Thanks for posting your review aevan. It's good to learn feedback from users. My MBP is mid-2010. It's still working well but I might look into a new one before long.

I understand that many people have legitimate gripes with the price, and features of the new MacBook pro.

However I would like a place to discuss it with other people who are enthusiastic, and planning to buy one. I would ask your courtesy to not post negatively in here.

That being said I am really looking forward to the new MacBook pro. The new smaller profile will surely be appreciated in my bag. Not sure how much better they can make the screen, but initial impressions from the media, suggest it looks great. That track pad will be pretty great to navigate with. I am willing to give the touch bar a chance, I can really see it making sense for creative apps. Im sure it will be a adjustment, but having a persistent adaptable control bar may actually be indispensable one day.

Also pretty stoked to get a space Gray color.

What are you looking forwards to on the new MacBook pro?

Touch ID. I mean it's like so not even talked about at this point but I've wanted Touch ID on the MacBook ever since the 5s came out YEARS ago. Being able to just sign into my mac or open 1Password or use apps and Apple Pay....yeah. It's needed at this point in my opinion.

I'm torn between the non-touch model because I can get it now and it's cheaper and the base 13" model with touch. I'm leaning towards the 13" with touch and am keen to see how it lives up to its '100% improved' graphics.

New article by Verge gushing over it. They always "get it"

They are saying using it feels exactly what I assumed it would feel like.

The new MacBook Pro looks and feels so good it's unreal

That's one of the things that's tough to put a price on but Apple makes most of their devices so that touching it is pleasant. There are a lot of high spec laptops that don't feel anywhere as nice. Whether that's worth the high price tag to people is a personal decision. I like it though.

Going from:
2010 non retina 15" Macbook Pro
2.53 i5
8GB
330M GT (not working)
upgraded 250Gb SSD (only 60Mb read 80mb write) uses old PCI board

To
2016 Retina 15" Macbook Pro
2.7 i7
16GB
460 Pro
1TB SSD

I am also very excited, although not sure if I should get 512GB instead. Plan on doing GoPro editing and DSLR photo edits. Gonna use Final cut pro for the first time. I know I can use externals, I already have 3 TB worth, but I think it would be nice to not need to carry that around all the time.

I still can't decide if I should change my order to 512Gb from 1TB. Its driving me crazy:confused:

I'm in a slightly different position in that I was rocking a modded 17" for a long time, it finally packed in early this year so I bought the 2015....which is a nice machine and does the job. ( though regarding 'build quality', the 17" felt much more solid!)

My initial plan was to buy the 2016 MBP and pass the 2015 onto the wife ( she needs a laptop for Indesign/photoshop primarily)

I work in animation/motion graphics and this upgrade just isn't hitting enough buttons/enough of a step up over the 2015 to upgrade, I was hoping to be 'blown away', but this isn't it...so I'm in a fortunate position to ride this one out and see where we're at, hopefully 2/3/4 years down the line...

Hi,
I have already ordered 13" with touch bar. I think it's a big step forward for notebooks leaving everything behind.

I'm power user (CFD, modeling, and a lot of scientific computation) and need reliable tool for a job. Nothing is better than MBPr.

Going to single-type-of-port future is really good for users - and will be painful though. There is so much (now) legacy standards behind:
(At least) three different ports for video
Three major ports for data transfer
As many as notebook manufacturers power supply solutions etc.

When you think about it You realize how confusing and messed up it is! It's high and good time to make an order here (and there are no competing solutions).

I just hope that apple will skip lightning port and go USB-C. This will simplify things a lot.
And this audio port left in MBPr 2016 is act of cowardice not courage. It's inconsistent with the whole line up. But the overall vision is very clear for me especially in recent iPhone, iPad Pro and MacBook.

I was a little worried after reading so many negative posts here. But honestly I didn't give it much of thought. Now it turned out that I could just switch cables for my external drives (5$ x 3). However I still have to use VGA port to hookup to projectors at Uni. So I have to switch dongle to USB-C version.
For USB drives I bought tiny dongle USB-A--> USB-C and it's temporarily solved.

As dumb as this sounds, I am stoked for macOS, coming from Windows 7 that will be a big treat. However, on a less pathetic front, I am most excited for the new wide color gamut screen with better viewing angles. Going from a 720p screen that reflects everything to 3k is going to melt my retinas (no pun intended).

Well said, and dont worry about all the negativity. Its normal. Thats how people identify around as consumers around here. It gets attention to be "anti"

Agreed. Maybe when people start getting them there will turn out to be some killer feature that makes it worth the price. But so far I don't see it.

