Hi,
new to the forums... have been a reader only for quite some time :).
I have set up the iCloud+ custom domain feature this morning. So far, I can register custom domain emails and receive messages sent to them.

As @slyronit pointed out, they are not reliably added to "send as" though.

However, I have one really large problem. My "main" email that I want to add is rejected as "in use by other Apple ID".

I had set up this email as a backup email ages ago but the Apple ID associated to it has been deleted more than a year ago. So there is no way right now to find where this email address might by linked to some Apple ID.... I have no clue (tried the "look for your Apple ID via email feature).

Any ideas how to solve that?

Thx
Chris

I think that this a more or less a bug within the workflow that didn't get covered correctly and should be reported. Keep in mind, everything is beta... But "used by other Apple ID" sounds more like you have created a Apple Account with this email address (not as @iCloud.com) and therefore this is blocked. Currently my AppleID is "foo@bar.com" and added within this account the domain "bar.com" and the new alias "foo". So my AppleID is equal to my used email on iCloud mail.

My problem is that one of my most used aliases can not be created and results in "There's a problem. Please try again later".

Yeah... my error message now changed to the same one you encounter... it's the most important alias for me, so unfortunately, custom domain is kind of worthless for me right now ;-).
Well, it's a beta.

I came across the exact same problem. Apparently Apple IDs deleted once can never be used as emails/aliases anymore. You should have changed your apple ID to @icloud.com before deleting it, then you would have been able to use this custom domain as an alias.

Google is having kind of the same thing... address ever used and deleted can't be re-used. Seems like Apple is doing the same thing here.
Bug or feature?

This behavior will limit the feature of "custom domain" for quite a lot of users I guess.

Is a feature. I opened a ticket with Apple and they confirmed that I can never re-use the same ID again. Mine was mail@contoso.com and I deleted this apple ID. Now I can add sly@contoso.com as an alias, but not mail@contoso.com.

On the other hand, I also had an apple id with sly@contoso.com, but I changed the ID to sly@icloud.com and removed all traces of sly@contoso.com from my account and after deleting it, I could re-use sly@contoso.com as a new Apple ID.

If anyone finds a feedback link for this, let me know. I will be happy to report all the bugs I have found till now.

Well I guess the problem exists only if you do not remove all traces of the email you wanna re-use and then delete the account...

Had anybody the chance to check the workflow for family members?
Yes. If you choose the "family" option, all family members get an email notification that they can create email addresses with that domain and the email redirects them to the iCloud beta settings page. In the settings page, the domain already exists, the family member just has to add an email.

I’m not receiving my confirmation emails. (Fastmail with my own domain)
There's a way around this. Go to appleid.apple.com and in your list of emails, add any email from this domain. It will send a confirmation mail add add this email to your list of emails. Now when to register the domain via iClown, it will not ask for the confirmation email.

Works well. Easy to setup if you’ve done this kind of thing before. Probably not too tough regardless. I’m able to send and receive.

I don’t see a “catch all” feature. Wonder if that will come. I know I can add aliases but I utilized catch all with GSuite.

Thank you. I tried this and I thought it had worked, but it duplicated the email addresses (1 verified and 1 pending ). When I tried to remove the pending one it said if I removed it I wouldn’t be able to add it again (as mentioned above by other posters) so I was stuck.

I cancelled and started afresh and now the workaround doesn’t work.

I could setup the domain (MX, CNAME etc.)... sending to a registered email works just fine.
What I just can't get to work is "sending as" this email... I can't find a way to add this address to "send as" in my iCloud Mail account.

Trying add my domain and its kind of weird. If I understead it correctly, I need to have already working mail with my domain because they send confirmation on it.
I own this domain but mails not working with it. Other services checking this with some DNS records...

Yeah, it's a little bit strange right now... especially since there has to be a process of how to change emails AFTER you have registered the domain with iCloud. But it's still beta!

I tried again from scratch and this time it worked. Probably glitchy because it’s beta. I’m trying it with a secondary email to see how it goes before I switch my main email account.

Also, (at least for now), it seems you're limited to 3 email addresses per domain.

Argh, why did they have to do that? :)

I have a couple of different aliases depending on which type of person/organisation I give my email address to … not that many but unfortunately more than 3 so this is a showstopper for me!

Yeah... and to add insult to injury, it looks like plus addressing doesn't work with custom domains either 😕

In fact, anything plus-addressed to a custom domain seems to just vanish. The iCloud SMTP servers will receive them with the standard "250 OK" response, as opposed to bouncing them with a 550 as unknown addresses, but they never seem to actually arrive in the destination mailbox.

Since this does work with iCloud.com addresses and custom ones are being accepted, however, hopefully this is just a temporary limitation in the beta that will get sorted out later.
