id Software has launched its highly-anticipated RAGE first-person shooter for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. A scaled-down version of the forthcoming game scheduled for release in late 2011 on PC/Mac and console platforms, the iOS version of RAGE is known as Mutant Bash TV! and offers a storyline in which the player participates in a post-apocalyptic game show to battle against mutants.
RAGE is available in two universal versions, a standard version priced at $0.99 and RAGE HD priced at $1.99 and offering higher-resolution graphics for the iPad, iPhone 4, and fourth-generation iPod touch.

id's John Carmack teased RAGE for iOS back in August at QuakeCon 2010, showing a demo of the game running at 60 frames per second. Our friends over at TouchArcade were able to get their hands on a prerelease version of RAGE for iOS earlier this month and offered an overview of the gameplay and impressive graphics included on the sample levels.

Loving this game. The controls are great. So are the graphics (obviously).

Quite large files. The standard is 537 MB and the HD version weighs in at 743 MB

It's a fantastic game that looks amazing but am I the only one having frame rate issues? It seems to freeze up quite a lot for me

It looks incredible. The horizontal controls are a bit iffy at times, but overall it's an amazing game. Buy it just for the iCandy.

I am wondering if this is just an introductory price, or they plan to keep it around this (cheap IMHO) price.

I wasted a dollar on the standard version because I assumed HD meant for iPad only.

    Stupid me!

    Game is surprisingly good.

So is the HD version on iPhone(4) better than the standard version? Or is there only a benefit on iPad? The screenshots look marginally better on the HD version on the iPhone screen, but that could be irrelevant.

    Imagine..... Just Imagine

Imagine, when this game comes to the Mac App Store and the flock of gamers download it.

id is a truly dedicated Apple development company.

Can't wait for the Mac App Store and the new Gold Rush of users developers will cater towards.

Come on its $.99/$1.99. Cheaper than a big mac for a good game :D

I would imagine the HD version looks much better than the standard on the iP4 due to the higher res screen

Agreed. However if BoxWave's keyboard add-on for the iPhone 4 that ships next month is decently reviewed, there is no reason why they couldn't make an add-on controller. I just am not sure of there are APIs that are available in the SDK that could allow an add-on controller.

I'd love to play the game, but the on-rails hinders my decision.

    Wirelessly posted (Iphone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Looks awesome. I'm going to wait and see what other people have to say before I buy it. Does it have multiplayer?

From looking at the early iTunes reviews (uk store) everyone is raving about it.

Strategy and turn based games would fit better with touch controls on such a small screen. A FPS game? Uh. I don't see the point.