I just got a new 15" rMBP with dGPU for $2200 in June and was kind of kicking myself for not waiting. But these prices are $600 more for a 1/2 lighter and faster SSD. I do not see the value.
You mean 200 more.
2200 vs 2400.
A lot more features than just lighter and faster ssd too.

I'm really looking forward to mine! Only real pain point for me is no 32GB of RAM, but with the crazy-fast SSD I think I'll be able leverage that for certain programs to get around the 16GB max. Everything else is great. Really looking forward to that wide-gamut screen, TouchID, and the new Touch Bar.

The price was a bit of a shocker, but I've been saving up for awhile and don't have another option besides waiting for a possible refresh a year from now. The last laptop I owned was an IBM Thinkpad T40p (~13 years old now) so the price wasn't gonna stop me from getting this one.

"Rated up to 60 watts (20 volts at 3 amps) power"

The 15" uses a 87 watt USB-C power supply so this doesn't seem to be safe to use.
Looks hideous too.
It's safe, it will just charge slower than the 100W cable that Apple ships with the 15" charger. I expect Belkin to come out with a new cable that will charge the 15" at full performance though.

At first i was kinda shocked about the price, but i'm using my current one for 6 years, late 2009 mbp15 bought feb. 2010. I was thinking about buying a 2015 cause it would be little cheaper, but seriously, i really want to try the touch-bar, the bigger trackpad, the keyboard, to see the new screen and so on.

I will be using it for many years, so why not invest. I am really excited to get one, can't wait :D

I expect i'm going to love this new laptop. Now i mostly use iPads, my laptop is a PowerPC laptop from 2005 that I ran a business on. Then i got tired of the 14" screen and got an iMac in 2009, and use it as my main computer when i need one. I'm a programmer at work and use Windows and Dell desktops.

It will be nice to have something portable again. I don't concentrate on hardware specs so those don't worry me. If it does what I need it to do I'll be happy. I deal all day long with guys arguing over Windows vs Linux, arguing over Linux distributions, that I tune out that kind of stuff.

This laptop won't have heavy use, but I need macOS for some of my programs. I'll be using duet and my big ipad as a second monitor. It's going to fix nicely into our collection of tech-a portable hub that can drive the peripherals I need, and that I can take into work to get updated without running up against our monthly satellite data cap.

I was a bit disappointed in the announcement. I built it up in my mind as something stupendous. But i think its a solid update.

I love the idea of the touch bar. I'm a fast typer, and even though I can touch type, there is never any time when i don't look down at my keys. If I'm writing paragraphs I might stop and think, when I'm writing code it's in short bursts. Having the touch bar on the keyboard won't be a usage problem. It will make navigating through some of my complex applications very easy.

I love the creativity coming out of the companies, the touch bar, even microsofts dial is nice. They may not be perfected yet, but point to a nice future.

Husband got a linux xps13, so it will be interesting to compare the build quality.

With what the Macbook Pro is now, I'd like to see Apple complete their computer line. A very good upgrade to the iMac thats really spectacular, and a upgrade to the pro to make it the box every one seems to want that's totaly configurable

In my own opinion, the fact that there are no USB ports it's a deal breaker. I wish they would have replaced the wires for the iPhone 7. Why not freaking ditch the headphone jack and add a USB port?

This is the year of the adapter. It will suck a lot less in the near future.

Macs are used for music production a lot. Need aux, unlike iPhone which bluetooth is fine.

People love to complain... They never used the keyboard, but surely it'll be awful - DetroitBORG showed in his unboxing how much more stable they are than previous gen and said that travel was much improved over 12" MacBook.

They take for granted how much thinner and lighter it is, but the extra portability does make an actual difference when you're using it. Remember when the MacBook Air felt thin? The Pro is like that now.

Touch Bar seemed gimmicky until I saw the on-stage demo. Photoshop without having to dive in the menus and changing brush size while simultaneously drawing with the trackpad... Could make a huge difference in your workflow!

Thunderbolt 3 requires adapters, but has a lot of advantages. You can even charge from an external battery now. MagSafe can be replaced by a third party solution although it's sad to loose the functionality by default, but not having a Apple-only port for charging should be a good thing. Replacing the cable costs so much less. Have you seen how small the power brick is?

I've learned to love my 12" MacBook after using my 15" MBP for two years. Loved it more than I thought beforehand.

