It looks like I can add my Apple ID (which is on my custom domain) with no issues, but on a few secondary domains that I've used as temporary Apple IDs in the past, I get the "There was a problem with adding this email address. Please try again later." message. I've tried this with a few addresses, and each Apple ID in question has either been closed down (properly, using the procedure on the website), or moved to a different email address.

I'm observing the same behaviour as others; if the address has somehow been linked to an Apple ID in the past, you can't add it. This doesn't seem to cause a problem for your current Apple ID though.
Yeah... I fully agree and observe the same behavior here.
I wonder if this is by design or will be changed / possible to have those "dead addresses" somehow be removed so that they can be used for the custom domain again.

I am still getting the hops error. Sometimes my emails are lost in the void. One thing is certain, I am not receiving any email to my address. My wife’s email that was set up through family sharing is sending and receiving mail perfectly fine however. Weird.
Same here. Only thing I can think of is she doesn’t have an @Mac alias and I do? She does have @me aliases though.

anyone able to setup iCloud custom email to google domain? my registrar is google domain!

I've been getting the too many hops error, so I thought I'd set up a new domain with a different ISP (GoDaddy) this morning to test it. I can't even seem to add it as a custom domain now - "there was a problem adding the domain, try later". Anybody seen this ? The first one added fine albeit with the too many hops issue.
(Incidentally GoDaddy are offering domains at £0.86 at the mo, one per customer in case anyone needs one)

took the plunge and moved my main email account to iCloud. The process was painless and so far working very well. I’m also saving some money in the process!
Interesting that with this feature and the fact that you can now receive iMessages and FaceTime calls with your custom domain, Apple, albeit a bit piecemeal, has created their competitor to Gsuite (or whatever its called these days) and Office365.

Talked to Apple Support today... it was just Level 1 - so certainly just a snapshot of the current policy. They confirmed again that there is no way to use an email address that has once belonged to an Apple ID (even though it has been deleted) for services like FaceTime, iMessage etc.

So I guess this will then also be valid for the Custom Domain Service. Custom Domain now also shows me an updated error message when I try to add an email adress that belonged to a former Apple ID "This address is in use by an Apple ID"....

Too bad.

I can't believe this will be a forever issue.

Yes. It’s been like that since over the weekend. I’m not sure if it is affecting everyone or just those of us who tried to add domains multiple times.

Everything is working here on my end, largely thanks to help from forum members getting me setup on godaddy (thank you!!), I just had one last question about rules, folders and push.

When I send TO my custom domain, the email clearly uses push as it populates on all of my devices quickly. However when I set up a separate folder, and a rule filtering all mails addressed to the custom domain to that folder, it seems like push doesn’t work. I send and nothing happens, even for hours and days. Once I manually open the folder on an iOS device, I then see the message download properly.

After I then removed the rule for the custom domain, push seemed to work again.

Has anyone else had problems with push and rules/folders, or any success with them? Thanks!

I am finally able to see my previously deleted and later re-added custom email domain alias in Settings. 👍

Same, but I’m still unable to send from it. Saving as draft fails and sending pops up an error: “Cannot send message - This message cannot be sent at this time. Try again later.”

Both of these functions work for me, but I must say that I re-added my domain before testing. So maybe try to re-add your domain.

By the way, has anyone else noticed that when setting a custom email domain as default "Send from" address and disabling/unchecking all the other email addresses, then Apple ID (@icloud.com) always gets enabled after a page refresh? Looks like a bug, because why would they allow us to disable/uncheck it otherwise..

I called apple support as well. The agent had no information about the beta however, he believed once an email was released there is a cooling off period but then it is released. May be 30 days? Take that for what its worth. I will be having my wife and kids remove the custom domain address from their icloud accounts then try to migrate in 35 days. See what happens. Maybe there will be more info by then

I was able to add my domains with no issues, however before I did anything like many of you my apple ID was using my custom email address before I migrated the domain to apple, so I removed it from my account before adding the domain. Now I want to put it back but am getting this error. I already created the email again on icloud and that was not an issue but now I cannot add it as my apple ID.

Any ideas?

Good news! As the beta has progressed, Apple has added automatic DNS configuration for many popular domain registrars. I just tried to set up an email I was unable to set up when the beta launched and instead of giving me DNS settings, a popup asked me to sign into my GoDaddy account. One click and it was set up! That's more like it!

PLUS ... I was able to add my old, inactive/closed "Apple ID" email now without a problem!! Yeah!!

Do you own the domain you're trying to add? and can you show us one example? Maybe one of us can help.
I definitely own the domains that I’ve tried. It looks like Apple is blocking me because I tried setting up the domains too many times when trying to work around the too many hops error.

There isn’t much to show. When clicking the continue button after entering the domain you get the error. “There was a problem adding this domain. Try again later.”
