I guess I don't get it? I have had an Apple id with name@gmail.com. So I did all the iOS/Lion updates, get iCloud, and create a new name@me.com. I have everything setup and running. However...

1. I can't change my Apple ID to the new @me.com account. Not a huge deal, but kind of a pain. If I try to create a new ID, using the me.com account, it says you can't use a me.com account for Apple ID? Why?

2. If I logon and use the @me.com account, I can send email but not receive. If I send an email to that account, it bounces back stating 550, illegal or unknown alias?

What's wrong?

Just another disappointed long time Mac user & MobileMe from the get-go, nevermind Snow Leopard I'm still on Leopard and thats where I can afford to be. Maybe I should switch to a Windblows machine (yuk). Maybe it's time to stop talking folks into Macs??

Yes they are and I'm thrilled.

Just the thought of all the people that will buy new computers and phones just to have iCloud is sure to make my Apple Stock soar...

In the meantime, I'm sitting back enjoying my bug free, glitch free computing experience with my highly optimized Snow Leopard.

My, it's good to be working with a proven OS.

Now that the public has the Magical iCloud, after a few revs it will be ready for those of us with PATIENCE. :D

 just got a cavity

Bye Bye

This is the start of a failing apple, they should have rolled this out to user's by section, I have several xp machines and snow leopard machines and now I can't use the service? Makes the iPhone 5 update almost worthless to me, I am downgrading back to the iOS 4 as I type right now.

I am thinking of maybe just going back to the exchange and windows world, it was nice but this just screwed everything up again.

Bye, bye apple.

Here I come blackberry! :)

Hope you enjoy...

"A technical failure in Europe is suspected of causing a huge backlog of messages worldwide for BlackBerry users, who have experienced three days of outages, Research In Motion said Wednesday."

No iCloud love for me. I'm not leaving SL, and I'm not loosing what I need synced currently and already paid for through June of 12'

Got a year to think about this...

I might be in the minority on this, but iCloud is a dummy'd down version of MM, nothing more.

I completely agree.....F iCloud!

I'm loving all this confusion and complaining, having experienced it three years ago.

When I signed up for MobileMe at launch I was faced with the same issue: Set up a new Apple ID for the service and maintain my original ID, created when I bought my first Mac.

Not wanting to manage two IDs (and not having many purchases under my original ID) I decided to ditch the first and have only managed one ID since 2008. All iTunes purchases and account syncing is handled under one account.

Luckily iCloud allows migration of me.com accounts.

Just a head's up.
I was, after being denied all day, finally able to transfer my email only account over from MobileMe to iCloud.

So if it isn't working for you, give it some time.

?change ID in iTunes?

So.... if I have a @me.com for MM syncing, but a @domain for AppleID...
Could I go into my iTunes account and just change the AppleID to the @me.com address?

Wouldn't that work? Could I then use the @me address for everything, or will it give an error (like account in use?).

PS. I like the post a few pages earlier.... Use your @domain.com for everything. Just export your MM calendars and then reimport them into the iCloud calendars. I think that should work.

pps. I've been forwarding my @domain mail to my @me.com address, and then syncing my iMac and iPhone with it (the @me.com address). It works. My wife can then sync directly with the @domain address, and we can both use the emails without messing each other up...

So I've read through all 13 pages, and I just wanted a little clarification from anyone who has done this: upgrading an iPhone 4 to iOS 5 but keeping my MobileMe account a MobileMe account and not upgrading to iCloud. Is MobileMe still able to sync everything (including keychains) with the phone and Mac running 10.7.2?

I am waiting for the exact same answer. I'd upgrade the iPad to iOS 5, but need to make sure I upgrade iTunes and OS X as well. It appears to be an all or nothing, but not sure if MobileMe will still be supported under iOS 5. My guess is not.

As for OS X 10.7.2 syncing support for MobileMe, I've seen a few posts out here that say it's still there. For that one, I may use my wife's Mac mini 2010 model to see what happens.

Now the only problem I am having is getting prompted once in a few to enter my password in Mail.
Anyone else having this issue?
I'm hoping it's just due to the servers being wonky on the first day.

Summary
An Apple ID is the email address you use as a login for just about everything you do with Apple, including using iCloud to store your content, buying songs from the iTunes Store, and downloading apps from the App Store.

When you set up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you use the same Apple ID for iCloud services and purchases on the iTunes Store, App Store, and iBookstore. You can, however, use one Apple ID for iCloud services and another Apple ID for store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match). You will get all the benefits of iCloud whether you use the same Apple ID for iCloud and store purchases, or different IDs for each.