I'm still in doubt over what to buy next, but the 15" Pro remains the ultimate option. It's expensive, yes. But I recall the 2nd and 3rd model in the previous 15" lineup to be even more expensive? Maybe it should've come with 512GB standard, nobody would've complained.

I ordered a 15" MBP with the Radeon Pro 460.

When people are comparing specs, it's a little silly. Right now we know very little about the real world performance of these chips because they are as-of-yet exclusive to the MacBook Pro (someone correct me if I'm wrong? That's my understanding).

And, they are pro GPU's, not the same as the gaming-focused ones. AMD used to call this their "FireGL" line, now they call it "Radeon Pro". It's not Apples to Apples. And Kudos to Apple for going that direction. A GPU that sacrifices performance in gaming in order to boost performance in applications like Maya, Final Cut Pro X, Photoshop (yes; working with high resolution images and doing more complex stuff with it does actually demand a decent GPU; ever run high end photo editing software on high resolution images with an integrated GPU? It works, but not well and not smooth...)

Simply put; they work, they are super reliable, and they are fast. It's a decade old argument "I can get the same PC for less". Usually conveniently ignoring a thing or two (can you buy another laptop with that great of a display? Yes! For less money? Actually, no... The SurfaceBook can give the MBP a serious run for it's money. But.. for about the same amount of money!!)

Anyway, not to beat those dead horses but... I'm happy with it.

If it were up to me? I'd have included a USB-A connector as well for legacy stuff. But that's not Apple's style. Anyone here remember the G3 iMac? Some of the PowerMac's that followed? No floppy drive? No legacy connectors? No ADB, no Parallel, no Serial. Of COURSE USB was superior in every way but they didn't even INCLUDE the old stuff. Plenty of folks bought iMacs, AND an external floppy drive for their stacks of floppy disks, AND expensive Parallel/serial converters (or new peripherals) because USB was still a brand new standard. Sure, USB sticks were on the horizon.

And I know this sounds crazy now, but LOTS of people thought Apple was premature on dropping the floppy drive. A couple companies made USB flash drives but they ran $50+ for a mere 8MB. For a few bucks you could get a 10 pack of 1.44mb floppies; which provided essentially more data for a fraction of the price; AND they were cheap enough to put data on and pass to others. In a world where the internet was in it's infancy and even networking in offices wasn't always extremely common; it was CRAZY that there was a computer that was difficult or expensive to store files on externally. Of COURSE looking back, Apple was prepared for the very near future when all of that shifted seemingly overnight (helped in no small way BY Apple). Is USB-C the next "iMac" moment, ditching all of the old standards for what is the clear path of the future? Maybe. But it's literally not something we can know today; so we're all just guessing. And Apple has a pretty strong record of getting it right.

I cancelled my first order today because I decided I wanted Space Gray instead of Silver and my shipping slipped from 2-3 weeks to 3-4 weeks.

I did exactly the same lol

My first order went in on launch day, and I cancelled it the following day. Today ordered again and have same estimated shipping as you.
Hopefully it will come sooner :)

Maybe they will make a higher wattage version now theres a new 15" MBP which uses USB-C for charging.

I think it looks pretty good, and will consider buying an 85W version if it becomes available.

Welp, despite previous doubts I just placed an order for the base 15" Touch Bar model with upgraded 460 graphics. Delivery should take another 3-4 weeks, so plenty of time to cancel should I learn anything new about either performance or better options.

Really thought I would be more excited, but what can you do.

Apparently there are a lot of people who love the new MacBook Pro. I cancelled my first order today because I decided I wanted Space Gray instead of Silver and my shipping slipped from 2-3 weeks to 3-4 weeks. Some of the 13" models are already at 4-5 weeks. I think there are a lot of us that love the new MacBook that just aren't on the forum or responding here. I'm very excited about getting mine and hate the wait.

I ordered Silver mainly because its old school. All the prior Macs I've owned have been either silver or glossy white, so to me silver feels more like the color of apple computers. I can imagine 10 years from now Apple will still be making silver computers. The space grey looks distinguished, but does not feel like a classic mac computer to me, and as trends evolve, I am not sure it (or gold or rose gold) will be around in 10 years time. I do miss the glowing apple. It was one of those things that served no purpose other than to announce that great planning went into the design of this machine.

Definitely ordering one. Would be perfectly happy with the base model, but I want 4 ports. Once I go up to the higher end 13 it gets within a few $100 of the 15. Slippery slope.

I need to swing by the apple store and see them in person to make my decision.
