dude ... it sucks to be you.

Don't hold a 600 dollar phone with your shoulder... Not less than a week after you've had it.

But yea. that sucks. I'm sure you'll be able to replace it for cheaper ~200/250 eventually.

Not to state the obvious here, or anything, but why would anyone risk holding their $1000+ phone between their chin, and shoulder.

Whether it be for 3 seconds, or 25 minutes, that's just, insane.

Apple will probably just say 'You dropped it on purpose, so here is the bill to get it replaced ...'

R-Fly

It was 2 seconds and I was busy and didn't realize what i was doing and made a mistake. It's not like i took the time to realize what could happen. PEOPLE MAKE MISTAKES. and thats what happened to me and in no way did I drop it on purpose:mad:

Been there, done that. It happens everyday...

they do, just not for the iphone.

I don’t get it. What logical reason could AT&T have to insure EVERY OTHER phone they sell but not the iphone that’s ridiculous! There are HTC and Blackberry phone that cost just as much as the iphone and they can be insured, why not the iphone?

The phone is really quite easy to disassemble now, unlike the 1st Gen iPhone.
I would get a replacement screen and give it a go.

Unless something has changed... They didn't insure Blackberries several years ago and they didn't insure the Treo 750 I purchased in Feb 07. The rep I used, wirefly, however did through a third party.

Anyway, AT&T as a rule hasn't offered insurance on any of their expensive devices in years. This is not an iPhone issue.

I currently have the blackberry curve (ordered my iphone monday) and so does my fiance. AT&T doesn't offer insurance on them either. Only the really cheap phones.

Don't worry about it stuff like this happens all the time. My fiance drop his blackberry last year a month after we bought them and broke the screen. He had to buy a new one at full price. It was an honest mistake. Just take it to apple and see what they can do for you.

oh the horror. Im not worrying to much about this because my nabor works pretty high up in apple and me one nabor brought her broken/cracked ipods and she got us new ones for free.

I feel your pain... I've shattered my old iPhone before.

There's always people buying them on eBay (for parts or for repair) so worse comes to worse, know that you can make some money off of it.

Insurance is available through http://www.squaretrade.com. In order to protect against this type of damage you would have to add the accidental loss and damage coverage to the policy. They offer a three year policy with accidental loss and damage for around $125 for the three years paid up front. If you input the promo code summer08 you will get 30% off which reduces the price to $88 for the three years. You can cancel at any time and will receive a prorated refund. Also note when you insure the phone you should do so for the unsubsidized replacement cost (which I verified with a rep is allowable). In other words a 8GB is worth $399 for insurance purposes and $499 for the 16GB. The rep told me that the usually pay replacment cost on iPhones rather then fixing them on the insurance policy. I signed up for a policy yesterday.

I just called State Farm, and their insurance covers all your items from loss, accidental damage, theft, etc, and it's super cheap!! Check that out before you use square trade. You can protect all of your stuff for a lot cheaper!

Oh ok, I see. I guess I've been on Sprint/Nextel to long. I've had insurance on all my phones, 2 blackberries, 2 HTC Moguls, and a 700w Treo. I dont think I could manage without knowing all my families phones are covered. That might just be a deal breaker for me. I can live without the insurance on my phone (I'm the only one getting the iphone) but if they dont cover Blackberries, Treos and the like that could be pretty expensive for me in the long run. Not to mention AT&T's plans suck! Maybe I'll just ditch the family and leave them all on Sprint while I go to AT&T, so daddy can get his new toy! lol

I'm very sorry to hear that. Did you use an Amex card to purchase it? They cover against accidental damage and theft for 90 days, and they double the warranty to two years.

Honestly, and you probably don't want to hear it, I don't think Apple or AT&T is going to help you without charging at least 200 bucks... but I'm very sorry.

Wow that sucks. Maybe your credit card company will cover it. Is it just me or does the first gen iphone seem more durable?

Ugh, that's like a crime scene photo or something. It hurts to look.

I cracked the screen on my original iPhone and Apple wanted $250 (like pp mentioned) to replace it with a refurb. Of course, that is more than the price of the 8gig this time around, so it probably depends on your model, etc what they would charge.

I KNOW that the phones look nice uncased, but after I cracked mine, I am a case girl all the way! They have some cute ones. Some lessons are learned harder.

Just Got Back....

Just got back from apple store. 300 F***in dollars!!!! Same price I paid. The guy said that is a discount since a new one cost 599. I AM SO PISSED RIGHT NOW. I couldnt even use my cracked one cause the screen was non responsive. So i had to pay it

i'd rather pay the 300 dollars than pay 500, or 600 or not even being able to get it replaced...

i am glad we can even get a new iphone because we had to resign our contracts like that...

I do believe the orig iphone is bit more durable which is sad to say =/

but just baby your 3G and u should be fine ! :]

Ouch, now this wont help now or answer your first question of how much i will cost to fix, but when you get a new one I would go with squaretrade as well. There is a coupon that you can use to save 30% and I got 3 years of ACCIDENTAL damage for only 83.00. A deal as far as I am concerned and I wont have to risk the "rate increase" from my homeowners when and if my suffers the same fate.

I definitely feel for you man. I get upset when i leave a little scratch on my phone. (crosses fingers) the only few times I have dropped my phone was when it was in its case, which breaks the fall. Just goes to show, "Handle with Extreme Care!"

As I luckily didn't find out the hard way two days ago, BUY A CASE FOR YOUR IPHONE. I say this not to mock you but to warn everybody. Mine took a 4-foot tumble onto asphalt and the only damage is to my $35 case. I'm not sure, but I think the case protected my screen from scratches by being slightly elevated on the front (it rises up above it, which is physically necessary on any case).

I let mine go naked (case-less) for long time, and just around re-sell time, July-ish, I dropped it in the ladies restroom. It was in my jacket that I removed and forgot about until it tumbled to the tile to my horror. NOW I have a case on it at all times.

I still do not think there's a sufficient screen cover while in use, which of course with the touch-sensitive screen would make it unusable. Maybe there'll be a technology like a lens cover on expensive cameras that'll protect it while making it usable.

Im truly sorry this happened to you! :(

I would be freaking out if that happened to me. I would be screaming, p***** off, cursing, I would not know what to do.

I hope you get a new one. Best of luck!

Use Amex

It's too late now, but if you use any Amex membership rewards card (Green, Gold, Platinum, Black, and I think Blue), they'll insure it against everything (loss, stolen, shattered) for at least 90 days. Longer on the Platinum card.

:(

Ugh, that sucks. I'm really sorry.

I dropped my day-old phone on Saturday (less than 24 hours old) because I was trying to carry too much stuff at once, and was so relieved it didn't sustain any damage because I'd heard of this happening. I think I'm going to look into that square trade insurance now.

Did they give you a new phone? or replace the screen? If they gave you a new phone, did you get to keep the cracked one?

I am wondering where the $125 comes from. This is from the Square Trade blog -- "On the $299 16 gig iPhone, you can expect to pay about $35.99 for 3 years of basic coverage that'll cover you if the phone stops working on its own -- and tack on another $39 to guard against any drops, spills, and slips you might have."

I am interested in this but wonder about the price discrepancy...
