Not necessarily true. If the hardware is not updated, then not all of the capabilities of iOS6 will be available on the Touch. As such, the performance will be as good, if not better, than how iOS5 runs (assuming iOS6 includes additional optimization beyond 5).

My 4th Gen iPod Touch started out with iOS 4. And performance improved with each subsequent iOS update.

In my experiences, I have not seen the iPod Touch perform noticeably worse than the same app on the iPhone 4. But I have seen poorly written apps have poor performance and crash on the Touch (that worked acceptably on the iPhone).

FYI: My experiences do not negate yours if you experienced something different.
There is a thread in this very forum where people complain about how slow the Touch has become with iOS5. Some apps like Twtter and Facebook take forever to load for me. I doubt iOS6 is going to fix any of that.

In terms of specs, the Nexus 7 has well over 4x the CPU power (actually probably something like EIGHT TIMES the CPU power) and 4x the RAM too...but it presumably doesn't fit in a pocket, and for now at least has a huge disadvantage with podcast support (not sure if that'll continue to be true with all the changes Apple's doing though...)

It fits in mine :D

I would be quite pissed off. I know that the iPhone and iPad draw in more sales than the iPod touch, but why not update all three? Especially since the iPod touch 4G is two years old now and many users are complaining of iOS 5 not working on their iPod touch 4G (it works fine on my iPod touch 3G), a hardware update is badly needed. There was a one year gap between the releases of the iPad 2 & iPad 3 and the iPhone 4 & iPhone 4S, but there is a two year gap between the iPod touch 4G and iPod touch 5G. I think we will be seeing the iPod touch 5G though.

I'd imagine that if Apple does in fact change the screen size of the iPhone, they will most likely release a matching iPod Touch, especially if there is a change in aspect ratio. I can imagine that once that new ratio has become the norm, there won't be many app developers continuing to write apps using the original ratio, and that would mean that the 4G would be left in the dust. So if there is a change to the ratio, I think Apple would almost certainly change the touch to match, but I don't think they'll necessarily release a new one until then.

I hope they don't change the aspect ratio. That would pretty much mean no more new apps for ANY of the devices with the current aspect ratio. I know all the rumours are calling for a longer screen, but I don't see why that's necessary. But I'm not Apple either. If the majority wants a larger screen, they'll get one.

that doesnt mean there wont be any new apps for the older devices. Ipad and the iphone have different aspect ratios and the ipad can run iphone apps. I believe the ipad is 4/3 and the iphone is 3/2.

Also look at android! there are many different aspect ratios there.

If by content, you mean, will I buy one anyway...NO. Paying full price for tech that is 2 generations old is bleeping dumb. Soon it will be two years since the TOUCH was updated(yes I remember the White Ordeal). I don't need one this year but if it's a whopper of an upgrade with little or no price increase, I may sell my iPT4 and get it. BUT, only after I see some quality reviews and a tear down. Specifically, I'd want to know how much RAM is in the device ...and of course the other specs too.

I'll bet 5 bucks the amount of RAM will be 512MB.
