I don't like the OP's home screen pic.

I like the dock and the first page in IOS as far as prioritizing my common apps to go through.

Having 9 applications blaring content at me on the home screen does not seem attractive.

My only problem with iOS notifications is recent and it is that with foldered apps you don't know which app is sending the notification.

I was just googling images of tablet interfaces and I ran across this little number:
Image

How can that be something that's not welcomed? You have your basic info, your grid layout is still there and certain widgets like recent mail, twitter, weather.
and if you look closely, you can see there's room for notifications at the top

What happens when you turn it from landscape to portrait? That's the kind of things that mockups don't consider, but Apple does.

that looks pretty cool.

the irony with all this is if iOS5 does add widgets (apple of course wouldn't deign to be seen as following in other's footsteps, so i'm sure they'll come up with a clever name for it :) ), a lot of the current naysayers and sticks-in-the-mud who are uttering the battle-cry "We don't need widgets, leave my home screen alone" will be probably have 2-3 of them running on their ipads. :p

me...i don't use widgets on my windows machines, but i think they might actually be useful on something like a tablet because it's such a versatile, mobile device. and if i find that widgets don't work for me, then i won't use 'em. i don't undersand why some view it with such a polarizing mindset.

i find it humorous & sad that there's an segment of the forum membership who seems to be very hard-core resistant to change, especially if that change did not originate from the minds at Apple.

any product which can't or won't evolve will eventually stagnate and be passed over.

Yeah I saw that story and had to laugh. Well, if it's true, you guys get your wish. I'm fine without widgets, of course, but I have no objection to how you make your iPads look.

Apple listened.

Or they just evolved on their own. Maybe someone showed Steve something that he liked ? Then again, I do things sometimes to shut people up. (My migraines magically went away when I started handing in paperwork to the office lady that was filled out correctly :) ).

Why limit widgets to the home screen ? A finger swip across the top of the screen could bring up a drop down list, click on widget, and app opens.

Yeah, no kidding.

Why do people make up #$%& like this, does it make them feel good or something? Some people don't see the need for widgets. They might not use them. Maybe they will change their minds. So what? Nobody is keeping score (except for loser shut-ins).

I find it pathetic that you characterize other people this way and then get a jolt out of tut-tutting at this stereotype which you concocted yourself.

EDIT: Who's resistant to change? Maybe the people who go out and buy an iPad knowing full well what it's about and then can't stop wah-wah-ing 'It's not like my desktop' or 'it don't do the thing the Android do' or 'I wants a filesystem and mouse input and USB ports' or 'make it with a hinged keyboard so it's like my old computer'.

no need to make anything up...simply read thru all the posts in this thread. it's a perfect microcosm of what i was referring to. plenty of other threads to pick thru that are the same.

i have no idea what you're talking about by keeping score. something in your head, i think.

ps. what are you so defensive about? if you think my opinion is utter nonsense with no element of truth, then it shouldn't bother you so.

Yeah, no kidding.

You're right, totally defensive, my bad. When people who don't see the need for widgets start using them, you have every right to nod smugly (just keep the tittering to a dull roar).

remapping coordinates from mode switches might be too complicated to resolve in a satisfactory manner. they might choose to not allow mode switching if widgets are enabled.

it'll be interesting to see how Apple does handle this if this is a upcoming feature.

That's a good point! Currently Apps are treated as lumps of 20 that are displayed in a 5x4 or a 4x5 grid. A 7x3 grid would work in landscape and give you roughly the same number of icons. How would this fit in portrait? I guess you would end up with a 3x7 grid with 3 tall and thin widgets down the side. That doesn't sound that attractive to me.

In any case I agree that mockups often look good because they often ignore the practical realities of a situation. Marco Arment wrote a really good post replying to a redesign of Instapaper and why he can't use the changes in the mockup.

Lots of good discussion in this thread considering it's macrumors and the title of the thread is someone complaining about iOS and saying they will move to android.

The fragmentation of iOS for iPhone, and iOS for iPad is likely a hot topic at Apple. As badly as they probably want to keep them the same, the reality is with so much more screen space on an iPad they have many more options to implement features that could benefit users.

