I'm merely writing this thread.. wondering if there is anyone out there like me.

Dude. Literally like half of MacRumors is just like you, so settle down. This rant gets old. You're probably not even the first person to post this same rant just for today.

If a 2011 MBA is stilll working great for you, why are you even considering the newer models? I have a 2018 MBP, but if I could do my work acceptably on a 2011 MBA, I would.

That means you never had an issue with MacBooks from 2015 and older (except the 2017 MBA)...That are not the „latest MacBooks“. Apple had these problems since then for the last 3 generations. That is definitely too long!
Oh sorry, what I meant was I never had any issues with my latest Macbook, (MBA 2017)

I've been using a 12" Retina Macbook for years now.
I love the form factor,I wanted a Mac as light and as portable as possible and it really feels like an iPad.
that being said I've has issues with keyboard from day one and it only gets worse.

the keyboard problem IS REAL.

not only it's really unpleasant to type on (even iPad smart keyboard is much better typing experience),but keys keep sticking in randomly.it really is a flawed design and it's really disappointing to see Apple refused to address this issue.

the original Macbook Air was one if not the best laptop computer in the world.
the new Air is NOTHING even close.

I know many people who have been Macbook users for decades, and are now switching to Windows laptops just becaue the keyboard problem.you just go and try the old Macbook Air/Pro keyboard again, or new Windows laptops like Surface Laptop ,Huawei laptops keybaord and instantly feel how amazing and completely superior they feels vs this horrible, butterfly failure.

I'm one who is being forced to switch, it's really bad.

.. and to think.. somebody on here told me that I'm the problem, not Apple.

The new MacBook (2018) really has some issues so I decided to stick to my 2017 MBA, but Windows Laptop? Nah. We used to use Windows at work before we switch everything to MacBooks, and let me say we’re not going back lol Apple just had that fluidity and ease on their products.

I've been using macs for about 7 years since 2012, nowhere near enough like some of you old timers have. Like many people I got into macs b/c of the iphone and the 2012 rmbp 15" was a laptop in its own league at that time. There was no competition in 2012. 7 years later, I bought a 2018 mbp 15" based on the good experience I've had w/ macos and the tight software integration w/ my iphone.

I haven't had any keyboard issues on my mbp yet (*knock on wood) but if I ever do, I will hold off on buying a mba which is on my to-do list. The wedge shaped design is just one of a kind and I just gotta own one. But if the thing is unreliable then I'm not interested in a broken machine.

That’s not for you to determine. I found the input in this thread valuable. I like checking in for an update on this issue. If it’s not a topic one cares to read anymore about that person doesn’t have to read the thread.
What did you wind up buying instead of an MBA? Maybe I can help you find a forum for it?

I wanted a new Mac, especially since I was using an old rMBP with a broken screen as a 'desktop'. I got it dirt cheap and had to replace the heat pipe, but after that it didn't overheat and functioned nicely as a Mac mini. But I decided to get a fully functional Mac laptop.

The Macbook with its single port was a no go, and the MacBook Pro 13" seemed like a little too much money and power for my decidedly casual use. So I settled on the Air, but I kept hearing about failing butterfly keyboards. I started looking at the older MBA, and decided to get one once I realized that the SSD was upgradeable.

I then found a deal on one on Amazon. For some reason the i7 model (with 128GB SSD) was only $0.99 more than the i5 model, so I snapped it up. Once I had it, I bought the appropriate adapter and upgraded the internal SSD and saved myself a few hundred dollars.

Though I bought this as a 'casual' laptop for use around the house and coffee shops, it is surprisingly capable. The thing can even run Davinci Resolve with decent export times. In Boot Camp, it can even run some older games like Skyrim. So color me happy.

My 2017 MBP's keyboard is so terrible I've been using it every day for over a year without any problems. More educated Macrumors members tell me it is completely unusable. I mean like, I can't even type right now because it is so bad. This is a complete and utter failure for Apple according to Macrumors. They're doomed for sure now.

My wife's 2017 MBP - she uses every day for her PhD studies - writing 10 page papers left and write (intended). She can't even use her keyboard either, according to Macrumors. Like totally unusable. She types on it every day for hours and hours and hours and actually says she likes the keyboard. What a liar (according to Macrumors). We know other people at the college where my wife studies with 2016, 2017, and 2018 MBPs who have similar experiences (we actually don't know anyone who has a keyboard problem, but many who do not).

What an absolute failure. I REFUSE to use any MBP because it's just completely unusable because Macrumors says so.

I'm not cool, educated, and informed if I don't join the Apple is doomed, keyboards are useless crowd! So I've changed to adapt.

In all seriousness.... Best of luck finding something you like. The older (and fatter) I get, the harder it is to find something I like.

