You also need to lock changes to location settings as they could turn off find my iPhones ability to use its location.

Best solution. Try not to loose or let it get stolen ;)

In ios6, location services no longer has to be locked. All that needs to be locked is "Accounts," that will lock all info related to iCloud, including location services and tracking. It is better that way because when ever you add an app requiring location services, you do not have to unlock restrictions.

Good to know. Thanks.

Or turn off the phone.
Then get home and restore it.
Find my iPhone is not LoJack.

Don't go home and restore it. that's stupid.

Go do it at ur number1 enemy's place. lol. kidding.

But never do it at home! once it comes on and hooks up to the cellular service(internet), the location will be sent to the owner.
[but, we shouldnt be talking about this, should we!]

Jailbreak tweaks that locate stolen or lost iPhones have options that hide the app so they can not be disabled and also disables Power Off of the iPhone. Apple of course knows it is possible to do so, but providing this feature would mean functionality.

Apple should offer a GPS tracker inbuilt into the hardware. One that can't be turned off !

Like some cars have.

I'd pay a reasonable fee for that feature/spec.

How would it send the data to Apple? It needs an internet connection for that.

Yikes! It's pathetic how he tried to blame it on his wife! What man would do that?!

One who knows his wife doesn't work for the TSA and thus can't get fired from it. Probably his wife doesn't work at all and thus won't be fired from anywhere.

Of course the video evidence was quite damning anyway.

You can go from off straight into DFU restore mode. No chance of connecting and reporting location. There is no way to catch a thief if they have the least bit of intelligence. Lucky for us, most are imbeciles.

If you are on a gsm carrier, how does pulling the sim not prevent it from being located? The phone needs data to report its location. Unless the phone ends up on wifi, pulling the sim will prevent find my phone from working.

A stupid/clueless thief would probably join their own wifi network, or join someone elses open network.

If you have a pin set (not a 4 digit!!), they cannot uninstall apps. What's with the suggestions around setting restrictions? So, you'd be cool with a thief getting into your files, bookmarks, gmail, etc on a phone you apparently don't want to set a PIN on but you want the phone back after they've ha their fun? I don't get it.

And yes: they can just nuke your phone. Still, why leave the pin off?

There are thieves who can somehow get their own faces photographed on the stolen iphone, which then subsequently gets uploaded to the net. I think for most part, the general populace remains quite clueless about such features. :D

Sadly you can still turn off all location services and the GPS tracking will stop. Just tried it myself a few seconds ago. The rest of find my iPhone remains active though.

IMO find my iPhone should be completely independent of the core location services.

I always thought you should need a pass code to turn it off. It is stupid how anyone knows how to work an iPhone can turn off "Find My iPhone" very easily.

I feel like I have to keep asking this: why can't people just turn their PIN on? With a >4 character code, so it's not brute forced. Yes, the sim can get pulled. But WHY are you folks so willing to let thieves see all your data and you're getting wrapped around the axle trying to figure out what restrictions to set?

Crimes are inherently stupid activities so it's not surprising that most criminals are stupid. I bet most of them won't know better to delete Find my iPhone.

This is a carrier problem also, the fact when you call in a lost or stolen phone, the carrier merely shuts off service to that phone, if your going to have a carrier black list, all carriers must do so, apparently carrier black lists will be implemented eventually, no piece of technology is going to replace personal responsibility.

Agreed, just set a good >4 digit passcode.. no worries.

Restrictions passcode can only be 4 digit, so a general >4 pin is a safer move anyway

One Q I have tho... if you set it to erase data after 10 failed attempts, does this then disable Find My iPhone, and/or turn off location services??????????

And is the phone still locked with the pin ??????

That triggers a full wipe. Your phone is basically as-new after that.

It exists only for data protection, not for phone recovery.

How easy it is for someone to acess and iphone without the passcode if it's not jailbroken. I'm guessing it's possible by someone who knows what their doing although when I was selling an Android phone to CEX, an used electronic goods chain in the uk, they needed the passcode (They were testing it prior to buying it and whoever dealt with me at the counter forgot to get the passcode off me). CEX are professionals so if they couldn't get into a phone without a passcode I'd be surprised if it's possible obviously it might be different for an iphone.

I've spent nearly 8 yrs in jail and let me tell you Never underestimate the intelligence of a criminal. Although saying that some of them are thick as pigshit.:)

The pin is erased. The thief can turn off the phone when he or she steals it, connect it to iTunes and DFU restore it even if you set a pin. Forget about finding a stupid phone if it is lost or stolen. Set a pin and remote wipe to protect yourself from identity theft and get a new freaking phone if stolen.
