what id I bought it at best buy, will an apple store still replace it?
While your warranty is still valid, Apple can give you a warranty replacement, regardless of where you originally bought the product from (with some weird exceptions for 3G units purchased in other countries).

Note that a warranty replacement may be a refurbished unit, although this soon after the launch, that's not likely.

If you were asking this question six months after a launch, and you're the type of person that would absolutely flip out if there was a chance Apple's warranty process might give you a refurbished unit, your best bet would be to return your faulty unit for a refund (to wherever you originally bought it from) and then buy another new one.

I could care less if its refurbished as long as it works right! So what would I need for warranty....the receipt of when I bought it?

No, doesn't matter where you bought it, just take it in.

Honestly I have never even heard of that URL before...

These 'polls' are flawed from the start since only people with a problem are seeking them out. I have handled 6 iPad 2s since last Friday and ZERO had a problem with bleeding.
Are there some defective units? Absolutely, every manufactured product will have some issues.
60% of shipped units? No way.

Like I said:

"Given that there is no proof required that you even own an iPad 2 before pressing YES, NO, or DON'T KNOW, it's perhaps not the most accurate way of gauging the problem."

I'd never heard of the site until I'd Googled the OP's problem.

I think we can at least all agree that my back light bleed seems to be the most common production issue encountered by new owners so far?

I'll just stick to facts then. It was a fact that there was a rumor that apple was going to postpone the launch of the ipad 2 because of production issues. Its also a fact that it then launched much sooner than anticipated. Its also a fact that people are complaining of issues with their ipads that occurred somewhere in the production process. I will say no more :p

It is a fact that there are rumors posted here daily. Also it is a fact that there bad information posted here daily. Finally it is a fact that you can actually find decent answers to your questions/problems/opinions. However, trying to claim that a rumor or rumors that were posted here, doesn't make those rumors actual facts.

Try to bring it back to BB or live with it past the return policy at BB and go to the Apple store. You have a year to do this from the purchase date, and you also have that same year to buy AppleCare which will extend your year to two years.

It is a fact that if you don't do this you have no chance in fixing the problem, and it is fact that you will be miserable until you do return or fix it.

I know, i have until next Friday to start the process at best buy. I figured I would bitch about my defective $800 toy here until then.

1. Fact of a rumor is not evidence of proof.
2. It was launched sooner than anticipated because the prototype wasn't lost in a bar.
3. Considering there were rumors of its launch prior to January its debatable to say whether it was launched sooner than anticipated. People are just used to knowing ahead of time so this one just snuck up on everyone.
4. People always complain about something on their gadgets. For example:

A. Battery life on the 2G
B. The 2Gs wouldn't charge up to 100% for several months.
C. A yellow screen cast on the 3G and 3GS, when compared to the bluish cast on the 2G
D. Screen bleeding on several generations of iPhones.
E. Yellowish screens on the iPhone 4 when compared to previous iPhones.
F. Antenna issues on the iPhone 4.

You should wait until the rumored secret upgrade is done to fix the 60% of affected phones. I said rumor so you can count that as a fact.

Yes, it painstakingly pretty clear.

I don't have one of these defective iPads right now, but I promise I will go home tonight and will find one. I'm sure of it.

I did not look for this problem because I heard about, I heard about this problem because i saw it on mine. I have about 8 devices with led displays and this is the only one that has this PROBLEM. Maybe i'm the only one but the 6 pages of complaints in the other thread on this forum probably prove otherwise. "Probably" for you nitpickers.....I personally am calling this a production issue with the first batch of ipads.

My iPad 1 has a backlight bleeding issue, and I've had it since launch day.

However, I know that it is a FACT that when you deal with LED backlight, you will always have SOME backlight bleeding. Some more noticeable than others. Every iPhone I've owned has some backlight bleeding, and the one iPad I've owned had a little more than usual. I am expecting my iPad 2 to have a little as well.

Let's do some math. Say Apple sold 1 million iPad 2s on launch. Say 60% of them were defective. That's 600,000 units. There is NO way there is 600,000 defective units. Maybe, MAYBE, and this is a long shot, there are 20% defective at the extreme most. That is pushing it.

