I shattered my iphone 3g screen

I currently have the blackberry curve (ordered my iphone monday) and so does my fiance. AT&T doesn't offer insurance on them either. Only the really cheap phones.

Don't worry about it stuff like this happens all the time. My fiance drop his blackberry last year a month after we bought them and broke the screen. He had to buy a new one at full price. It was an honest mistake. Just take it to apple and see what they can do for you.

att is some crap.My wife had a blackberry curve from verizon insured, palm treo sprint insured, and samsung instinct insured.Thats at&t way of making money. When this happens to me instead of buying a new phone i will pay to cancel my contract and go to a company that insures there phones.

I am wondering where the $125 comes from. This is from the Square Trade blog -- "On the $299 16 gig iPhone, you can expect to pay about $35.99 for 3 years of basic coverage that'll cover you if the phone stops working on its own -- and tack on another $39 to guard against any drops, spills, and slips you might have."

I am interested in this but wonder about the price discrepancy...

I think they priced the policy using the $299 pricing. Problem with that is that the replacement cost of the phone is higher than that. My AT&T reciept shows that I received a $200 discount on the phone so I insured mine for $499 which was why the pricing was higher. There is a Squaretrade thread going on at https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=5857596&posted=1#post5857596. On this thread someone mentioned that you should actually insure it for $699 becuase that will be the "no commitment" pricing for the 16GB iphone and that will be the true replacement cost. I'm going to look into this and increase my coverage if warranted. The only possible issue with insuring it for that value may be that I don't have a reciept to back that cost up.

UPDATE: It seems Squaretrade has updated their blog to indicate that you should insure the iPhone for $399/$499 and have updated their pricing chart to reflect the $125 for three years with accidental damage coverage.

First off, sorry about your new phone being smashed... that sucks...
I think this is good advertising for a simple rubber case...

Dropped mine on concrete and it had enough soft layer protection there was no damage at all, hit on the corner....

Shiny and sexy is great until this happens... :(

I got a new one but payed 299. I didnt get a whole new box or anything just the phone. Apparently if i tried to buy a new one it would be 499.

Right after i bought a case and purchased a 3 year warranty through squaretrade.com for 50 bucks which covers a cracked screen. Seems like a good deal

How did you get one for $50? I thought it was around $125, although I did see where you could get the 30% off that. Can you buy the accidental damage coverage separately?

They only insure the subsidized price or what u paid on your recipt so 3 years of the 300 insurance plus accidential damage and my 30 off coupon came to 52.00

Thanks for the info. :) Don't know if this will help, but I saw on the SquareTrade thread where people were able to insure them for the replacement cost instead of the purchase price because of the subsidy. Not sure about it, since I haven't actually bought the coverage yet, but it might be worth a phone call. Could possibly save you the extra $200 or so if something happens before you are eligible for an upgrade.

Something tells me further clarification is needed from Squaresoft or whomever.

Right now I see the real possibility of people making claims on totaled phones and finding out they do not have enough money to actually get a new phone without coming out of pocket a few hundred dollars.

Which means with the cost of insurance as well, it is not even worth doing.

What does their contract say they will do if you file a claim? Say you drop it and it shatters into 10254 pieces. Will they actually replace the phone for you (good), or pay you the amount of money you paid for the phone originally (bad). Or will they actually provide you the money to buy a new phone at the current price to replace it? (Good).

With the way they are tying it to the purchase prices and having lower rates for lower prices, it seems they are doing the middle one, and I would not want that coverage.

If I break my 16 gig phone in 6 months, them giving me $300 may not do me a lot of good. I understand the OP got away with it and got his screen replaced for that, but there is no guarantee that Apple will do that for every replacement. So if this happens and Apple says I need $600 to buy a new phone, and the insurance only gives me $300.00 it is only of little value.

