Am I the only one that actually prefers their phone to be somewhat “mobile”? (Yes, it’s a cell phone first and foremost to me).

3.5” on my iP4/4s is just right, even with my crappy eyesight. I like to carry mine in a front shirt pocket. Nekkid - no gaudy bumper that turns it into a brick that totally contradicts it’s slim design. I do everything on my 4S. Have my entire library of books and can read them quite nicely. Movies? doable but is 6” really any better? Is *any* screen really big enough when watching a movie? Besides, I never put myself in a position where I need to watch video on a “cell phone”.

Don’t understand this clamoring for big-assed displays in phones that only make them cumbersome and unwieldy. (But you do look downright funny with a phablet stuck to the side of your head).

Get with the times.

Why not instead of addressing screen size don't we address bezel.

If you put a bigger screen on the iPhones current form factor wouldn't that make everyone happy?

It's easily possible because the iPhone (especially the 4/4S) has one of the worst screen to bezel ratios in the industry. Actually during the 4S's time only the Motorola Droid 4 was worse and that had a slide out keyboard and all the workings that go with that.

I don't think that's a terribly unreasonable request. Win win for everyone.

To the OP, no, you are definitely NOT the only one who prefers a smaller screen! I too appreciate the screen sizes of the 4/4S and 5/5C/5S.

To those who are saying that "no one is forcing you" to buy a new phone, "get with the times", "stop being a crybaby" and so on, it is my strong opinion that you are simply SEEING THINGS FROM OUR POINT OF VIEW NOW, with this tiny reversal!

I can't COUNT the number of complaints I've read about the small screens of the iPhone, and how disappointed people are that the 5C and 5S keep the same form factor, and how they hope the 6 will have a larger screen, and how lame Apple is and how predictable and NON-innovative it is, and so on. ON and ON and ON.

Well, now you know how WE FEEL--those of us who PREFER the present screen sizes of the iPhones--when we read these unrelenting tirades, in every freaking thread in every freaking forum.

This thread points out that WE EXIST. And there are probably a lot of us. We LIKE that Apple hasn't increased the screen size. Does that mean we are whining? No. Does that mean that we are crybabies? No. Quite the opposite. It means that WE ARE GRATEFUL.

We have a right to OUR preferences just as much as you do.

Pot. Kettle. Black. Look in the mirror why don't you?

Why can't people have options? If a smaller screen works for you that's great. But, why say everyone should be okay with a small screen? I don't understand the logic that just because you want something a certain way, it's the only way it should be. People use their phones differently. So, you don't have any right to tell someone else how to use their phone.

Why do you have to compare the 4S to a 6" screen? Why is it users who like smaller screens always use a crazy size in comparison for their argument? Why not compare it to a 4.5" screen which is just slightly larger than the 4S? And, yes...it does make a difference.

If you like the smaller screen then be happy with that. Why try telling someone that everyone needs a small screen? What's it to you? Should we all drive small sedans and remove all trucks and SUVs off the road?

That's my point. I see a trend and It is this:

View attachment 432574

A trend driven by media consumption on a "Phone" trying to be all things to all people.

That's not a phone.

Post like this crack me up, usually start with "I don't want to hold a tablet to my head" then show a picture of someone holding a tablet to their head.

There is one real phablet on the market (maybe 3 depending on certain opinions) so its a niche market. The trend has already maxed out. Look at the galaxy s4. Yes, it has a bigger screen then the s3 BUT the phone itself got smaller. This should show you in which direct they are gonna start moving. The S5 more then likely won't have a smaller screen but I think the bezel will get even smaller. My iPhone in a life proof case is similar in size compared to an S4....believe it or not I can still manage to hold it.

I think you'll be ok for quite sometime with phones that are sized well for you.

Agree. I like the 3.5 screen as well.

Their marketing for the 5 was BS. it does not fit in your hand and you can not sweep you finger from top to bottom. people must have giant hands, because 3.5 fits perfectly in my hand the 5 is too tall.

Nah, you just have girly baby hands. I can sweep the entire screen just fine, and I can't even palm a basketball.

Getting rid of those god awful bezels would go a long way in making a bigger screen in a manageable package. I have a Moto X and its great in terms of screen size and total size. It's pretty much the same height and just a little wider than the iPhone 5 but it has a 4.7" screen. Actually with the extra width to go along with the height it feels more comfortable than the iPhone 5. The HTC One Mini has the boom sound speakers and it manages to have a 4.3" screen in pretty much the same package as the iPhone 5. It shouldn't be difficult to increase the screen size without making the iPhone much bigger.

Did I miss the post where someone said everyone needs a small screen???

Uh, they still are selling the 4S for the .0000001 % that want smaller screens. Seems lik an odd request though.

I somehow think that your percentage is way off. As a person who would happily buy a 5s that was 4s sized to replace my 4s, I'm not going to buy a 4s to replace my 4s. I don't like big phones, I don't want a big phone, but I don't really have a choice if I want a new phone.

Small screen fans, please respond and do not ignore this person's statement. What he is saying is true and completely reasonable.

