This is insane, Apple...

Here is a page from Apple support regarding non-iCloud compatible macs in a system where other computers do use iCloud:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4929

Your iPhone, iPod touch, Mac, or PC may be unable to meet the system requirements for iCloud. This may be the case for some MobileMe members moving to iCloud.* Continue reading to learn what iCloud services you may still be able to access.

Products Affected
iCloud
If you created an iCloud account from an iOS 5 device or Mac running OS X Lion, but have other devices or computers that don't meet the system requirements, you may be able to use some features of iCloud with limited functionality. Please note that devices which do not meet the system requirements for iCloud are not supported by Apple or AppleCare for use with iCloud.

Mail
If you want to check your iCloud Mail, you can do so by visiting icloud.com from a Mac or PC (as long as it meets the browser requirements for icloud.com). Alternatively, you can configure a mail application that supports IMAP via SSL for use with iCloud Mail. More information is available here.

Calendars
If you want to check your iCloud Calendars, you can do so by visiting icloud.com from a Mac or PC (as long as it meets the browser requirements for icloud.com).

Contacts
If you want to check your iCloud Contacts, you can do so by visiting icloud.com from a Mac or PC (as long as it meets the browser system requirements for icloud.com).

Additional Information
* When moving from MobileMe to iCloud, if you have computers that do not meet the system requirements for iCloud, you may notice the following behaviors:

Mail may repeatedly give an alert message until you update your server settings for iCloud.
Syncing of Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, or other data types may fail silently, or may give generic alert messages.
iOS 3, iOS 4: You may receive an alert that your MobileMe account has expired.

Anyone experiencing problems with published iWeb sites since migrating? According to the migrating info we should keep it till 2012 even after migrating, but since doing so all my sites are not loading.

still trying to get to grips with iOS5 here. Struggling with how I am going to work iCloud as all my itunes content is against an old email address which I would rather ditch but I also use mobileme for contacts, calendars, mail etc.

That and I can only have Lion on my HTPC macmini and not my macbook which I use for emails etc!

Think I might forego the itunes part so that I can keep the mail etc synced as my wife also uses contacts and calendars from MM.

I have a Mac running Lion, iPad, and iPhone3G. Now the iPhone will not get iOS5. I could move to iCloud and as it looks from the setup page is that I wouldn't then be able anymore to sync Address and iCal information over to the iPhone which currently works just fine with MobileMe.

Can iOS4 access Calendar and Address Book information on the Cloud? Do I have to sync my iPhone using iTunes and a cord?

Does 10.7.2 force me to upgrade to iCloud?

Any ideas?

I have the same situation!
My main problem is also the Calender en Address Book. Will they be able to sync with iOS4 when I'm on iCloud? Or maybe just display the Calender, like a subscription?

For now, I have a 10.7.2 Mac, an iOS5 iPad and iOS4 iPhone3G, Mobile Me still works (until the end of June 2012)...

For me the lack of Snow Leopard support is a major flaw with iCloud. Forcing users to upgrade to Lion is just not on. I run a graphics studio with 5 Mac Pros, 5 iPhones plus my personal MBP at home, all which sync their calendars, contacts etc with MM.

So from July onwards what I am supposed to do? Upgrading to Lion is a complete no no in the professional environment, Lion is just an eye candy release for the consumer market. I have spent the last year perfecting a very reliable and stable 10.6 workflow. All our Photoshop plug-ins, Printer drivers etc all work flawlessly so to go through all that optimisation process again for the Lion upgrade is not something I want to be forced into doing.

I do feel if enough of us non-Lion users make our voices heard then the guys at Apple may have a re-think. I mean they've managed to develop a Windows iCloud app so it can't be that hard. Is an online petition a good idea to get the ball rolling?

Hmm, this is a bit of a mess by Apple.

Does anybody know this: Will mobileme work in iOS5?

I have a 3GS and would like to upgrage to iOS5. However, Apple won't let me install Lion on my CoreDuo MacBook. And so I'm sticking with MobileMe for as long as I can.

Hope someone can clarify. Thanks.

This could turn out to be a massive fail for people who have been using MobileMe (or .mac before that).

No Snow leopard support, lack of iDisk and lack of the following sync options.

• Dashboard Widgets
• Dock Items
• Keychain
• Mail Accounts
• Mail Rules, Signatures, and Smart Mailboxes
• Mac OS X Preferences syncing

For people with multiple computers this is a poor show. Intentionally making Snow Leopard obsolete is unforgivable when Lion isn't fully stable yet with many peoples software and workflows.

This is gonna stop me from getting an iPhone 4s and sticking with the 3Gs and iOS 4, as I rely on some of the MobileMe features on a daily basis with working on my desktop at home, laptop when not at a desk, and desktop at work. All these computers need to run Snow Leopard, and cannot be updated to Lion until Pro Tools and other software is fully compatible.

As much as I like Apple, their continued forced obsolescence of often perfectly good hardware/software does annoy me, especially when you use their products for professional purposes.

I've already sent a nice long rant email to Tim Cook.

I've already sent a nice long rant email to Tim Cook.

Me too, but not so much a rant, a compliment on allowing non paid users to use the great syncing features that are present presently in MobileMe (which is a great move), and then a big caveat about Snow Leopard, and the services we are losing . I hadn't even though about the people who are quite happy with older iOS devices who appear to be getting shafted by this move.

9:00am and still not able to move MobileMe accounts to iCloud.

I've already sent a nice long rant email to Tim Cook.

