I think it goes more to show how damaging fanboying is to the ability to have intelligent discussions. People have been trying to talk about bigger iPhones and smaller iPads since launch but instead of fun/constructive discussions it was always sabotaged by the same predictable users trying to prove "one size MUST fit all".

Hopefully with the 4" iPhone and 7.85" iPad then these people will calm down and realize that the usability of a product is more about how the OS caters to it rather than this idea that there is a "perfect" size that should never be changed.

Agreed.

My ideal iPad-P (pocket)
8" screen (more or less)
7.7" +/- on the long side
5" +/- width (so I can easily grasp it with one hand)

1280x960 or 1280x800 resolution, depending on the device dimension.

All the abilities of iPad 2 (which will be old version by then)
768MB of RAM
plus compass,
high-megapixel back camera with flash.
miniSD slot

0.9 Lb max weight.

I expect shorter battery life (obviously), but if it can manage 2/3 the time compared to full size (10 inch) I will be happy.

Lets see,

Screen: 7.9"
Height: 7.87 inches (200 mm)
Width: 5.3 inches (134.7 mm)
Depth: 0.28 inch (7.2 mm)
Weight: 0.68 pound (308 g)
Battery: 10 hours.

Slightly larger then I was asking/predicting, but not bad.
Much lighter then expected.
Much longer battery time.

Display resolution I came up with thinking of a narrower shape, but as same time I also mentioned iPad 2 specs.

LED Flash still a big WANT item on mini.

miniSD was a no-go, and really external memory is more a liability.

768MB RAM still a must have minimum, but rumors is mini has only 512? Teh????

I just recently got a Nexus 7 and I was surprised how much I like the form factor.
Even more surprising is that the smaller size isn't only an advantage on the go but also at home.

It's just much more convinient to pick it up and hold it in one hand. The only disadvantage is reading publications/papers. Everything else including websurfing is pretty much the same as on my iPad1 10inch screen.

I can imagine many people feel the same and that would mean the iPad mini could easily become the dominant formfactor.
