It's clearly not working that way in the current environment. The environment can be changed to encourage it.
That’s because parents just hand, their kid a tablet and walk away. They don’t want to spend the time. Maybe this is the future where AI becomes our parents. It watches us when we get online and does what parents should do keeping us safe. I’m not totally against that but it’s sad in a sense.

It's interaction mediated by Facebook to optimize Facebook's bottom line. Facebook is not a neutral medium. Should your children's interactions be mediated by a for profit corporation that can and will manipulate them for a penny? In any case, if the alternative is for these teens to meet in the park under the sun to interact, then I have no problem banning Facebook for teens.
Wait, you want young people to like physically talk to each other in person? I don’t think they know how to do this. I agree Facebook is not the greatest influence.

I disagree. Social media is tailored individually to each person to maximize engagement. MacRumors, at worst, can be clickbaity, but everyone on the site sees the exact same thing. There is a shared truth to it. On social media, everyone sees something different tailored to them. Unfortunately, it turns out that two of the best ways to maximize engagement are to anger and polarize people or to sedate them with endless videos. Or both at the same time.
Oh yeah, it’s meant to maximize engagement by providing you with the content you enjoy. If it knows you like puppies, it’s going to keep showing you articles about puppies. There’s nothing sinister about that. It’s similar how Spotify creates the music you like so you will keep listening.

We are talking about the evils of tech companies. It would be strictly to reflect back at the user.
At least you hope that’s what would happen. I kind of trust Apple, but not the rest of them.

I too miss Steve and his presentation style but I’m also pretty happy with how Apple has flourished and stayed at the the vanguard of tech under Tim.
Tim aiint tech, he is a figure head, which is good for today
since as you mentioned everything is already developed.

of course was never publicly announced, but it was known it was being worked on, catch up about it here
Well, I knew it was rumored, but you can’t count something as a failure if it wasn’t even announced. A failure would be like that stupid charging mat Apple announced and never released. Sometimes companies start internal projects knowing that there is little chance anything will happen. So many things never make it out of the development phase.

There is a way to combat this if one is willing to do the work. I go out of my way to keep anything or anyone from learning about my needs/desires. For example, when I’m done browsing with Safari or Firefox, all data/history/cookies/etc is wiped. I avoid anything with “Trending”, “Viral”, or “Popular” in the title/link and I put no value in “Likes” or “Thumb up”.

People fall for so many scams these days because they don’t understand how and why surveillance is done.

sure with small gadgets and devices, but the Apple Car project was not some minor thing like a charging mat. its failure is significant. had huge potential for Apple long term

I just miss having a product obsessed "editor" as CEO

All the things he said "no" to (ideas and products) that we never knew about were likely some of the most valuable moves he made.

It's a really valuable talent to know what things should and shouldn't be pursued and what offerings should look like.

OK, but what is your concern about having your content catered to your likes? For example, I can use YouTube and incognito mode where I just get the most popular videos, but that would be terrible because I don’t like most of those. I watch it in my account so it knows what I like and what I watch so it caters those videos to me. I guess if I had problems with addiction, then I can say that, but for just enjoying the content having it adjusted to what you like seems better.

Again, I don’t think any of us have enough information to call this a failure. Unless you are some insider at Apple, you don’t know what happened. Tim Cook could’ve said let’s see if this is even possible. They played around with it and decided it’s not possible. I wouldn’t call that a failure. You can’t call everything that goes into R&D and doesn’t make it to a consumer device a failure. I’m sure Apple has dozens of “failures” like this that we don’t know about. The Apple car was hyped up by leakers, and that was literally it. There was no Apple car.

they had been working on it for over a decade with $10 billion spent on it and thousands of employees.
that is a substantial effort not comparable to prototype handheld devices that never make it.

meanwhile Siri and Apple Intelligence have been useless and bad. iOS and iPadOS with no major improvements in recent years. all that effort could have went into these areas instead. the M4 iPad Pro is a hilarious example, that chip is completely useless in that device. it runs the same software as the $300 iPad

I agree they could’ve spent money in places that needed it more than some stupid car project. Apple wastes a lot of money on stupid things.

Siri has been terrible from day one. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard Apple say oh we’re going to really work on it this time. It’s terrible and it’s always going to be terrible.

I hate to tell you, but the Mac Studio runs the same software as the base model Mac mini. It just does things faster. Why would the high end iPad run different software? The iPhone 16 Pro Max runs the same software as the iPhone 16e

because the iPad is marketed as being capable of more. and it has a Mac chip inside. Mac software isn't limiting like iPadOS. you can't even play 2 audio sources at once on iPad. the 13" iPad Pro costs $1300 (nearly $1700 with the Magic keyboard) vs the M4 MacBook air 13" costs $999. yet the iPad is crippled by software despite the same M4 chip. why is the M4 chip in the iPad if it's not capable of doing the same tasks as the M4 Mac.

this confusion in the iPad Pro line is terrible.

