Everything is working here on my end, largely thanks to help from forum members getting me setup on godaddy (thank you!!), I just had one last question about rules, folders and push.

When I send TO my custom domain, the email clearly uses push as it populates on all of my devices quickly. However when I set up a separate folder, and a rule filtering all mails addressed to the custom domain to that folder, it seems like push doesn’t work. I send and nothing happens, even for hours and days. Once I manually open the folder on an iOS device, I then see the message download properly.

After I then removed the rule for the custom domain, push seemed to work again.

Has anyone else had problems with push and rules/folders, or any success with them? Thanks!

Do you have Push enabled for that folder on your devices? On iOS in Settings > Mail > Accounts > Data retrieval method > iCloud. There will be an option for what folders are checked with Push.

(I don't use English iOS so terms might vary slightly.)

Thank you so much! I didn’t realize this was an existing (and likely very old) feature in iOS. I appreciate it!

I have one of my "business" domains working perfectly. But, am having a problem with the second one. Years ago, it was used for a short time as an Apple ID. I've gone through the process to get it deleted, and it's gone and I cannot login as an Apple ID at all. However, when I try to add that address (ken@mydomain.com), I get the inbound verification email with a link on it, tap on that link and get this ...
Screen Shot 2021-09-01 at 3.10.11 PM.png

I tried skipping this address verification and I can setup the domain. But, when I try to add this address (ken@mydomain.com) it fails with a similar error.

Anyone have an idea how to resolve this or perhaps report it to Apple for assistance?

I rather like the way the other domain is working!!

Ken

So six days after adding my custom domain email, I can now send emails from this account on my iPhone and iPad. Nothing on iCloud Mail (beta) for now

(1) is it possible to have app/mail notifications just for emails that arrive from a particular email alias? Since it's not possible to separate emails into proper inboxes, at the very lease I'm hoping I can get notified only for emails coming into my primary email :|

(2) are you able to set server-side email forwards that go out to other addresses? e.g. an email that comes into one of the email aliases can be forwarded to my other address @gmail.com?

me too dang it... everything I try says that. Do we just have to wait? Is that the only option?
The question is it for everyone or based on the account. I added and removed two different domains several times each trying to get past the too many hops bug. It is possible that I exceeded some threshold.

I don’t know of any way around the error. We just have to wait on Apple to fix things.

I've had the same issues you do since adding my domain the first day it was available. My existing domain email address that was my Apple ID gets the error message from your screenshot when trying to add it. Changing my Apple ID did nothing. I wanted to use this so much I registered the .net version of my domain and it gets the error message of "There was a problem adding this email address. Try again later." The .net version was clearly never associated with my Apple ID so I'm at a loss of what else to try. I don't understand how this worked so easily for most people and others get nothing but various error messages. I did report the issues through Feedback Assistant. It now shows more than 10 similar reports so maybe it will get fixed eventually. I worry that those of us with issues will just be stuck with not being able to use the service.

Haha ok, today my first custom alias disappeared on all devices, sending via Webmail isn’t possible and results in an error (even it’s only there still selectable). All others ones are working fine

Moved a new domain after the old could only be added by family members and ended up for me in hop errors ...
In addition I changed the apple-id to a non generic address @domain.com
All except two are now working for me too ... to give an error trying to add (they seem to be stuck on an apple server with a removed domain) ...

One AppleID has now three domains with a total of seven alternate emails properly listed - and send/receive without hiccup

It looks like I can add my Apple ID (which is on my custom domain) with no issues, but on a few secondary domains that I've used as temporary Apple IDs in the past, I get the "There was a problem with adding this email address. Please try again later." message. I've tried this with a few addresses, and each Apple ID in question has either been closed down (properly, using the procedure on the website), or moved to a different email address.

I'm observing the same behaviour as others; if the address has somehow been linked to an Apple ID in the past, you can't add it. This doesn't seem to cause a problem for your current Apple ID though.

Weird, the first email address I added randomly stopped working for sending mail in the mail apps (I'm running betas) after working initially. I am still able to send email from it via the beta iCloud site though. I haven't changed anything.

I'll just chalk it up to a beta issue I guess.

Same here, except of one point - while it's still available in beta.icloud.com I'm unable to send mails from this alias - it just results in an error.

Looking at the report from mxtoolbox ping...

Firstly, I can’t get DKIM alignment. I believe this is because `sig1._domainkey` is a CNAME to `sig1.dkim.<yourdomain>.at.icloudmailadmin.com` and `sig1.dkim.<yourdomain>.at.icloudmailadmin.com` has no TXT record. E.g., `dig +short sig1.dkim.hespera.net.at.icloudmailadmin.com TXT`. It looks to me like something is broken on Apple’s side. When you setup the custom domain Apple should be creating a TXT record, but it isn’t 🤷🏼‍♂️

Secondly, DMARC compliancy... Apple doesn’t provide any setup instructions on how to make your domain compliant. I think you simply need an additional TXT record on a `_dmarc` host, something like `v=DMARC1; p=none; pct=100`. Since Apple doesn’t provide instructions on how to setup DMARC, I’m assuming it’s unnecessary.

Nothing has changed on my end. I still cannot receive mail without the sender receiving the “too many hops error.” Family accounts remain fine, or so it seems.

Yes these "at.icloudmailadmin.com" don't hold any TXT records just yet. However, all the e-mails that you send from your custom domain email get signed with DKIM from icloud.com -- therefore you still have a valid signature, it's just not aligned. In the future supposedly they will fix this.

Oh and DMARC, well you don't need it of course. But you can set it up however you like. Why not? Always good to get some reports. I have also set up MTA-STS and SMTP TLS reporting (in testing mode for now). Also works fine.

Good thing my search engine doesn’t have a search limit. I would have used it all up on all these acronyms. :p

I know just enough to get all the good green marks on sites like hardenize.com and then I'm happy :)

The problem is what you (and others) are trying to achieve is exactly the opposite of what's being offered here. What you're wanting is two distinct email accounts (i.e. different inboxes), and that's something that's already easily achievable just by having two email accounts set up in Mail.

This new functionality provides an alias, which exactly as the name suggests is just an alternative address for the same email account, the whole point being that by design, whether you use name@domain.com or name@icloud.com makes no difference whatsoever, the two inbound email addresses are fully interchangeable and you're working with a single account with a single inbox. It's the same as if I give my house a name: letters addressed to NightFox Towers still get delivered through the same letterbox as those addressed to 1 High Street and end up in the same pile on the hall floor. Sure, I can then sift through that pile of letters and sort them by how they were addressed (rules/folders) and when I send letters I can write either address on the top of them, but if I wanted a separate letterbox (inbox) them I'd need NightFox Towers to be a different house (email account).
