If I take out a contract then I keep the phone for as long as the contract and then give the phone to a relative. People who are gullible enough to waste money buying themselves out of a contract early because they ‘need’ a shiny now phone deserve to be ripped off if say. I’ve never owned a phone that I didn’t think was good enough for 2 years of use and would get very bored upgrading annually.

When it use to be the same monthly cost to get a new one it was worth it. One year I think for the 6s it was cheaper than the 6. That is no longer the case. Well that is till this year, Could be the same.

And this whole 2 year thing started with the phone company’s and contracts. 2 year subsidized. These phones should be able to last 4. Although I suspect price is making the avg 3-4 now.

The subsidising I’ve seen in the States was a lot more generous than over here, we’ve always paid in full for mobile phones with the handset cost factored in. You guys were paying $200 for iPhones when they first launched, wow they were £500+ here!

I think most phones do last 4 years plus. My iPhone 6 is still going strong with the person I gave it to and it is a launch day 2014 one. Price is indeed pushing people to keep phones longer and is driving the mid tier market towards the mainstream as evident.

Dang $500! We only had to pay $200 plus tax and sign a 2 year contract. Hence the 2 years came into play! But that was when the phones were like $450. Smart by carriers to say no more since phone prices are more than double that. Ya I think it would be better if they came out with new phones every 2 years so they can actually make each release worth a damn.

Apple needs to get into the mid tier market for sure.

Although here in the UK I’m always surprised by the number of people who will keep their iPhone after the contract end date and yet keep paying the original contract price without looking for a new contract, sim only deal etc. When asked why the answer is usually along the lines of - “can’t be bothered to look for a better deal”.

I know one person who has still got a launch day iPhone 6 and is still paying the original contract price even though the contract ended over 2 yrs ago. Of course this means that they’ve basically paid for the cost of the iPhone 6 more than twice over, probably about 3 times over. However, when I ask why they don’t upgrade their answer is “cost of the new iPhones”. Go figure!

I’ve known a few people like that, my mam for one. She paid an extra year on her iPhone 6S at £40 p/m. I went mad. Quite a few of mine and my wife’s friends have gone sim only now though with iPhone 7’s and it’s becoming quite popular of late. Deals for only £8-10 a month with an iPhone that is still going strong, you can’t really fault.

Reduced margins will hurt investors and the share price, it will hurt employees with stock, and it will hurt those who are rewarded bonuses based on the performance of stock. Apple will not be going down that road.

The investor part in your quote, Believe it or not, is actually crucial. Even when Tim Cook had deliver a letter to investors back in January, he had to explain the Companies standpoint financially where they were with the decline with the iPhone, if you’re an investor with Apple, you need to be ‘in the know’ on a lot of things, and the companies interest financially very much involves investors commitment.

I do get the impression investors put far too much pressure on due to past success and an established greed. Sometimes companies have to take a slight financial hit in order to secure long term interest and Apple seem to be raising prices to plug the gap rather than trying to tempt consumers to want to buy their new iPhones.

terrifs could be in place by June 24th, since they started the approval process.

1.Do you think Apple would pass on the increase to us to offset?
2. Would you still buy iPhones if prices went up by $150/$200?
3. Do you think they will just eat the difference and not pass it on to us?
4. If they did pass on the increase would that see iPhone demand fall beyond repair?

1. Of course.
2. No.
3. Nada
4. Who knows?

2. Im sticking to my 8 for a few more years. Then, time will tell.
3. No
4. Hopefully

I would not stop buying iPhones but, I might not upgrade every year as I do now.

Wait, they are still paying for the phone? So after the 2 years their bill doesn’t go down cause they paid off the phone or they make you change ur own contract after 2 years and some people are just too lazy to do so?

Yep, still paying for the phone. In the UK, after the agreed end date of the contract, it’s up to the customer to cancel or replace with another contract. They are just too lazy or actually do not realise that as part of the contract they are paying off the phone. I actually tried to explain this to one friend who didn’t understand or (just as likely) would not accept that she was being ripped off.

