I have said this several times and I will say it again. The entire back of the phone CAN NOT be made of metal. NFC will not function if the back is all metal.

If there is a portion that is non-metallic NFC will work, but if you want it to continue to work, you will not be able to by a case that covers that portion with any sort of metal. Doesn't matter how thin the metal is.

Wow really? I think the white one looks really ugly here... Maybe its because I don't really like how the aluminum is just "randomly" (maybe there's a function, not sure though) there on the backplate. On the white one, it really stands out. At least on the black one you can barely notice it.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this phone looks weirdly unproportional and that backplate just doesn't seem to flow from the white to aluminum and black to whatever that is... If this is how the next one looks, I'm definitely sticking with my 4S. I was considering upgrading as soon as possible because I really want 4G, but if that's how it looks... :(

----------

However, if the whole thing was made of aluminum, by golly, would I have a complete change of heart. But sadly the renders aren't...

I definitely prefer the black over the white this time around. The white's back looks worse than the black does.

I'm amazed how quickly iPhone fans will settle for that design from the world's most innovate tech company.

Innovation has nothing at all to do with appearance.
Innovation is about functionality.

Definition of INNOVATION

1: the introduction of something new
2: a new idea, method, or device : novelty

Tell that to an architect. I am sure no structural designs were ever innovative...

Innovation can come from physical aspects just as it can come from technological breakthroughs.

Hell, they could innovate a new style of sim tray. That is a physical aspect of the phone and would be innovative.

Please, for humanity's sake, get an education.

I'm sure Apple will find a way...

And tell me, how much functionality can .5 inches add? Like I said, settling.

Seen many other sub-4" phones with LTE?
They didn't lengthen the phone on a whim.

You sound just like a failed architect.
Good architecture is functional above all else.
When you get your degree let us all know.

you act like it's a bad design. how long do MacBook Pros keep the same design? and iMacs?

just because it doesn't get a RADICAL NEW DESIGN doesn't mean there's something to complain about.

Broadcast NFC through front.
Broadcast NFC through edges.
Make that cutout portion glass and the edges aluminum.

Broadcast NFC through the front? LOL. Good luck with that.

Broadcast NFC Through the edges? They are metal and part of the antenna design. Won't work.

There will have to be a cutout non-metallic portion on the back of the phone, like I said.

Additionally, you have to think of usability. You really want people putting the front glass face down to use a paypass machine? Besides the obvious issues with potential scratches, you won't be able to see the transaction occur. Using the edge simply isn't an option with the iphone.

Here are some other pictures from that set of renders. And you can view the rest here.

I have to admit that the pictures of leaked parts have majorly turned me off, but seeing what it could potentially look like as a finished product does change my mind. It was the same case in 2010, when Gizmodo's unflattering iPhone 4 pictures made many people question the authenticity but once Apple officially unveiled it, many changed their minds about those horrible seams on the antenna. Sure, the iPhone shown in these renders is VERY similar to iPhone 4/4S design, but it's still a very attractive phone. It certainly looks a hell of a lot sharper and sleeker than ANY other device in the market.

The white looks sexy, not really liking the look of the black just an opinion.

  • I have an MBA.
  • Congrats on utilizing a red herring fallacy in your argument.
  • You still cannot dispute the definition of innovation.

Saw this picture over at BGR of the new iPhone. It's the same style we have been seeing from the leaks, but looks more refined and Apple-like.

If this is really what the new two-toned phone looks like, hell yeah.

Cracks me up how many people buy products solely based on looks. But that is probably the mentality of many Apple buyers.

That length vs width ratio just doesn't look right for a phone to me. I don't care for it personally.

So you'd be all about a super phone wrapped in a case that looked like a dog turd covered in grass and worms?

LOL! Wow, you missed my point by a country mile. I'm saying there is more to a product than the way it looks. If a crappy blackberry phone had that exterior would you buy it solely on the looks?

I think most people would want to like the looks of a device they spend a lot of time staring at.

This feeling is not exclusive to Apple owners, so lets not pretend it is.

No one is buying solely on looks. If you read any of my former posts you'd realize that I am all about internals. We already know many of the new features of the next iPhone. Looks are the icing on this cake.

True. I don't see any reason to switch to a android. They lost my service when my droid x would lag the hell out. Now it seems the s3 has reduced lag but I can still see some there. I don't care about the wider screen as it just makes it awkward to use with one hand.

The only thing I am jealous of is 4g. But I hear stories of reduced battery life and the phone heating up when it's in use.

They also gloat about customizing home screen. I could care less as long as my ui is smooth and I can customize plenty on my jailbreak.

So pretty much when the i5 comes out the choice will be between ****** cheap plastic phone over nicer looking and smoother device.

Don't care for the back; looks tacky IMO. Make it a solid color/texture, or at least the way the iPhone 3G was with the black part at the bottom if they must.

Makes the s3 look like a plastic piece of garbage that china made.

Where are iPhones made?

Yea and people don't buy hand bags, cars, sunglasses, shoes, etc etc etc for looks. Nothing wrong with considering the aesthetics of a product when making a purchase as long as the specs of it are decent as well.

I love the fingerprints on the back in that image.
My first thought.

Genius comic addition to render. :D

I'm still not buying this "oh it needs a metal cutout back to enable NFC" rubbish.

I have a NFC-enabled credit card which I use for purchases regularly. The chip is embedded in 0.03" of plastic.
