I realise that, unfortunately they don't make one.

As said above if Apple just happened to launch a 8" then we'd get people on here saying they want a 6.5" as the 8" is just too big.

You can't please all the people all of the time.

Sometimes in a crowded public bus or train I wish the iPhone would be a bit bigger or the iPad a bit smaller. Something in between would be perfect for reading.
Go Apple Go; fill the gap ...

very bad idea. imo 10" is the best, any smaller than 9.7 id rather get a smartphone.

I watch A LOT of content on my iPad...with apps like Netflix, SlingPlayer, iTunes movies/TV, VLC Player for iPad, AVPlayerHD and many other video apps, I LOVE the fact that i have a beautiful 9.7" display to watch all that video...
I don't want a smaller display...IMO the near 10" display is the PERFECT size for portable digital media...

Kindle...

yes, but only in form of "Kindle App" ... the kindle itself can't play Angry Birds ;)

You should check out the nook color if you want something for reading and games that is in-between-sizes. It's half the price of the lowest end iPad and I think it can play Angry Birds now (android market).

I agree that 7"-8" is better for traveling, but it's worse at home. Frankly if I'm traveling lite, my phone is more than good enough.
An additional screen size would do little to improve my iOS experience, and it could serve to fragment the app store.

I think the best size for people who commute or travel frequently will be the size that packs easiest. There is no guarantee of WiFi everywhere so at least a cell network option they'll need. Tethering with a phone will work, assuming the phone works where you are. I can carry the 7" wide screen tablets in the thigh pocket of my painter's pants. Make it a 4:3 ratio and it'll be too wide. The 9" and 10" tablets fit in most brief cases, but it takes a relatively large purse to hold one. What'll slip into the outer pocket of your carry-on luggage can work, so long as it'll rest well on the pull-down tray on the airplane.

The other side to tablet size is battery size. The iPad and Android tablets at 10" or so have room for batteries that'll last 10 hours or so. The smaller 7" tablets usually claim 7 hours. Make a smaller iPad and you'll need to accept short life on a charge.

Having an 8" screen on the iPad would definitely make it more portable, however, I think the 9.7" screen on the current iPad is just the right size for me, at least for now.

After extensive use of my parents iPad 2 (superb device), I have simply concluded it is too big and heavy for my needs.
Besides size, it is also a too heavy to hold single handed for too long.

I have/use an iPod Touch 4G and is wonderful, but it is too small for some the apps I wan to use it for.

My ideal iPad-P (pocket)
8" screen (more or less)
7.7" +/- on the long side
5" +/- width (so I can easily grasp it with one hand)

1280x960 or 1280x800 resolution, depending on the device dimension.

All the abilities of iPad 2 (which will be old version by then)
768MB of RAM
plus compass,
high-megapixel back camera with flash.
miniSD slot

0.9 Lb max weight.

I expect shorter battery life (obviously), but if it can manage 2/3 the time compared to full size (10 inch) I will be happy.

Stop being such a pu**y, try fitness maybe then you can handle the weight. Maybe your a leprechaun.

Angry Birds is just one example: its the whole eco system where we buy in. No Kindle or nook fits in there perfectly. Since its proprietary its needs to come from Apple. That brings me back to square one: Go Apple Go, fill the gap.

Oh, and 1977 just called. It wants its pants back.
Hey thanks! I appreciate you joining this thread just to leave an insult. Thought nobody cared. :D For what it's worth, these are my pants from 1977. ;) The side pockets sure come in handy. Flap keeps sawdust out.

Perhaps a 6-inch iPod Touch with 1440 x 960 resolution would be worthwhile?

call me crazy but I want a 15" iPad for certain things for work. 13" would be ok.

Everyone knows 9.7" is better than 8" and a lot better than 5".......

The amount of spam mail I receive each day confirms this.... ;)

and seriously..

If 7 or 8" was indeed the ideal size for a tablet, Galaxy Tab, Rim's Playbook, HTC Folio would be selling far better than they have. The proof is in the pudding.

Hey don't be insulting my brotherhood ;) some of the little green fellows are incredibly butch.... even us faery kind :p

I honestly think tablets are dumb. (this is coming from someone who's owned an iPad 2)

I just want the biggest phone I can pocket in normal jean pants. (I think it's something like 6-inches. Whatever the Dell Venue is)

Edit: wow MacAgnostic, that was beautiful!

If you think the iPad 2 is heavy, you definitely need stronger hands.

YMCA subscription is cheap :D

Seriously, I would buy 7" iPad, I need a smaller factor from time to time, that's why I use RIM Playbook for email and notes.

Some folks were asking for 26" here on forums

if APPL made it, they would come $$$$$$$$$$$$
NO Apple has made things that were not very popular. (cough newton cough) You have confused cause and effect so your logic is flawed. Apple studies the market and needs of the consumer and then presents products pre-designed to be popular. Other companies make products they think they can make a profit on. Apple makes products that work better and fill needs and so they sell. :apple:
