I'm surprised that the little yellow sticky note on the Apple Store page hasn't been changed to read:

"Look, we're updating alright?! Stop refreshing every five seconds!!!"

If it's a cached version how are we gonna see the updates?

Look at the places where it says "image." Those are the images that are being changed right now. Does this mean updates to the iPod mini? Or maybe just a new graphic.

Let's also get the last G4 Powerbook jump outta the way and done with! Therefor, MWSF should be awsome! :) *prays MWSF will have G5 powerbooks and no more iPod mini "fun."

The CPU speed alone isn't everything, think of e.g. the bus speed which is much higher with the G5. As for G4 1.5 = G5 1.0, this might not be true today, but I bet on it in overall, running 10.4 and 64bit optimized software (Photoshop,...). Think of Quartz: when they introduced it, all graphic cards were more or less same fast. But with Quartz Extreme the newer graphic cards had a speed boost by 200-300%.

I'd be very surprised if the G5 laptops, when they come out, have a bus as fast as the desktops. I suspect they'll reign back the bus to say 400Mhz tops to get better battery and heat performance out of it. An 800Mhz to 1.1Ghz bus is going to run awfully hot in that small space. I also question the 1.5 = 1.0 speed comparison. I'd expect they'd be pretty similarly matched at most applications, clock for clock, apart from the more memory hungry applications like DV or editing huge images in Photoshop. So 1.5 G5 = 1.5 G4 in most situations IMHO.

Barefeats tested the Powerbooks against the PowerMacs and in most tests a single 1.6Ghz G5 is only a little quicker than a 1.33 Powerbook. Certainly not much more than you'd expect from a 20% Mhz jump. I suspect a lot of that is down to the bus and hard disk speed which may be limiting factors on a G5 powerbook also as they aren't likely to have SATA drives and desktop speed buses. Sure, maybe as the G5 optimized apps get released we'll see a bigger gap developing but it's not going to be an order of magnitude bigger as some people seem to think.

Laptops are about compromise. You don't expect them to be as fast as a desktop. The G4 is perfectly ok as a laptop CPU. The bus could do with being faster but that's about the only complaint.

yes great idea.. if you want your laptops to be g5 tower sized

why would you want those clock speeds in an ibook? so you can have less battery life with no noticable performance increase?

clock speed is the LEAST IMPORTANT SPEC... i wish the public would start realising it... all the manafacturers do but of course they still have to accomodate for the 99% of the market you will buy whatever has the most mhz or go out of business...

the xserve isn't that big. and is has 2 g5's.

MHZ is important if you need to run certain apps. That, my friend is a fact. So obviously its something I would like to have/use. Heck, 600mhz g3 is minimum JUST for the iSight. 700Mhz G4 barely handles 8 GB tracks simultaniously... and that is with a GIG of ram. Therefore clockspeed IS relevant.

Front page of Apple asia has a picture stating all new ibooks

a furphy. points to hardware page with old specs and "all new iBook" headline. The South Korean store has a "new iMac". But it's just the 20inch.

will the hardware pages also go down before all is revealed?