I debated what to get my wife for Mothers Day: iPad Pro w/ keyboard, MB 12 or 11" MB Air. In the end I picked up a 2014 11" MB Air 4/128 from Back Market for $300. You just can't beat the bang for buck in this small of a package. The big draw over the others is multiple user accounts (iPad doesn't support), 'classic' keyboard and price. I worried about 4Gig vs. 8Gig but it runs Mojave just fine with memory pressure readings staying in green at all times.

I have to agree. I would love to buy a new MBP, but the keyboard issues kill it for me. I can't deal with the chance of keyboard failure when I am on trips. If it happens at a bad time I am totally screwed. Looking at buying a Windows alternative now.

Which issue are you concerned about? Sticky keys? There's an app which addresses double letters.

I understand your concern, but honestly it's not worth leaving macOS for me.

Sticky keys are an issue, but not the main issue. I am worried about outright key failure which would render the machine useless for a time. I should not need a program to fix an inherent hardware flaw on Apple's part. Should not have to be an issue. Apple made laptops for decades without these issues.

macOS is one of the reasons I would consider a MBP, but sadly I have also become discontent with the OS since Lion and especially since High Sierra. Luckily most of my apps are on Windows or have Windows equivalents that are just as good. It's not the Vista days anymore. Sucks to leave, I have been using Mac laptops since the PBG4 days, but they are all tools in the end and I will go with the tool that functions more reliably.

Whilst my 2017 Macbook 12" has so far been fine and i love the little machine, you only have to look at how quickly the new Macbook Air's showed up in the refurb store on apple.com (which i browse almost daily) it was very quick, and it is flooded with them. That tells me it has a very high return rate. I do hope they fix this keyboard problem this year, i would love a new Air, i love the new space grey finish. I would love a newer 15" Pro with the touch bar, but i cannot risk over £2000 on a Pro to have it fail like i can with my little 12" which was £1059 from the refurb store.

My 2012 13" Macbook Air and 2013 15" Pro have been the best laptops i have ever owned, never missed a beat, and real work horses, i want this from 2019 Macbooks and should be expected from premium end notebooks which were once the best on the market.

I actually like the new keyboard, but I don't like that they break. Big difference. The old keyboard was impeccable, so why change it? Basically my point.

Agreed. No idea why they changed it. I liked the old keyboard better. My MBA 2015 was my most favorite laptop of all time. I used that thing for 10 hours a day for 3 years. My MBP 2017 is working, hasn't given me any problems, keyboard continues to be stellar but I'd be lying if I said I liked the keyboard better than my MBA 2015.

These threads where people act like these keyboards are unusable bother me. I know 5 MBP owners and 1 MBA owner (with new keyboard) that have owned their laptop for years and have had 0 problems. My wife and I with our 2017 MBPs have had 0 problems for over a year now. Not invalidating user's experiences but you'd think if this keyboard was so problematic, something would have happened by now. I'm glad Apple is standing behind their product with a 4 year keyboard warranty.

Macrumors seems to become more and more ComplaintRumors. "I know 300,000 people who all had their keyboard die, and mine died 493 times!" You'd think if these keyboards were such failures, my wife would know at least ONE PERSON at university (many of whom have these keyboards) with this problem. Again, not invalidating, but this seems to be the popular thing to do now at Macrumors.

Remember, MBPs are a joke now! Keyboard is completely unusable! Apple is totally doomed and it is ALL Tim Cook's fault. <sigh>

Meanwhile, my work provided 2018 XPS 15 has basically guaranteed I'm staying Mac for a long... long time. But hey, diversity and difference is a good thing. If anything this will be a kick in the seat of Apple's pants to do better.

This is like arguing that since you didn't get sick from food tainted with salmonella that all the uproar from those that did isn't justified. At best, you're just rubbing it in that you got lucky and they didn't. Like, what is the point of such a bitter and sarcastic post? The butterfly KB is a failure. Period. Just bc 100% of machines haven't been affected does not mean Apple is not responsible for a colossal ****up that they still have not properly addressed after 3 years.

You and I have very different views on this. If it was such a colossal ****up as you claim, people wouldn't continue to buy millions of these. And I'm not the only one "lucky" - I don't know a single person who has this problem in real life - neither does my wife at university. As I said, I'm not invalidating, it just seems to me if it was even a tiny bit of a colossal ****up, it would happen to more than just Macrumors users.

Sign me up for the crowd that would be happy if they went back to the 2015 keyboard tho. I do like that one better. Also think it is unreasonable to think that Apple would ever do such a thing.

"It turns out there was a problem, and is worth discussing. And, it is one worthy of a repair program. But, it is not an "epic fail" or any other declaratives that we've seen lately. Headlines like "The new MacBook Pro keyboard is ruining my life" remain hyperbole out of proportion to the actual issue."

"Overall, the total number of service calls is lower for both the 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro, versus the older models, even including the keyboard failures."
