Why in the world would I pay money for this when I can do this for free with DropBox, which syncs my documents and non-iTunes songs and let's me play them from my phone and on any computer...

Someone please tell me the benefit of this and why anyone would pay for it.

$25 a year .. dropbox and Amazon cloud storage are free! Amazon just up'd me to 20gb for buying a Lady Gaga cd.. not that I am big on her music.. I just wanted the extra storage!!

You would not buy this. But most of the world could never figure out how to connect a 3rd party service. Remember the deal with Microsoft Windows and the Explorer browser. It became popular only because most people had no clue about how to down load and use a different browser. DropBox is way harder than getting Firefox.

iCloud will be a joke...

...if the performance of Apples media servers is like it has been over the last two days.

The iTunes servers can not even stream a :50 trailer without interruption. I have a 30Mb connection and am usually able to download movies and music at between 10-15 Mb. I started a download a little while ago and it should be completely downloaded in about 22 hours.

It does not matter to me that this is a period of transition. There is no excuse for substandard performance for a product I am paying for.:mad::mad:

This is progress?

Why would I trust Apple with iCloud when the App Store is down for a whole day?? There is no way I'm going to have anything to do with this.

I think that it is totally reasonable to assume that a component of iCloud will be the streaming of iTunes purchased music for a nominal fee annually. People who do not use iTunes to purchase music rightfully will pan this service of having zero utility. As has been duly noted, there are alternative means of streaming music now without relying on this potential service.

I think that the pricing structure seems a little dubious at the moment, I don't think it's reasonable to assume that Apple is going to mix ads with a nominal annual subscription.

I do not think it is reasonable to assume that music will be the entirety of iCloud. The most logical reason that this has garnered the most attention is because the record labels usually mouth off to the press, so it is the most that we know about it. Second, I doubt Apple would use such a ubiquitous phrase, such as the Cloud, and limit it to merely media streaming. The name simply does not match what it would do. Finally, Apple keynotes always narrate a particular story and in reality are not very surprising events. The WWDC banners clearly place Lion, iOS 5, and iCloud as peers of each other in importance. It would make no sense to elevate something that could very easily be saved for the Fall music event into the developers conference in such a manner.

Now if this was the Wall Street Journal running the story, there would be more veracity to it. It will be interesting to see if the WSJ adds any context to this in the coming days.

OMG I know!

How are we supposed to trust Apple when they can only keep the App Store open for 1056 out of 1057 days?!

GEEZ.

(I think the app store opened on July 11, 2008)

Because it's "iCloud" silly!

Also, it must be cool to have an "i" in the name and they have to do something with that brand new datacenter.

I usually think Apple's services are well thought out. This move has me baffled.

Here is a crazy idea..quit your bitching and see what Apple delivers on Monday. Geez, some people get their panties in a wad based on rumor sites.

Bitching about people bitching is just as annoying.

Let's hope monday is going to be full of good surprises!

Haha and bitching about bitching about people bitching is hilarious!

Can anyone think of a better argument to counter whiners other than...

"Whining about whiners huh?"

Please.

I was really hoping iCloud would be a storage locker that I could put anything I wanted in, like Dropbox, that would be accessible from any Apple device over the internet. And I was expecting it to be free since Google, Amazon, and Dropbox are. Apple needs to have at least some level of free service to compete, with more storage/features available at a good price.

This is shaping up to be a huge disappointment, another Ping, MobileMe. I think it's going to be a real missed opportunity for Apple to blow away the competition with something much better.

Or, you could wait for the actual announcement, before you draw any hard conclusions...... just a thought. ;)

I love how all you clowns have already concluded and wrapped up the uselessness of iCloud, knocking it using colorful and disparaging language, stating what an utter failure it is (and Apple, of course) and how they would not in a million years use it, based on..absolutely nothing. We do not officially know a single feature of this product.

You people will never grow up. Thank God Apple ignores the opinions of people like you, it's why they have become so successful. Such extreme hatred before a service is even revealed. Pretty much consistent with every single Apple reveal and new product. Pathetic.

It's called the internet, welcome ;)

What else do you expect from nerds and sad old little trolls? Common sense :)?

Well, what kind of comments you expect when the page is "MacRumors"? We discuss about rumors, or would you prefer that the moderators delete every topic unless the subject of discussion is officially revealed by Apple and all details are 100% confirmed?

I'm curious to know how many people still purchase CDs. I haven't in at least 5 years.

I don't know where you live, buy stores in the UK are still full of CD's DVD's and more and more BluRay.

There are many many normal people who still buy CD's to enjoy in their home HiFi systems and to buy for others as gifts at Christmas and Birthdays.

This is huge, what a bargain price. Can't wait for this, it will be THE killer app for iPhone.

So you "discuss" the hypothetical service and come to the conclusion that it sucks by creating the cons in your heads. Interesting.

I still can't figure out what all the fuss is about. Music is already portable and stored locally without issue. How does this benefit me again? What do I gain from Apple streaming it to me? This would be important if HDD sizes were small and not able to hold large libraries. Fortunately, that's not the case.

As for movies and TV shows, iCloud could offer some benefits over straight streaming. I have a feeling iCloud will have some cool features not yet seen and those will be the show stoppers.

I agree, though one use i see is when you have a very big music library that won't fit on you iPod/iPhone/iPad or when you are at some party or when you forgot your music player at home, you can just log in to your iCloud account and stream that music. Other than that (for me) no cloud can be the real thing like having music on my device.

I still buy CDs as well - they're lossless, and I like the whole tactile package, artwork, etc. Although if anyone knows anywhere online which has a good range of legal lossless music, PM me!

I'm left wondering two things - if iCloud will only be for music, and what will happen to MobileMe? I don't want to have to change my @me.com address to an @icloud.com address. :p