Products Affected
iCloud
For guidance on which AppleID you should use when setting up iCloud, please see the sections below that apply to you:

Using the same Apple ID for Store purchases and iCloud (recommended)
Using the same Apple ID for store purchases and iCloud is recommended for most users. To use the same ID, follow these steps:

iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

When you first set up your iOS 5 device, enter the Apple ID you use for iTunes in the setup screens. It will be used for store purchases and iCloud.
If you skipped the setup process, enter your Apple ID in Settings > iCloud and Settings > Store.

Mac: Enter the same Apple ID in Apple () menu > System Preferences > iCloud and in
iTunes > iTunes Store.

PC: Enter the same Apple ID in Control Panel > Network and Internet > iCloud and in iTunes > iTunes Store.

Using one Apple ID for iCloud and a different Apple ID for Store Purchases
You can use different Apple IDs for iCloud and store purchases and still get all of the benefits of iCloud. Just follow these steps:

iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

When you first set up your iOS 5 device, enter the Apple ID you want to use with iCloud. If you skipped the setup assistant, sign in to Settings > iCloud and enter the Apple ID you’d like to use with iCloud.
In Settings > Store, sign in with the Apple ID you want to use for store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match). You may need to sign out first to change the Apple ID.
Mac:

Enter the Apple ID you want to use for iCloud in Apple () menu > System Preferences > iCloud.
Enter the Apple ID you want to use for store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match) in iTunes > iTunes Store
PC:

Enter the Apple ID you want to use for iCloud in Control Panel > Network > Internet > iCloud.
Enter the Apple ID you want to use for store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match) in iTunes > iTunes Store.
Note: You can switch the Apple ID you use for store purchases at any time. However, you can only change the account you use for any iTunes in the Cloud features once every 90 days. See this article for more information.

Using a MobileMe account with iCloud
If you have a MobileMe account (you have an email that ends in @me.com or @mac.com), you should enter your MobileMe email address when prompted for your Apple ID. This will set up MobileMe mail, contacts, calendar, and bookmarks on your device. This is also an important step for moving your MobileMe account to iCloud.

iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

When you first set up your iOS 5 device, enter the email address you use with MobileMe email as your Apple ID. If you skipped the setup assistant, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendar, select MobileMe add your MobileMe account.
In Settings > Store, confirm that the Apple ID at the bottom is that one you use for store purchases. If it isn’t, tap to sign out and then enter the Apple ID you use for purchases.
Mac:

Enter your MobileMe account in Apple () menu > System Preferences > MobileMe.
Enter the Apple ID you want to use for store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match) in iTunes > iTunes Store.
PC:

Enter your MobileMe account in Control Panel > Network > Internet > MobileMe.
Enter the Apple ID you want to use for store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match) in iTunes > iTunes Store.
Moving to iCloud

After setting up your devices and computers with MobileMe as indicated above, you can move your MobileMe account to iCloud. After you move, you will use your MobileMe email address for signing in to iCloud, and you will be able to access your mail, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks on the new service. Before moving, you should make sure your are running:

iOS 5 or later on all iOS devices you want to use with iCloud.
OS X Lion 10.7.2 or later on your Macs you want to use with iCloud.
Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) or Windows 7 on the PCs you want to use with iCloud.
You can move your MobileMe account to iCloud by visiting me.com/move.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I merge multiple Apple IDs into one?

You cannot merge two or more Apple IDs into a single one. You can, however, use one Apple ID for iCloud services and another Apple ID for store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match). See “Using one Apple ID for iCloud and a different Apple ID for Store Purchases” above for details.

Can I change the name of my Apple ID?

Yes. For example, if you get a new email address, you can change your Apple ID from your old address to your new address. For more information, follow the steps in this article.

Note: @mac.com and @me.com Apple IDs cannot be renamed.

I have purchased music, apps, or books with multiple Apple IDs. How can I get all of this content onto my iOS device?

First, you need to copy all of your purchased content so it is on the same Mac or PC with iTunes. This computer should be the one you sync your device with. For more information on how to move your content, see these articles:

Mac: iTunes for Mac: How to copy purchases between computers
PC: iTunes for Windows: How to copy purchases between computers
Next, authorize your computer to play content with each Apple ID in iTunes. Once your computer is authorized for all your content, it can be synced to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

How do I restore an iOS device from an iCloud Backup if I use different Apple IDs for iCloud and store purchases?

