The Mac App Store is gonna be huge! This is gonna make the Mac even more wanted as a PC.

This game is fantastic. Don't let the fact that it's on rails keep you from downloading. Gameplay is great and the graphics are obviously beautiful. It's a great time to be an iOS gamer with RAGE, Infinity Blade, and Aralon all coming within the next few months. And according to Id, they plan on doing at least one and maybe two more RAGE games before they release the console game next fall. At $1.99, you can't pass up this game.

This game is still better than about 60% of what passes for PSP games today for 20- 40 bucks. I never thought the Iphone/Touch would make a viable handheld platform but it has.

Of course the price is unbeatable, but I think that Rage missed a great opportunity here. They could produce the best game for the iPad. The graphics are great but there is too much repeating of the same scenery. What bothers me is the gameplay. Why does our character moves automatically? Why can't I control my character manually? This is a big issue and takes a lot of the fun away.
Another issue is that this game is really short. I have completed the first two levels in 10 minutes, with one level to go...
As I said, the price is right, and it is also a great way to show off the capabilities of the iPad, but I am not sure I am keeping it after I finish the last level (in the next ten minutes...).

Just make the BIG mistake of buying this.

Don't get me wrong, it looks nice.

But jeezzzz, talk about on rails.

I've never in my life played this type of game where you don't even control your character movements.

It's like you a tied to a trolley and someone is wheeling you around, stopping every now and again to shoot something, then wheeling you onto the next bit.

Terrible terrible idea.

Total waste of money for me. Who ever thought making it like this should be shot. If only I could get a refund :(

Pretty graphics does not make a good game.

Hey, just make the gun fire automatically as well and I could just watch it play itself !!!!

There is one thing that you have to take into account here:

Will the Mac grow up to support the best games out there, on the store?

Or will the games be poor to support what Mac's can do?

I could not think of anything sadder and more embaressing than a fully grown Mac playing iOS type games meant for low power devices.

It does look amazingly good, as does Epic's Citadel. Problem is these games (ignoring Citadel because it's just a tech demo) lack the depth of 60% of PSP games. This game boils down to a rail shooter because the controls are way too simplified.
I can't wait to see how the App store matures in a few years, beyond games that equate to nothing but shallow eye candy.

Go tell John Carmack he sucks at making games.

Downloaded earlier today and have played for about an hour. It’s a fantastic game: great value for money, great graphics and great gameplay.

IMO it’s all the better because it's on rails. I've struggled with other FPS games on iOS in the past, as a touchscreen just isn’t that great for aiming and moving at the same time.

Believe me. I have held John Carmack up as an example as one of the very best game programmers in the world.

I in no doubt doubt his technical ability.

However due to Apple not making available a Bluetooth wireless controller (which they could release at any time if they wished) ID have chosen to put this on rails as a touch screen is a terrible control system for this type of game.

Only problem being they have replaces one type of terrible with another type of terrible.

that's not to say it's not "Technically" impressive and something to show off to your mates with. It's just a terrible idea for a game control method.

This game kicks butt.....graphics are stunning and I kinda like the simplified controls and rail movement. $1.99 for the HD version is the deal of a lifetime. I bet they raise the price soon.

The controls for Wolfenstein were fine because you only have to aim side to side but I agree that a touchscreen sucks for controlling a FPS. That being said I've enjoyed the game. My biggest grip isn't that it's on rails it's that it's too short. But it's only $2 (or $1 if you get the non HD version) so I guess I can't complain too much.

I'm unsure if I should pick up the standard or HD version. I currently use a 3GS but plan on getting a 4th gen iPod touch this summer. Would spending the extra dollar be worth it in the long run? (is it a game you'd play more than a few months)

A few months? Are you kidding? This game lasts an hour at a maximum...i finished it in 30 minutes.

Looks pretty good, but controls in iPhone games have been a bit lacking for my taste. But on rails would eliminate the need for movement controls so that could definitely simplify things and eliminate some frustration.

Too bad the game is THAT short though. Maybe there will be future updates to add levels or maps or something?

I have really enjoyed playing this and have a couple of things to both say and echo. The on-rails system is not what is expected of shooting games today, but whether it was genuinely good or I'm clouded by nostalgia, I really enjoyed it and think it worked very well on the platform. Also, it is incredibly short, which leaves the price point looking spot on. Sure, it's cheap for the visuals, but in terms of gameplay, there's very little to it. Finally, this game is pretty. Absolutely gorgeous in fact. Certainly the nicest looking game on the App Store at present.

Overall I'm impressed with the technology, but the delivery still needs a little more work. Gameplay could have been made more robust, but I suppose at this stage of the App Store we're still seeing these 'proof of concept' type games which really show off the hardware. Which this does --- perfectly.

This is a lot better than what I expected. It's fast and crazy, but I think they did a good job for such a cheap price. It's kind of like an advanced on-rails shooter. More involved than ones I've seen in the past. It's like taking time crisis a few steps further and mixing it with the Gears of War reloading system. Though this time, with the timed reloads doubling your bullet damage. The GOW reload system was a mini game in itself, so I find this quite enjoyable. I'll have to go back to try to get more targets and maybe try for the best play through on the hard mode.

I found the controls too annoying to take the game seriously.

Aiming is too difficult, so you end up taking far more damage than you would if using a keyboard/mouse or controller.

It's an adjustment, but it can be done. If you're used to mouse and keyboard, anything else is going to take adjustment. It's good enough and adjustable enough for me to take on the harder difficulties. Weapon, reload, and dodge management are almost more important than aim, here. The presentation is crazy good, though. I guess I should expect that from Id. I like the announcer.

This was horrible. Total waste of 2 bucks. The graphics aren't even as impressive as Epic Citadel, and I would say the gameplay isn't much better either. At least in Citadel you could walk around...