Bitch all you want... Hell I feel for you. As soon as you notice a flaw in something brand new that you paid a lot of money for, its going to bug the tar out of you.

Just know that everything you read from here, unless its post Keynote/Tear downs/or an actual Apple released statement, are rumors. Were the iPads having production issues? Who knows, but they did pump out a lot of them, and it is expected to have a normal failure rate of any electronic device. What Apple considers a normal failure rate is anyone's guess.

I know from the amount of threads and posts about the "backlight bleeding" issue, it is easy to assume that this a huge problem. Just know that there are far more people happy and not experiencing the issue than there are people with with the problem. Again making a claim that 60% are having the issue will be the reason you get backlash on this board. If it were that prevalent of an issue, there would be News agencies, not blogs, on top of the story.

I hope your right because i've been hearing a lot of people also saying that apple won't replace these because they think these bleeds are normal. I am not impressed with apple if their devices normally bleed as much as mine. I have a feelign best buy will be a dead end so it would be up to apple to make me a happy consumer.

I dont agree with the op numbers but one of mine has a small light bleed nothing major and my other one is bleed free'!

Posted this elsewhere but used my iPad 2 a lot since I got it on release day and after even knowing there was a bleeding problem I did not see my device as having the problem. AND I LOOKED FOR IT. It was not untill a App Store "Update all" and a stuck Apple Remote App upgrade caused me to shutdown the device. During that shutdown when the screen goes black but it still backlit, I noticed bleeding around the edges in a few spots.

So does my $800 device have the bleeding issue, yes. But at this point it seems to be in my "acceptable" range considering I did not even notice it for 4 days. I'll monitor it and decide what to do later.

I also noticed mine after a reboot. I know everyone speculates its the glue but could something be happening during the reboot process that causes this? Some sort of software error?

Fairly large number? You are probably judging this from the amount of posts in the thread. But have you stopped to think that maybe, just maybe, there are people who haven't heard of this, or they are just happy as they can be with their brand new iPad and didn't post on how great theirs is?

If apple really sold 600k - 1 million iPad2s during day one, 60% (360k - 600k) would have caused a media frenzy that would be reported on your local news and not forums at macrumors.com. (no offense arn and macrumors montiors)

yea but you also have to realize that 99% of the consumers are not geeks. so they wouldn't even notice something like light bleeding. hell i wouldn't know if i was on forum sites like this. regular consumers wouldn't notice the vast majority of the issues that we complain about on here. so... i dont think that there would be a media frenzy.

I believe that I read in one of those threads that they got theirs replaced.

Here is what is going to happen...

Some people will read that long thread and will ramp up their brightness to 100%, go into a dark closet and notice that there is some backlight bleeding. Coming out the closet they and using it at a normal brightness they will be unable to see the issue, but they know its there. And it just drives them bat crazy that they plucked down $$$ for what they consider and issue. They will go to the Apple store and most likely they will be told it isn't an issue. Also because of the frenzy that is happening now, the genius will have labeled them as "another one of those". They'll be less than polite and won't replace the iPad, unless of course the customer makes a huge scene.

They will then come back to macrumors and post about how apple won't replace the defective iPad. And because of the all of those posts, the people who actually had a defective unit and got a replacement and decided to come back to follow up on that thread. Their post will get buried, and no one is going to read all 237 pages of comments.

It doesn't matter where you bought it, you can always take it to the genius bar at the Apple Store. Just do that and get it swapped.

I've seen nothing to suggest this is a pandemic.

So only geeks can notice a backlight bleeding issue? They might not describe it in those terms but they definitely would notice something and be unhappy.

If the iPad2 had 600,000 bad units out there, there would be a media frenzy. Do you remember antennagate? There was a press conference by Apple to address it.

Disclaimer: I am not saying that there was an actual antenna problem. I was just pointing out that it caused a media frenzy.

I was hoping to use it for something Saturday, if apple does a swap for you will they do it same day or do they order a new one? If so, do you keep your old one while you wait?

Right now it would be an order. I posted earlier on another thread that I made an appointment Sunday evening to replace a cracked screen. They called back this morning and it just was replaced.