When you are first prompted for your Apple ID during the restore process, enter the Apple ID you use for iCloud. After your device restarts, you will be presented with another Apple ID prompt before items from the App Store and iBookstore begin restoring. This time, sign in with the Apple ID you use for store purchases.

I have an expired @me.com email address as an Apple ID. Can I use it with iCloud and receive email at that address?
Yes, if it is an @me.com address. To use your expired MobileMe account for iCloud, follow the iCloud setup instructions and enter your expired @me.com email address as your Apple ID. Your @me.com address it will be reactivated for email when you sign up for iCloud.

Important: You will need an active email address associated with your Apple ID to set up iCloud. To add an active email address, go to appleid.apple.com, sign in with your expired @me.com email address, and add an active email address to your account.

Just a head's up.
I was, after being denied all day, finally able to transfer my email only account over from MobileMe to iCloud.

So if it isn't working for you, give it some time.

So, just to be clear, the email only account is now set up as a totally separate iCloud account with all previous emails preserved and its separate email address intact?

I keep getting an error when on the last step to move to iCloud from MobileMe. It says, "Please try again later, we are unable to move your account at this time". Is anyone else getting this?

After getting this all day, I think I figured it out. I went into my MobileMe preferences in System Preferences on my Mac. I turn off all syncing after doing a final sync. Went to move to iCloud and...it worked!

I won't be upgrading yet since Lion isn't usable for me yet (who knows if it ever will be), but curious if those who have switched to iCloud have been able to keep their mac.com addresses?

I agree with the other sentiment that it's very odd and unfortunate to not allow Snow Leopard to use iCloud. With Lion not being usable for me now, I don't know what I would do if I had to buy a new computer since new Macs aren't SL compatible, which made me think of Windows--and knowing that Apple makes iCloud compatible with two versions of Windows but not a one generation old Mac OS only makes me think about switching to Windows more.

I have so many problems with Lion, but I don't know if Apple will ever hear the feedback and make changes to Lion because for some reason it seems a majority of people aren't affected by the problems that a minority of us seem to have, but which are real problems (and just outright bugs).

This whole thing is making me wonder about my plans to buy an iPhone 4S now since I am not even clear on whether I could sync that with MobileMe for the time being. This is the first time in my life I am holding out on Apple updates because I am afraid of what they will do and because I think one update(to iOS 5 on an iPhone 4S) might be incompatible with another update I don't have in place (Lion) and the first time I have downgraded an Apple product (Lion to SL). And MobileMe has always been so flaky, I am terrified of doing anything without making sure everything (mail and iDisk are completely backed up).

But I guess I can't even upgrade right now from what I understand--which really makes no sense--I mean who's heard of a mail system that doesn't work on a certain OS? It's just a domain name, etc. It's not like the Mac part of it is getting the iCloud integrated applications (updated iWork that uses Documents in the Cloud, etc). Anyhow, sorry for ranting. Just a frustrating day to see so many updates and not one for me to do! Because I ordinarily love updates! These ones are just not for me (yet, at the least). But I guess in short, I realize the problems with Lion make me wonder if I will ever be able to upgrade to a new Mac or ever get an iPhone! And Apple's software was always its strength. I mean I think it still is, but Lion does not follow the trend of stocky, healthy updates like 10.3 and 10.4 were.

I think I am there finally. However this has not been a smooth process, resulting in much frustration.

Some of it is almost certainly due to the volumes on the Apple servers and my impatience. Even then the errors I have received have been vague and meaningless. I lost the iphone and backup and had to start again from scratch.

The transition from mobileme went OK for my account, but my wife's email account took some jiggery pokery and I am not sure that I have it working completely.

Mail wasn't receiving push notifications until I set it to fetch and then put it back to push.

Reminders are cool, but I can't easily create a list (e.g. shopping) on the mac and know that it will be on the ipad or iphones. If I create a shopping list on the ipad it clutters up my reminders in iCal. Not that well thought out.

It somewhat weakens the Apple argument that only they can deliver stuff that "just works" when it clearly doesn't: not without a patient and a competent user. I'll be getting calls from friends and family with the opening question WTF? I am looking forward to several weeks of being Apple's unofficial support desk. Thanks (again) Apple.

Apple have gone nuts.

If I run a four year old PC running Microsoft Windows Vista I can run iCloud, but if I bought a new Mac in March 2011 that runs Snow Leopard I can't have it? Huh?

