You realize there is an iOS version of iPhoto that includes Journals right?

Didn't know about journals actually, thanks for mentioning this. Been exploring new features since switching over to iCloud this weekend.

While it seems to have a number of fun options, journals still seem pretty limited though, in particular since you can't create or edit them on a PC (Mac, Windows, or otherwise) and you also cannot apparently easily save them to your computer via "Save as a PDF" or saving as a .webarchive in Safari.

As a long-time Apple consumer, I'd like to give Apple the benefit of the doubt and think they would turn this into something more versatile as time goes on. But considering Apple's recent elimination of MobileMe (with its Galleries and web storage via iDisk) and impending elimination of iWork.com (all showing that Apple web services do not necessarily last for the long haul), it would be nice to be able to easily save journals somewhere just in case...

Granted but the more important question is why should they host files types for Apps they don't make? Wouldn't it make more sense from Apple's perspective to let those people host their own files, or at a minimum integrate into iCloud?

They aren't hosting the developer's files, they're hosting the User's files the developers have produced on our behaves.

It would still make sense for Apple to commit to syncing between my personnel devices, to me this is a limited function that a single system could be built to suit 80+% of users. Where as sharing between users is something that needs to happen in so many different ways that no one system is every likely to suit all uses even for a single user.

On this second point Apple still needs to do some work, so that services like Dropbox can be on the device and sandboxed but still host files on behave of other apps.

Will they never get rid of that horrible Notes design?

For a company that's cool with design, that Notes icon and layout is so outdated and ugly.

It's up there with that stupid flower icon for Photos (why can't we make our own simply from our photographs?) and the teared off paper in iCal.

Cute once. Old now.

End of rant.

How out of touch can the old folks at Apple be?

A 1950's Notebook is the best they can do?

Suddenly Google Tasks, Calendar & Other Apps are looking damn good.

I think Apple is stepping out of the box and trying to make all apps look as if they aren't virtual (the old book design with leather and stitching, the Game Center board looking like a poker table, etc). I give them credit because once everything is intertwined with iOS and OSX, it gives us a better feel of quality software. Everyone else is going for the 'Minority Report' look... BLAH!

I think it looks great. What do you want, an image of a robot butler holding a virtual screen?

If Apple got rid of the silly sleeve in front of the list of notes they could fit another item on there and someone somewhere wouldn't have to scroll down just to see one little item.

No, actually, it isn't. There is no Apple developed OS X equivalent of "Notes". Notes is also highly restricted in what it can do as a full fledged "notebook" app. I can not insert and take pictures...

Actually, it is. A Notes app for OS X is coming later this month with the release of Mountain Lion, and it will let you add pictures and attachments:

"Notes is designed for whatever’s on your mind, wherever you happen to be. Think it up. Jot it down. Make it even more noteworthy with photos, images, and attachments. You can add, delete, and flip through your notes or do a quick search. Use the Share button to send your notes with Mail or Messages. Pin important notes to your desktop so they’re easy to get to. And take them with you everywhere. Notes works with iCloud, so when you create or edit a note on your Mac, it automatically updates on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. And vice versa."

i feel like Apple plans on adding a lot to iCloud hence one reason why they are building two new data centers on top of the NC one. I see photo stream being added and eventually possibly iBooks, Find my Friends, and maybe even Maps all to the iCloud site.

It would also be cool if iTunes Match does actually stream in iOS 6 and they added in a way to see your music from a web app in iCloud like if i was on someone elses computer and then stream it from there. steve did say during WWDC 2011 he didn't like the web apps idea for music but i think it would be a nice complement to iTunes.

Isn't it about time 'Find my iPhone' was renamed?

Seen as though it doesn't just 'find iPhones' anymore, a more fitting name could be 'Find my Device'.

…or call it "Finders Keepers" (after the remote wipe) :D

Speaking of "not fully baked", Find My iPhone needs the ability on the device to require a password for:

1) Powering off
2) Putting the device in Airplane Mode

Right now you can lock your "Accounts" under restrictions to prevent changes to iCloud such as turning off "Find my iPhone", but that does not stop the standard shutdown or airplane mode disabling. I wonder if there is any liability in requiring a password to power down a mobile device.

yes!!! This is needed.

Though i totally agree with you, i wonder what good that would be if the sim card can easy be removed from the phone? Leaving the phone OFF line out of wifi range.

"The add-on gives users with lost gadgets some indication of how long they have to find their device."

You mean users have to search for their device being a certain length in order to find it? Or did you mean "how long time they have left to find their device"? ;-)

Seriously, how could anyone trust Apple with cloud data/apps?

Mac.com - big hype, now gone.
me.com - big hype, now gone.
mobileme - big hype, now gone.
iwork.com - big hype, nearly gone.

See the pattern?

One is missing: iTools - big hype, now gone.

Yes, and it should be available for all devices that connect to the internet. e.g., Macs, Airports, iPhones, iPodTouches, iPads, etc. Then Apple needs to get serious about helping stop thieves and stop the reselling and reactivation of stolen merchandise.

Not sure Airports are a big target, but all other devices work with Find my iPhone already. Besides the regular success stories .. I am not sure it is such a big security plus having this activated.

Re-name iTunes?

Its also about time they re-named iTunes :)

iTunes is at this point almost a generic name for music. When a singer or band
promotes their album on a talk show or other music show the host will almost
always say "You can get this Album on iTunes. It would be crazy to re-name iTunes. I know it's got so much other stuff under the same roof that it gets a little crazy. Just don't think they will ever rename it other than maybe call it
iTunes Music/Movies/Books/Podcasts and whatever else you can think of. What
they might do is create some additional stores. Nah. I don't think so.

I have to agree... They are taking away iWork.com and giving us iCloud "notes" and "reminders"?!?

I should have Apple clearance removed for my disloyal comments but...

Come on, iCloud is a step backwards as far as features go.

All this skeuomorphism is really nice to see and use.

I realise that's an unpopular opinion but surely I'm not the only person to like it?

wow, how exciting...

btw, these two apps have got to be two of the least inspired apps in terms of ui design, and that's putting it very mildly...

third party iCloud apps

Wondering if Apple is planning on opening things up on iCloud: Let third party developers create Apps. That would really add to the overall 'everything is in the cloud' experience.

Notes are being viewed by Apple as an essential data type that belongs in iCloud.

I know a couple that enters their shopping lists on their iPad and then grabs their iPhones knowing the list will be there when they arrive at the store. Nothing special for them to do. Achieving the same with a third-party solution would involve the extra step of installing and configuring the app on all devices.

Completely agree, notes is a simple and useful app that I would find difficult to do without.

I use notes for shopping, work hours, my training plan, list of bills, etc. All in one convenient place without having to worry about formatting, and synced across all my devices and soon to be available on an browser. Perfect.
