Why? Drop box is free and the photos are what eats up the space on iCloud. I know everyone is on the OP’s case and I am shocked at how many people have said well I just pay the x per month for more storage it’s no big deal. Lmao...how many iPhones do you suspect are worldwide?? Just think of the money Apple would make if everyone paid a one time fee of a buck. Now think of the money they are actually making off this service. The minions will follow though. Not this one they ain’t getting a penny extra from me.
Huh? Dropbox only offers 2GB free and recently imposed a 3-device limit on the free tier. Sure, you can get more via referrals but that's harder now since it seems almost everyone has a Dropbox account already.

Dropbox is also on the more expensive side. Their lowest paid plan is $12/mo for 2TB (actually used to be $100/yr for 50GB) and they don't offer family plans. On iCloud, individual plans start at 50GB/$0.99 and family plans start at 200GB/$2.99 (likely sufficient for most).

This is why we use iCloud for photos instead of Dropbox. I have a paid Dropbox account for myself (of which I only use 15GB ) but it's not a workable solution for families looking to keep their data separate.

Dropbox is free, but only gives you 2GB. Suddenly Apple seems more generous...

Yes, the 3 device limit is really annoying. I like Dropbox and I have accumulated quite a bit of referrals from way back when so I have quite a bit of space, but the sudden 3 device limit for free tier is really limiting the use of the service in the age of multiple devices (laptops, phones, tablets, etc). Really disappointed as there are many apps that I use that is tied to dropbox.

Now I'm slowly migrating bit by bit to OneDrive. It's not as fast as dropbox, but I'm paying for Office 365 anyway and has 1TB of OneDrive.

Mine is 3gb free. There are enough services out there to store your photos for free. I would sign up for others (flikr example) if I run out of space on drop box. Or I would just upload them to my computer. Just saying there is no point to pay for web storage for me as I will never have enough stuff for more than one or two free accounts

Sure, but the question for me is how is that free service earning money and how long will they be around? I find uploading content is often a hassle particularly since home broadband upload speeds are often way lower than downloads (mine is 200 down/10 up).

For me, iCloud is worth the low asking price for the convenience, safety net, relative privacy and stability it provides.

That's one thing I wish iCloud would do is discounted annual iike $9,99/yr for 50GB.

Given Dropbox was $100/yr for 50GB back when iCloud was $12/yr for 20GB (or was it 25?), I can live with Apple not offering discounts.
I could even live without a discount but have annual or even 2yr lump payments. Maybe even have it do it like AC+. You can choose either lump or monthly payments.

What I do is buy iTunes gift cards so I don't to see all these small charges on the credit card statement.

I do the same thing for Amazon Kindle.

I started using iCloud with iOS5 back in December 2011 and I started with Dropbox in 2009.

In 2012 when I got my first full purchase iPhone (iPhone 5) I discovered that Apple no longer allowed the iPhone to sync with my PowerPC based Macs. So, alternative services and jailbreaking became my new reality.

I use Google for contacts, IMAP for mail, Dropbox for photos and iCloud for backups. It's easy to decide which data you want to keep in iCloud. Just find the apps you don't want data backed up for and flip the toggle.

I've got six iPhones, an iPad, one PC and three Macs that use iCloud. All of them use the free 5GB allotment and none of them are anywhere near the storage limit. I just don't think that there's anything of value in backing up app data.

With Dropbox, I managed to get myself up to 7GB before springing for their 2TB option. About a month afterwards they added 1TB to my allotment so I have 3TB of storage, most of which is used for something else and not photos.

The photos I do take dump right into Dropbox - which means they go direct to my Macs. Periodically I dump the Camera Uploads folder into my Mac's Photos folder and update Lightroom.

All of this has been an easy and established system for me, so whatever Apple charges is irrelevant to me because additional iCloud storage isn't necessary. Finally, as I've said many times before there is nothing on my phone that is irreplaceable. Everything I value is backed up to my Macs, which is why I make frequent backups of THOSE.

Any data I lost on my iPhone/iPad could be recreated easily because of this.

I do make one exception and pay Google $1.99 a month for their storage, but that's because our primary phones are Pixels now and they don't offer free iCloud like service. It's used for backups.

I get OP's point, but sheesh. Take some initiative. iCloud is convenient for a lot of people who don't want to be bothered and it's a good service. But iCloud is not the be all, end all of things. It's great to have other options.