I can't upgrade to Lion as I use it at work and a number of apps need Rosetta - including Apple's own Filemaker db software! - and there are too many bugs and security holes in Lion (eg LDAP and Password security) for me to upgrade. I also have a Core Duo Mac mini in the office and that won't run Lion anyway. I would have bought the new mini but with Lion's restrictions and inadequacies it isn't business ready yet and unlike this year's iMacs this year's mini cannot be downgraded to Snow Leopard.

I can't upgrade to iOS 5 because my 3G iPhone can't run it. I HATE the look of the iPhone 4/4GS because it looks like a brick encased in glass and has sharp edges and no soft curves like my 3G has. I have to wait for the iPhone 5 before I will consider a new iPhone.

What all these changes Apple are implementing mean to me is that on a computer I am being pushed back to PCs, and on the phone I am being pushed to move over to Android (cough, spit).

Even if I had everything I needed (I have the money to get them, just not the inclination for the reasons above) iCloud is still a cut down version of Mobile Me. Yes, initially MobileMe was crap, but it improved a huge amount and now offers the best Gallery on the web - including for video - the iDisk was very useful, as was the syncing of Address Book and iCal, and of course the .Mac email address.

Photo Streaming is useless for me, I don't care where anyone else is right this minute, or where my phone is, I don't want iTunes in the cloud as I have only ever bought one single track online, ever (I buy CDs and rip them to Apple Lossless, it's cheaper and better quality). I don't want to store any confidential documents off our company server, especially not everything I write. I want to be able to store whatever files I like in the cloud.

The whole thing stinks. This one issue could cause Apple's loyal customer base to implode. Be careful Apple, you still have to look after the goose that lays the Golden eggs...

For more information on Apple IDs, see Frequently Asked Questions About Apple ID.

It's too bad a dissertation needs to be written for an apple update. Shame really.

Let me show you the flip side of this coin, as the poster above me share the same theory.

If you have SL (and must remain on it for purposes related to our needs) & you bought an iPhone 4s you have just lost mobile me and cloud syncing.

There, how about them apples.

If I am wrong, please someone prove it.

Aside from the fact that migration is not working right now, I really can't believe they took away most of the sync features of MobileMe.

Syncing of mail accounts, keychains and third-party-apps across my Macs and iDevices was one of the reasons for me to pay for MobileMe and it worked pretty great.

iCloud feels like the retarded little brother of MobileMe. :(

Any alternatives for seamless syncing between Macs?

So, just to be clear, the email only account is now set up as a totally separate iCloud account with all previous emails preserved and its separate email address intact?
Yes. And under the iCloud settings on my mac it just says "inactive" since my primary is the one I will use between my devices.

After getting this all day, I think I figured it out. I went into my MobileMe preferences in System Preferences on my Mac. I turn off all syncing after doing a final sync. Went to move to iCloud and...it worked!

I can confirm that this worked for me to, and i just got this problems for the last 5 hours. Turn of sync of mobile me!

Ok, let me get this straight.

I have 6 macs between home and office. One, a new MBP, is running Lion. The others are running SL and one, an old PPC Mini is running tiger. I have an iPhone 4, planning to get a 4S.

I cannot upgrade two of my main computers to Lion because of incompatible software. It would cost over $1000 to get new, Lion compatible versions of that software.

SO:

Is it true that I cannot turn on iCloud on the MBP running lion because it would transfer all the data to iCloud and end all MM email/calendar/ contacts syncing on all the other machines.

Or, will iCloud and MM work together until June 2012, syncing between them, so that I can use MM on the non-lion computers and use iCloud on the MBP?

I cannot keep using MM email/calendar/syncing after June 2012.

Am I right?

If the answers are yes, no, yes... APPLE what the hell were you thinking when you did this???? Most of your installed base will not have any apple solutions for syncing mail/calendars and contacts after June 2012... ARRRGGGHHH

EDIT: I found this NOT VERY ENCOURAGING information about non-icloud compatible devices on the apple site: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4929

I fully understand Apple hasn't been clear about this transition, but if you lose your emails during the transition, it's your fault.

You can backup from the File menu on Mail. You can move your emails to a virtual disk. You can move all your emails to a folder on Gmail. You can drag them to a folder on your desktop. There's Time Machine. There are so many tools to backup your stuff.

During any upgrade or transition, if you lose your data, it's your fault.