Did you know Ford puts the same 5.0 engine in their Mustang as their F150? The Mustang has a towing capacity of 1000 pounds versus over 10,000 pounds for the Ford F150. That’s completely ridiculous since they have the same engine. Just because something has the same processor doesn’t mean they are meant to do the same things. I’m not saying the iPad can’t be better but a direct comparison to the M4 Mac just because the chip has the same designation is silly. It’s an iPad not a Mac just like the Mustang is a Mustang not an F150. They may have the same power plant but the design is different.

Think about the M4 Chip inside of a Mac mini with a cooling fan versus that same chip in a MacBook Air versus the same chip in an iPad. Yes they all have the same M4 name, but they’re not going to perform the same.

If Apple unleashed the M4 inside the iPad Pro and said hey, you can run macOS or Linux or whatever you want on it people would be angry that it was overheating. It’s an iPad and that’s all it’s ever going to be. The limitation is the form factor.

I miss Steve Jobs.
I'm tired of Apple releasing half-baked beta versions.
I'm tired of Apple trying, like Google and Samsung, to attract customers with unnecessary features like background removal from photos.
I'm tired of Tim Cook announcing things just days before any official release.
Where's the old, good Apple?
There are things I miss about the Steve Jobs era too. But whenever I see or hear laments about the “good old days”, I always remember these lines from “I’ve got a little list” from Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado enumerating Koko’s list of those who ought to be executed:

“Then the idiot who praises, with enthusiastic tone
All centuries but this, and every country but his own”…

And as someone who has used computers regularly since 1968, IMHO Apple computers have never been better. YMMV

There must be something in the air. I was thinking the exact same thing for the last 10 days. it has nearly dominated my thoughts for all of those ten days. I have been Apple exclusive since I enter the world of modern technology with The Apple Powerbook 4. I don’t like Apples presentations anymore. I don’t like Apple following Samsung, Google or Bill Gates worthless features.

Siri was first integrated into the iPhone 4S. I didn’t really use it much until I bought my iPhone 5 and I began to use it so much that I rarely used the on-screen keyboard anymore. However, for the past few years Siri has gone down the toilet with words strung together, punctuation where it shouldn’t be and typos galore. I remember, on my iPhone 12, I stopped using Siri and went back to the keyboard because I was having to correct Siri so much that it was no longer useful. Siri was the only Apple product that left me thinking “so, Apple acquired Siri.. and ruined it”.

Tim Cook could defecate in a shoebox, slap an Apple logo on it, and if it generates record profits, there will still be many Apple fans who defend Cook by using the rationale that because Apple is one of the most profitable companies in history, it means the iFeces is an excellent product.

I certainly have some similar feelings, but I think Tim's attestation that "his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple" has by and large been honoured.
Exactly. Everything Apple is now would not have happened without Steve's vision. It's easy to dismiss his contributions because it was so long ago, and as the saying goes, "out of sight out of mind".

Steve is very much a different person from Tim. If you've read about him and his idiosyncrasies you can see how Steve pushed Apple to be the best it could be.

I personally think Apple would be farther along (to put it loosely) if Steve was still running the show, but we can't deny that despite his absence, Apple is doing well regardless.

I'm not afraid to agree with the OP and share their sentiments.

Absolutely, Tim is not the cause to Apple's success after Steve's death.
But we will never know exactly how Apple would've been if Steve would've been alive.
Personally, I think we could've seen even more amazing products, and a bigger success - and they had definitely looked better too, as Ive still had been on Apple with his skills and eyes for form.

Without them both now, Apple is soul-less and quite boring.
It's 90% MacOS that keeps me still buying some Apple products though.

I think what you’re describing is the dictation function or speech to text rather than Siri. I agree with you that it along with Siri is worse now. I think in a recent update it got worse. I still use it a lot, but I try to be careful with catching things it does. Sometimes I don’t and I’m sure there’s some weird posts here that had people thinking what is this guy saying. Sometimes I’m in a hurry and don’t look it over well.

Now that you mention it, I think you’re right, I could be confusing Siri with the dictation function.

I'm on the other side. I couldn't stand Jobs and stayed away from Apple products because of him.
What about Steve didn’t you like? I heard he was quirky and sometimes a little arrogant.

I’m not a big fan of Tim Cook as a person but Apple makes really great products now and the service is good so I buy them. I can’t be like well Apple products are awesome but the CEO is terrible so I’m not going to buy an iPhone. That’s only my philosophy though and I’m not being critical of those who are different.

He is running the company so how could he not be the cause of the success? He’s the one making the major decisions that have been pushing sales upward. I don’t necessarily like the guy as a person, but he seems to be doing great at running Apple.
