, so we know the screen is faulty, it is, I have an Al MacBook with 9C89. People how are enjoying your new MacBooks and people how don't like the screen, here is a hard core fact, the screen is of low quality for what we paid.

Now, on with the next point.

I just played Iron Man in dark scenes and tilted the angles. It was horrible; however, the angles that showed the awfulness of the screen, were angles I will not ever see a movie. Blacks were not blacks rather blues and grays. However, like I said, the angles are too steep or too sided for me to enjoy a movie. I see a movie straight one and like that my screen works.

Next point,

People who returned their MacBooks due to the screen. We understand your expectations were high and you expected something better for your money. I am not blaming you for that, you have that right to brag as you paid for it (so did I). However, bashing others just because they find it nice is a big no-no. Remember they also used hard earned money (specially in this frail economy) to buy their dream Mac, and all people want to do is express that joy. Least people can do is congratulate and give advice on what to do if people are new, we don't want people to bash our choices.

You have to remember some people come from PC computers where Vista and the combined crappy hardware make one hellish relationship which makes screens even crappier. That is my experience, I came from HP (dv1660se from Aug 2006, that was a good screen but horrible under the sun or colors where way to hot). Others experience may be different. Regarding the blacks, I find the MacBooks black better than my previous computer's blacks. Some people also experience this which is why we find it an awesome computer. I mean, I am not happy to know a previous MacBook has better screen, but hey, this screen is way better than my previous one (2006 screen).

Closing remarks...

I see no reason to fight between each other. I mean some are happy, while some are not. Everyone has a right to brag about what they purchase (brag for good or bad). For those who like to post in others peoples thread, please don't. We understand your frustration, but its no reason to ruin the amazement or awing of others just because you had a bad experience. One thread is enough to explain to people about the problems plaguing the MacBook, there is no reason to spread them into every post. I mean ask for a sticky for defects on the Mac and stick to that, let others be happy.

I may get bashed for this post, but I don't care. I just want to make people understand lets keep ourselves civil and respect our own choices. My $0.02

As I have mentioned before, I came on this board as part of my due diligence to research a product that I will be purchasing. I am a new mac user coming from a lifetime usage of Windows machines and wanted a change to the stability of OS X. I'm not here to increase my e-penis size or to find self validation. I am passed that stage of my life. I came on here to find the facts and gain objective knowledge on the new macbook. My intention was not to get into pissing matches but I found some users on this board who consistently portray aspects of the Macbook as unusable and "crappy."

In reality, that is not the case. I'm not saying the screen is the best screen on the market but it's not the worst. It still makes for an overall great entry-level notebook experience.

That's all I'm going to say for now. I have to finish a presentation for tomorrow's board meeting. I'll post more when I get my new MB.

And I want to thank those who have posted great info over the last while since the launch of the new Macbooks. I've learned a lot about the Macbook and differences between Windows and OSX. If you can filter out all the "noise" this board can be a great information mine.

I love my 2.4 Glassbook my screen is fine, Ofcourse it's gonna suck if you look at sideways

Let's keep the insults and personal jabs out, folks, and stay on-topic. Thanks.

Same thing I say. Longtime Windows user here also, and I still find the screen fit for my needs (not the best screen but its better than my previous one)