I got a very interesting phone call from my apple store today which replaced my phone. a day after I got an email asking to fill out a survey about my experience at the genious bar. I said they were very helpful but thought 300 was too much to replace the phone with the broken screen which was exactly how much i payed for the phone 5 days before. so i get a call today and the guy says come in tommorow and we'll see what we can do for you. So i'm going in tommorow

Genous bar replaced one of ours last night at no charge. Very cool, the cracked screen was our fault.

I didn't read through the whole thread before posting (I am in a bit of a hurry), so excuse me if someone already posted this tid bit of hope.

ifixit.com (I believe) did a breakdown of the components of the new iPhone (actually took it apart). One of the nice things they noted was that the glass and LCD were separate components this time (previously were glued together). A ray of hope might exist if you only cracked the glass (as glass is a lot cheaper than the LCD component); in fact, the old iPhone "glass" could even be ghetto replaced with a thin plastic sheet and work okay.

If you just cracked the glass, the repair cost might not be as substantial, bust as someone said, I would check ifixit.com if Apple gives you a high #.

squaretrade has a very bad reputation for trying to weasle out of paying up. just google their name.

but i guess if the plan is for "accidental damage" and not "extended warranty" then there wouldn't be as many "loopholes" for squaretrade to get out of.

If anyone is curious, if you *just* crack/shatter your screen, Apple will NOT replace the screen, like a repair, they will only replace the phone (ask me how I know ;) ), but there are sites where you can buy screen replacements or send to get it replaced. Not sure the reliability of those, though.

i'm here because mine just shattered. i'm thinking the plastic back is not near as tough. i'm devastated.

1. apple store tomorrow
2. credit card coverage?
3. homeowner's coverage
4. replace screen myself

so, if 1-3 don't work, and ifixit posts a guide (doesn't look like it yet). where does one purchase new glass?

As I luckily didn't find out the hard way two days ago, BUY A CASE FOR YOUR IPHONE. I say this not to mock you but to warn everybody. Mine took a 4-foot tumble onto asphalt and the only damage is to my $35 case. I'm not sure, but I think the case protected my screen from scratches by being slightly elevated on the front (it rises up above it, which is physically necessary on any case).

I had my iPod Touch tumble to the cement floor at work face down one day when I had it on the table and started to walk away with the headphones still on. If not for the iSkin I had on it, it likely would have destroyed the screen.

Oh sorry forgot to post it. got called in said they were gonna give me my money back cause it was only 5 days. Word of advice if after a genious bar appointment they email you and ask for a survey always do it. i filled it out said they were very helpful but i thought that 300 was way too much to pay for a new screen after 5 days. Next day got a cal from a manager asking me to come in. turns out all of those comment cards get sent to the manager of that store to read. Great Customer Service!!!!:apple::apple::apple::apple:

Glad you got it settled, but when you had originally brought it in and paid $300 to get a new one, WHY would they have kept the old one? It was yours and paid for. They should have given it back to you so you could at lest sell it for parts on ebay or something...

That part didn't make sense to me.

I am having an experience that is very similar to yours up to filling out the survey, so I'm hoping (praying) I get that call from an Apple rep today. Last week I paid the 299 + tax for a 2nd iPhone after my 4 day old 3G cracked after dropping no more than 3 feet onto a hard surface. I got a survey request last night and promptly filled it out in a similar fashion - basically saying that I was treated very nicely and respectfully by the Genius Bar but I was very frustrated with the ease of which the iPhone cracked and the high replacement cost. So hopefully I'll get the same call soon...

The reason you have to give your old one back is that they are basically subsidizing the cost of your replacement. If you wanted to keep the broken one you could pay full retail price ($599) for a brand new one. The first time you pay $299 for the iPhone, AT&T is subsidizing the cost. So to keep the price the same, the second time you're subsidizing your own purchase by trading in your broken one.

I guess you could pay full $599 and then try to sell the broken one on Ebay for more than 300. I chose not to and just took the $299 replacement, but it would be interesting to see how much an iPhone with a cracked screen would go for.
