So is the HD version on iPhone(4) better than the standard version? Or is there only a benefit on iPad? The screenshots look marginally better on the HD version on the iPhone screen, but that could be irrelevant.

I read on another forum from John C himself (presumably) that they wanted the HD version for only the iPad and iP4, but they were unable to restrict it from the 3GS. The 3GS suffers a performance penalty in the HD version, so it must be pushing more graphically even on the phones.

FYI - Most of the App size appears to be from the pre-rendered videos, not the actual game play.

The iOS game seems like a teaser for the full Rage coming out next year, hence the cheap price.
Game play is essentially the same as Doom Resurrection, but w/o the story.

BTW - While it's not as good as Rage, Doom still looks very good. especially on the RD iPhone4. Personally I prefer the slightly floating recital used in Doom.

Strategy and turn based games would fit better with touch controls on such a small screen. A FPS game? Uh. I don't see the point.

It works very well.

It's no different than a console FPS. Except in this you dont' have to worry about moving around.

Imagine, when this game comes to the Mac App Store and the flock of gamers download it.

id is a truly dedicated Apple development company.

Can't wait for the Mac App Store and the new Gold Rush of users developers will cater towards.

A truly dedicated Apple development company? Have you ever read an interview with John Carmack?

Considering id software also does Linux ports of their games and have done so for years, there's nothing pivotal about this at all. id just does ports of their games to every OS imaginable, that's the way they roll, it's nothing special.

HD vs Non-HD For 3GS

Any disadvantage to getting the HD version for the 3GS? If not, I'd like to get the HD version so I have it at a decent price for my next iPhone!

I like it, but I miss the free-walking option common in FPS'es. This game just makes you walk a fixed path after killing all the enemies in a certain area, which feels very scripted.

It's good but I think FPS'es on iOS have a long way to go before becoming a serious competitor to consoles.

Its believed that the HD version will lag on the 3GS.

all i saw was "rails shooter" .... another id "FPS" on RAILS, just like Doom.

forcing the player to stay on rails obviously makes the whole thing much, much easier to code i'm sure.

but... it's just not the same thing as a real fps. sigh.

ah yeah, all that pesky "gameplay" and "exploration" ... sure glad i don't have to "worry" about all that stuff.

coming soon... Grand Theft Auto ... on rails! a free-range, open sandbox of a world... where you have to follow a single predetermined path. awesome.

you know the demo basically just plays itself... maybe that's more your speed, hm?

Gamers don't "worry" about moving around. It's part of the experience. It's strange to associate the word "worry" when playing a game. It must be a Apple phenomena.

I just tried this out briefly and I am very impressed with the graphics.

The gameplay seems to be fun, although I have not played it long enough to really evaluate this yet.

From a technical standpoint, it seems like all the fancy lighting and shading techniques are pre-rendered into the textures to make this look so good. A couple tricks to figure out proper model lighting and how the tessellated polygonal models will map the normals and you end up with something pretty special. I'm sure theres more in there, but the trick is to NOT do all the bells and whistles in real time. This is why the download is so large.

This is excellent news, as two years ago I heard news that ID were unsure if Rage would even be put on the Mac platform.

Simply. Can't. Wait.

Interesting game. It's on rails, but I have to admit, that price is incredible. Any decent shooter, on rails or not, would be a steal at that price. Just happens that this has eyecandy to go with it. That file size is huge, though. I guess it's packed with content or real high quality textures and sound.

Not as far as I can tell

Been playing the HD version on my 3Gs and it has been running beautifully. Only slow downs occur (ever so slightly) when I get an email or other background process. I bet if you were to turn on airplane mode it would be butter.

id has done an amazing job. The future of gaming is now here on iOS. No excuse not to have great graphics and gameplay...

DOWNLOADING!!!

I will play this at night in the bed getting all scared and excited.

YEAH

I completely agree with you. Not a fan of rails-shooters, but the problem isn't the code. There's no way to implement good fps controls on the iPhone. Wolf3D worked because there isn't a concept of looking up and down, and I would say even than the controls were really bad.

I have to say though that this is a really fun game for a rails shooter. It works well for me, so this is definitely the way to go on a cell phone game.