----------

I was hoping Apple would address soon the huge bezels it currently has in order to accommodate a larger screen but IMO this will not happen anytime soon.

I say this since the only way IMO to reduce the bezels to the minimum was to redesign the home button and make it as little as possible, or completely remove it. But now that we have the gimmick fingerprint sensor, we know that the huge bezel at the bottom of the phone wont be going away in the next 2-3 years. They'll want to milk the profits of that gimmick before they remove it and fix the awful screen to bezel ratio.

I'm not sure it is a perfectly reasonable statement. I have a two year old 4s. I like the size, but I don't like that I'm using two year old tech. I'm ready for an upgrade. I'll throw this back to you, what is my upgrade path?

I am also using a two year old 4s and was hoping that at least one of the new iPhones would return to the 4/4s size or even smaller. The 4s still barely fits in my back pocket but is larger than I need or want a mobile phone to be. I cannot use it with one hand. I have small hands and my thumb doesn't come anywhere close to being able to span the entire screen in one stroke. I understand that the majority of the people who work in the tech industry and who are likely designing the current monstrosities masquerading as smartphones are likely men who have larger hands than I do and that most of the vocal keyboard warriors on tech blogs and boards are fat guys who by necessity have to wear large pants with large pockets. But all tech consumers are not obese with overly flexible hands from gaming and jacking off. We're being completely ignored by the market. Had Apple made the 5s 3-3.5 inches tall and I'm talking the entire phone length not just the screen, I would have gladly paid $500 on contract for it. But they didn't. They didn't offer to sell me anything, in fact. LG, HTC, Motorola, *****ung, etc. clearly don't want my money, either. In light of there no longer being any new, top of the line smartphones which are of a size that can reasonably still be described as 'mobile', my upgrade plan is to go back to a dumbphone for the first time in 7 years as those are the only phones left which fit in my hand and pockets. I'll be saving about $90 a month which will also not be spent on anything made by these companies which have decided they exclusively want obese men with fat sweaty sausage fingers who don't own TVs to be their only customers.

the 5C or 5S.

I'm advocating for a 4.7 - 5 inch screen.

You do the same for the 3.5 inch screen.

It would be awesome if we could have both, but most likely there will be two sizes, a 4 inch and a 4.7-5 inch iPhone. If Apple has refused to catch up to the market with a bigger phone, what would make you think that they would go backwards towards a 3.5 inch that almost nobody wants?

They probably still make flip phones... i'd recommend those if you want a small phone. Smartphones are made for people using for "smart" things, thus a bigger screen makes sense.

Yah. Well. When I want a bigger screen I use an iPad mini or a 13" laptop. When I want to make a phone call right now I use a 4S. I've learned to TOLERATE the longer form and the screen size of the iPod touch 5th gen, so I'm getting a 5C iPhone upgrade this year because I don't want to lag the hardware curve in the smartphone by too much. But the 4S screen size is my favorite, for reading books and the quick browse for news, weather etc. And if I want to do something really smart like add up the lunch tabs and divide by four, well... I'm not hauling out a tablet sized phone.

So if the 6 goes up from where we're at with the 5 / 5C / 5S, I'm pretty much done using smartphones once my 5C croaks. I'll go back to using some combo of an iPod touch and a dumbphone as my handbag gear.

Sounds like there's room in the smartphone product lines of the future for Apple to roll out even more models in a given year... :)

In fact, I have always felt the 4 inch current iPhone is very awkward, its too tall and narrow.

If I were Apple, I would make a 3.5-3.8 inch for you guys and a 4.7-5 inch for the rest.

Yup, I think that would perfect for me. I find the iPhone 5 screen a tad small and I thought the nexus 4 screen was huge. So I guess a 4.3-ish screen would be perfect for me. If they could keep the form factor but make the screen be edge to edge with zero bezel on the sides that would be perfect.

Why is the 4.1-4.6" range of screens so shunned? I feel left out, because I believe the perfect screen size (for me) is in that range...

Because if they make a 4.1 - 4.6 iPhone, the ones who like want the 3.5-4 will be pissed as well as the ones who want the one 4.7-5 (which seems to be the largest crowd). Its hard to please everyone so there will always be pissed off people.

It is obvious that there should be at least two screen sizes with current hardware/internals. Just like HTC One and HTC One Mini.

Being realistic though, knowing how Apple likes to keep the high profit margins and milk their designs, the smaller screen iPhone is likely to be the current 4 inch.

I esteem for those of you who like smaller screen size than current phones. For web surfing, video game and videos which is not sufficient to use it though. Also resolution as well, sure you do not watch lots of things on it, some of you would rather watch movie or tv series than tv. I personally think, between 5 and 5 and half inches will be fine for next generations.

People who simply can't stand a larger screen than 3.5 inches will simply have to stick with their iPhone 4/4s until they become unusable. The people want something larger than a 4 inch screen will simply have to wait until apple releases such a phone. Those that can adapt will simply keep upgrading.

This thread is going around in circles and nobody is going to convince anyone of anything.