Are custom home screens or widgets the answer? Maybe. But keep in mind that many of us saw the iPad when it was first announced and were a bit disappointed. Now it's the hottest tech device on the market. Maybe, just maybe, Apple has something up their sleeve that no one has thought of doing that turns out to be great. They've done it before...

I'm hoping for a UI overhaul as well. As for the people complaining that it shouldn't, I'd bet money you guys would eat it up if apple did it lol.

I am amazed at the few posts above.
We all know it's true, well, if you have a memory and have been around there forums for a while.

Its not anything bad, but it does put a smile on your face.

What am I talking about? I mean the times when a rumour starts or a sneak peak at something is seen, and we get a wave of haters, then when it becomes true or Apple do it, it's suddenly wonderful.

Nothing bad, it's just an observation. I guess the most obvious and most recent was the hatred and condemnation over the iphone4 design, which was a cheap Chinese knock off copy and apple would never product something as badly designed as that.

Whilst there were a few people who said they liked it, they were massively in the minority.

As I say I don't really care either way, but it is a shame that many people cant seem to like something without knowing 1st who makes it. It should matter who makes something, either you like it or you don't

It's almost as if some people are afraid to admit to themselves that they may like or dislike something not made by apple.

I don't personally care who makes something. I'd like to think I will judge every device on it's own individual merits.

That first screen made me gag. Trashy!

The second screen is "meh".

I could care less about either.

Notifications and App/system navigation are important issues for Apple to address with the next iOS. I would also love wireless syncing.

Agreed but the face is not the only thing, I just put up my 1day old ASUS transformer up in the marketplace.
My daughter loves the iPad much more then the Droid.

Loves only skin deep

You see, we all have our own preferences.

To me, I have no real problem with the notification thing, and I expect many others don't know what the issue is either. Something happens and it pops up a window on screen to tell you.

Yeah, sure it could be better I guess but it does it's job.

To me, there are WAY more important things.

1: I'd like a USB port so I can plug in a Memory stick/Thumb drive and read and write files to and from it.

2: I'd like cursor keys and number keys on the "on screen" keyboard.

3: I'd like to be able to set the default web browser

4: I'd like it to run flash as all the time I'm finding myself on sites that can't function and I have to turn my PC on to use the site.

5: I'd like to be able to connect to any PC and upload/download files, not just locked to one PC only.

All of those 5 things, to me anyway are way way WAY more of a issue to me on a daily basis that the pop up notification being a bit basic.

...

I agree if ios 5 doesnt make things more usable on the springboard front I am going to be selling my ipad 2 and jumping into the new 10.1" samsung. I do however wish there was an android tablet with the same aspect ratio as the ipad

Reality check - tablets have been out about ONE YEAR. Give it a couple more years of development before you expect and demand perfection!

It is perhaps explained by an understanding of Maslow's "Hierarchy of Needs" and the concept of "self-Actualization."

Image

A fully self-actualized individual (according to Maslow) focuses on attaining his (or her) full-potential. And so for device-users the emphasis is on the Application: An artist (Hockney, Columbo) uses an App (Brushes, Sketchbook) to create artwork. A musician uses Garageband. A writer uses Pages. etc. The homescreen simply isn't that important.

Those at a lower level of self-actualization focus more on things like Self-Esteem (ie. the need to micromanage); Achievement (customizing their home screen), and Respect of Others (posting pictures of their Home Screen on the Internet.)

Maslow's "Hierarchy of Needs" explains (IMHO) the differences between Apple users and Android people.

This is brilliant and spot on.

What I don't get about the above is, according to that, you would not buy an iPad in the 1st place.

You would want to do anything to it's full potential and not be limited in any way, which by definition would mean a windows based laptop as it would give you the most open system and broadest range or possibilities and software available.

From a floppy drive (perhaps even a 5.25" with an adaptor) right up to a SSD and BluRay, and any program from something old in DOS up the the latest GPU accelerated 3D graphics programs.

Anything other is limiting your abilities.

Apple as a company, and even more so iDevices are all about limiting what you can do. That's is almost the very point of them. Giving you a nice, but very controlled and limited experience.

It would be like taking the very best chefs in the world.
They would want access to any and every single ingredient known to man to create anything they want. Whereas Apple would give them a fixed list of ingredients they have to work with.

I'm not Dissing Apple here. I'm just saying that, anyone who wants to use their full potential would never in a million years use an iDevice.
