I agree a smaller iPad would be nice. The iPad and iPad 2 are only as portable as a laptop. Sure, they're thinner and lighter, but you can't slip them in a jacket pocket or anything, whereas you can with a BlackBerry Playbook or a Samsung Galaxy Tab. There needs to be an iPad Air or something.

Perhaps a 6-inch iPod Touch with 1440 x 960 resolution would be worthwhile?
I like it! :)
Perhaps a bit larger though than Apple would like. A 5 inch might be just right and fit better in most pockets. We can only hope.

While eight inches is an interesting number to think about, something between 5 and 7 inches, thin yet rugged... and with the high quality Apple design and construction, might be able to please many and command a premium price. It may also be more feasible to get a retina display into a device of that size. Call it a sixth generation iTouch. :)

Let's not forget that there is a massive consumer poll in the developing world where $400 to $800 USD is a lot of money. The lower price point of mini will bring in a lot of those consumers. I bet the Ipad mini will be a much better seller than Ipad in the next 2 to 3 quarter. Much like Android phone total outsell Iphones total. Lower price point work for a lot of consumers who does not have too much money to spend......

so 80% of apple fans are sheep. interesting

Makes me laugh how in the span of a little less than a year most posters here thought a smaller was so lame, Now all of a sudden its going to be awesome!

Just goes to show how wishy washy people are and how easily influenced they are.

I think it goes more to show how damaging fanboying is to the ability to have intelligent discussions. People have been trying to talk about bigger iPhones and smaller iPads since launch but instead of fun/constructive discussions it was always sabotaged by the same predictable users trying to prove "one size MUST fit all".

Hopefully with the 4" iPhone and 7.85" iPad then these people will calm down and realize that the usability of a product is more about how the OS caters to it rather than this idea that there is a "perfect" size that should never be changed.

No. Didn't you see all the naysayers on the leaked parts forums? They only begrudgingly admitted the mini was real when the announcement came out.

yes and they will be placing their orders for one asap no doubt. lol

must be embarassing though. Towing the party line that anything smaller than 9.8 is pointless only for apple to do a u-turn. I wonder if some of them realise that apple just says these things to sell their own devices and not that the actual stuff they say is true. (like the perfect 3.5inch iphone)
will they ever wake up? im doubtful

I don't think they were lying. I think they honestly believed that 9.7 and 3.5 are best. BUT they have to make what the market wants. Simple business. If I made lemonade and thought it had the perfect amount of sugar, but people complained that it wasn't sweet enough, I have to add more sugar or I lose sales. Again, simple business.

What can you do with 8 inches you can't do better with 10?

That question is begging for an inappropriate answer that I will not be providing.

In other news, I really do believe there is a market for this, just not yet - Apple will make it. Was there a market for 9.7" tablets before the original iPad? I rest my case.

Someone brought up the roaring sales of the 7" Samsung tablet. Well, because it's Android. Wait for iOS to infiltrate that space. The market for it will appear out of thin air just like it did for the iPad in 2010.

I don't need one (already have the iP5 & the new iPad) but I'll buy 3 or more for my brother, sister and parents.