All of my pictures are backed up on multiple hdds. I just use iCloud for iPhone backups, because when you have over 100gb of pics, 5gb fill up pretty quick. Drop box.. lol. Anywhoo, I don’t see any advertising at all on my phone for the service, and I’ve been a customer since 2012. Come to think of it, I think I preferred the old iCloud, if anyone remembers that.

Yes, I remember that. That is when I discovered that syncing contacts between a device and a Mac was one way. I had a 3GS on iOS 5 and I could never get a sync working between Entourage 2008, Address Book and the phone.

That's when I switched to Google Contacts which works on almost any device.

You'll either need to buy more storage space or you will need to manage the data yourself using storage you previous bought like hard drives via iTunes or even free/trial services like Google Photos or other cloud storage services.

The fact is YOUR data filled the space. No different then if YOUR data filled a computers hard drive. Solutions are very simple, pay for convenience or use free services that can offer the space for YOUR data and manage it yourself. Or of course stop using so much data, it is YOUR data after all, your FREE iCloud isn't full of anyone else's stuff.

You get alerted to low storage well in advance because depending on your iCloud settings and devices you can stop receiving messages, photos won't be sync, documents won't transfer, back ups will be uselessly out of date, etc etc.

bro I want to use the free 5 gb i have, thats it. WHO the **** said i need to use the rest? THE **** is the point of FREE 5GB if you are going to have a damn pop up every 5 seconds?

Thats like having a "you have a free upgrade so upgrade your phone now" pop up every damn second and it wont go away UNLESS you upgrade your damn phone. its a ****ing joke.

‘if it’s full it’s full of material you put there.
With the time and frustration put into this post, you could easily have gone into your iCloud files and culled the junk that’s probably no longer needed.

Not sure what you mean by the old iCloud.

How is iCloud involved when I try to sync data from a Mac to a device? That sounds as if it was solely handled by itunes.

Well I agree it's pretty annoying and Apple should not implement it this way. It feels very Microsoft-like of the 90s. But how I solved it is to just delete all my photos from the iCloud and switch off the photo sync. If you keep the sync on it'll start to annoy you again cause every ****in photo you ever saved ends up there.

But with that workaround, you can use all other features of iCloud except the photos with 5GB...

This isn't directed at you, but it's only annoying if you don't take steps to correct it. It's a warning, like a bank telling you that you're overdrawn - only in this case you're going to lose data if your device fails. Some people want their cake… but they don't want to learn how to make it - or to pay for it. People would lose their minds if one of their precious pictures was lost because it wan't backed up, but don't want to take any steps to prevent it. Apple can only wipe your ass so much, people. Either learn how to manage iCloud, or pay the 99¢ a month.

wouldn't you simply turn off automatic updates?
Turning off automatic update is not the same thing as turning off update entirely, which allows user to use whatever version of software they choose, assuming all responsibilities.

This thread is hilarious... Thanks OP because this is the laugh I needed in these crazy times!

If you really dislike iCloud you can go old school and back up your iPhone to a Mac or PC. I didn't read all six pages so if this was already suggested then sorry.

I stopped using iCloud years ago when the iPhone 4 was new. I kept getting my wife’s pictures and contacts and it was driving me crazy. Fast forward to now and I swear by iCloud now after having 10 years of memories lost because the backup didn’t work before I upgraded my phone that was on a lease plan. I pay for the 50GB plan which is $1.49 in Australia. Not quite using half the storage yet but I like having the safety of the extra storage. Also pay a monthly subscription to Apple Music $11.99AUD.

How the hell do you turn this **** off? BRO I DON'T NEED A REMINDER EVERY DAY!!!!!!!!!!! ITS SO DAMN ANNOYING!

Everyday would be nice. Sometimes I'll get them every 5-10 seconds unless I go into settings and tap "OK." Only for the message to pop up again a few minutes later. The worst is when I am doing work on the phone and it pops up just as I was tapping the screen and messes me up.

IT POPS UP ON LOCK SCREEN, ON EVERY UNLOCK, ON EVERY APP. JEEZ YOU THIRSTY ASS APPLE BRO IF I WANT IT ILL UPGRADE IT!

It sounds to me that the best solution for you is to go to Android!

I hear you, that popup sounds irritating. But if you buy a $1000 phone, is it that big a deal to spend an extra few bucks a month to back up all your stuff ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If I buy a 1tb device is it a big deal to supply 1tb cloud? I think you’ve more than paid for it.