Me too, I urge as many of us as possible to voice their opinions to Tim/Apple. I've been a paid up user of .mac ever since it started and now feel totally let down by Apples decision over this. We need to speak up and make sure Apple know how we feel. If there's enough backlash then who knows?

Email to Tim Cook

I have sent the following to Tim Cook by email:
Dear Mr. Cook,

I have 6 macs between home and office. One, a new MBP, is running Lion. The others are running SL and one, an old PPC Mini is running tiger. I also have an iPad and an iPhone 4. I use MobileMe to sync calendars, contacts and email between all these machines.

I cannot/will not upgrade two of my main computers to Lion any time soon because of lion-incompatible production and financial software. It would cost over $1500 to get new, Lion compatible versions of that software.

SO:

Is it true that I cannot turn on iCloud on the MBP running lion because it would transfer all the data to iCloud and immediately end all*MobileMe*email/calendar/ contacts syncing on all the other machines?

Or, will iCloud and*MobileMe*work together, syncing between them, so that I can use MM on the non-lion computers and use iCloud on the MBP at least until*until June 2012?

I cannot keep using*MobileMe*email/calendar/syncing after June 2012?

If the answers are yes, no, yes... APPLE what the hell were you thinking when you did this???? Much of your installed base, e.g. those running snow leopard and "lower", will not have any way to use iCloud *or have apple solutions for syncing mail/calendars and contacts after June 2012... ARRRGGGHHH!

Plus, you will discontinue*MobileMe**gallery and iDisc, as well as other syncing features of MobileMe, services I value/use a lot and will have to somehow replace outside the Apple ecosystem. Thanks a lot apple. I feel you have really let me down.

I found this NOT VERY ENCOURAGING information about non-icloud compatible devices on the apple site:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4929

I guess I don't get it? I have had an Apple id with name@gmail.com. So I did all the iOS/Lion updates, get iCloud, and create a new name@me.com. I have everything setup and running. However...

1. I can't change my Apple ID to the new @me.com account. Not a huge deal, but kind of a pain. If I try to create a new ID, using the me.com account, it says you can't use a me.com account for Apple ID? Why?

2. If I logon and use the @me.com account, I can send email but not receive. If I send an email to that account, it bounces back stating 550, illegal or unknown alias?

What's wrong?

I created my iCloud account with my @domain and then created a @me acct. then the @me acct was automatically added as a secondary email address for iCloud. That could be what's going on.

I too would like to switch iCloud to my @me but don't know how or why it won't let me.

Funny - I have the exact same setup besides that I haven't upgraded my iPad yet to iOS5. Does iOS5 work with the MobileMe Calendar and Address Book like Lion 10.7.2 does?

I can't upgrade to iOS 5 because my 3G iPhone can't run it. I HATE the look of the iPhone 4/4GS because it looks like a brick encased in glass and has sharp edges and no soft curves like my 3G has. I have to wait for the iPhone 5 before I will consider a new iPhone.

Very funny. I think the iPhone4(s) design looks like a brick as well. I always refer to it as the brick.

My problem is that I would like to upgrade my iPad to iOS5. I did upgrade Lion to 10.7.2 and I cannot upgrade my iPhone3G to iOS5. So I have to stick with MobileMe as long as possible. Now - can iOS5 use MobileMe Calendar and Adress Book ? Apperently no one can answer that.

Very well said, and I too am in the EXACT same position as yourself.

I've already sent a nice long rant email to Tim Cook.

As did I, at 7:05 EST

The lack of MM support and SnowLeopard support has left me speechless.
I may just return my 4S, as it won't work with my setup. That is a statement that in and of itself is disgusting, yet accurate.

Did, and done. Email, feedback, and chat w/mm.

So I've read through all 13 pages, and I just wanted a little clarification from anyone who has done this: upgrading an iPhone 4 to iOS 5 but keeping my MobileMe account a MobileMe account and not upgrading to iCloud. Is MobileMe still able to sync everything (including keychains) with the phone and Mac running 10.7.2?

Ok, I have verified that under 10.7.2, you have both MobileMe and iCloud options. To keep syncing with MobileMe, just ignore and close out the option to migrate to iCloud.

Under iOS5, MobileMe syncing is still there. iCloud is a separate option under Settings.

I got through yesterday night at 11 CST. Tried for almost 2 hrs. When it again said "Move error", I hit refresh 3-4 times on the same page until it moved everything. Of course, I had to go through the process each time.

iOS 5 can still sync with MobileMe Calendar and Address Book. Just did the upgrade on my iPad 2. So until it goes away in June 2012, you can keep syncing (hoping that Apple won't release an iOS 5.x that takes it away. I'm guessing it will stay until MobileMe is gone completely)

Will iPhone 4S w/iOS5 support:
calendar
contacts
MM mail
settings/sigs/prefs/widgets etc

while running Snow Leopard, and NOT upgrading to iCloud?
So will it be "business as usual" until next June, if we ignore the upgrade from MM?

Anyone know this for fact, or have the doc from Apple- way too many conflicting info out there....

It looks like the iCloud is precipitating. So far for me it's been a bust. Whether trying to sync with it on my Mac or my iDevices, all I end up with is a message box that traps me in a loop. The message is the simple and cryptic, "An error has occurred." I have a choice of "Cancel" or "Try again," both of which bring up the same message box.

well i got this

Image

Last night, midnight , Chicago time, I got an "error Message" when trying to move to the Cloud.
My message was that the "servers are busy, please try again later". Guess everyone was trying to migrate.
My question- will my Mac keep presenting me the migrate option.I Installed 10.7.2 and iOS5 last night and immediately got the "invitation" to migrate to the cloud. But that is now gone. How DO we migrate at a later date?