Yeah it’s something i had to explain to my mum luckily now she upgrades every two years to avoid paying more for the same phone she’s already paid for.

1. Absolutely! Apple always does this with currency conversion fluctuations so there is no doubt they’ll not pass on the tariff.
2. No. At $1200CAN for XS/64GB hell no. If Qualcomm chips for modems within I’d consider but no. Other than camera & storage ($500+ for 512GB) there is no difference nor advantage to the features in iOS nor in operation of the device. No incentive nor real push for me to go from the 8 to the XS vs the X slightly used.
3. Yes. Considering the past 3Qtr revenues I think Apple will do so with less impact:
Apple iPhone upgrade program Will be offered in more countries as well as better incentives for trade in to upgrade. There is a lot of materials Apple can recycle and use for making older models at cheaper price within India or elsewhere. As well for other products.
Furthermore Apple will work better with international carriers for HUP prices on contract to be better subsidized (like they were prior to the X launch). The Xr is a dogs meal and will show it’s less than ideal components very soon.
4. Yes. Price will heavily affect demand and upgrade cycles even further! You may see Apple’s Installed user base begin to drop for Android phones. Many of the competition are getting better at warranty support. Also I feel a LOT of iOS users may feel left behind or restricted from real feature advances. Conjecture in my thoughts here but going by what I’m reading in threads. AppleTV+ doesn’t guarantee keeping ppl on iOS nor even AppleTV (in fact when was the last time that product was upgraded?)

Apples services strategy seems to focus less on devices they make vs enticing other platform users to use their recently announced services. Forcing AppleCare+ in 30days of owning an iPhone doesn’t help either but that’s not impacting device sales just ensuring a services uptick.

When existing platform membership falls and is consistently then you’ll see their boasting drop and hubris with common sense take over at the next iPhone intro whenever this all comes to fruition. A delay in release schedule to accommodate price drop will then occur.

It’s no secret 2mths before iPhone announcements sales begin to significantly drop in the past. Yet if sales of units and their revenues also drop accordingly and significantly we the buyer may aactually influence cook and team to come down to earth.

lol no.

I'm already at the point where I've decided to run with my iPhone X until it dies. When the time comes I'll look at alternatives if Apple chooses to "enrich" us with even higher prices.

I think more and more folks are doing what I did...keeping their devices longer and longer avoiding the annual payment tribute to Apple and the service providers. A few months ago I traded in my iPhone6 for an...wait for it...iPhone7. Couldn’t be happier with the increased processor, a little put off by the lack of headphone jack, didn’t need facial recognition or whatever specs the camera du jour has, and going from 16GB to twice that has done nothing for me. Even the case I used for the 6 fits the 7 so all good. I also paid for the 7 upfront so no add-ons from the service provider.

I may be a rare buyer yet in my thinking, but I do see more and more “elderly” iPhone models around, or maybe I’m just more sensitive to them.

They were exempt in the first round of 10% tariffs. More than likely the same will continue.

Most of my friends and people I know have the 6/6s/7. I use to rag on them for having such old devices. Now I just call them smart. Lol

The companies will soon have to inform customers when their contracts are about to end and offer them the best alternative deals, including those currently only on offer to new customers.

So your saying with all the billions they “already” make, and already being the most expensive smartphone out there without arguably being the best. You would happily pay it?!
You totally miss the point that if a tariff in imposed on electronics or specifically cell phones, it will imposed on ALL cellphones. Apple will be affected, but also, Samsung, LG, etc. The tariffs will also apply to Android phones, not just Apple.

There are plenty of people like myself with good jobs, home owners with two car families who have a simple phone contract. Is it some kind of stigma outside of Europe or something? Paying £30 a month for the use of a phone and plan is hardly a sign someone is living beyond their means.

This. I could buy the phone outright but I like the convenience of upgrading with the iPhone upgrade program.

I get that, but all those other company’s aren’t selling the most expensive phone.
