Probably not, especially with the plate of fail that is iOS4. I'll just jailbreak to get whatever goodies I'd be missing out on (multitasking, etc.) and steer clear from the Apple-approved methods/BS quirks :)apple: "multitasking", orientation switch change, etc)

It's safe to say that next iPads will have

1. Front facing Camera
2. 512 Ram
3. Gyroscope

The rest features will be up to apple. However, I don't see any of these changes coming to 2nd gen iPad

1. Retina Display
2. Rear Camera
3. Different Design from iPad one

I agree with most of you about iPad is too expensive to replace it every single year. I am waiting for iPad 3 or 4. I will look and see how much I can get for iPad 1 and what the differences are between iPad 1 and 2, but I am most likely to wait for iPad 3 or 4.

Why don't you think they would do Retina Display? Because of cost reasons? It's certainly something that the iPad would benefit from. ebooks look so much nicer on my iPhone 4 than my iPad, but I'd rather read on my iPad because of the size of page and text.

Got a 32 GB iPad on launch day and sold it on eBay a couple of months ago. It was okay, but would rather have a notebook. So if they can add a few more options to bridge the gap in 2.o, then I'll take a look.

I see no reason why i would need an iPad 2
my current iPad is awesome and unless apple makes some unbelievable advance, ill be sticking with iPad 1 :)

Here we go again...

By apple's definition, it has to have over 300 pixels per inch to be called retina display. Apple will have to double the resolution of current iPad.

Ebooks are just designed to read. iPad offers much more. They are not even in the same level.

Because of cost reasons? Yes. It's obvious.
Not to mention horrible battery life. If you run any OS or games at higher resolutions, you need GPU and CPU chips to back it up, period. You really think current mobile GPU/CPU out there can handle retina display on iPad and offer 10 hours of battery life? NO!

You obviously are just keep dreaming of fantasy stuff. Keep dreaming.

Yes. How? Get married.

I've given all my hand-me-downs to my wife. Sometimes even used the excuse that she needed it and hence I would be the bigger man and let her 'have' mine. Then I'd go out and buy the new one of course.

However... she's catching on lately and its becoming more of a battle each time.

Lol, I do the same exact thing. This year though I treated us both to iphone 4's, she got the 16gb wifi ipad and I got the 64gb 3g ipad though. What's nice about Apple products is you don't lose very much money on them at all, especially if you buy them subsidized. Every year we've been able to upgrade our iphones for free thanks to craigslist, and I'll bet we won't have to put too much money up next year for the ipad2 after we sell our ipad 1's on CL. I've even done this type of swap with my macbooks, I get the newest macbook air, she gets my hand me down which is only a year old, and her 2 year old goes on craigslist.

Dude, calm. I asked your reason for thinking they wouldn't do it. That's not the same as fantasising and dreaming.

depends on the features:

Facetime camera would be a reason to update unless I get a iPhone 4. Then the iPad camera is less important.

Better CPU/GPU, more Ram could be another reason.

Resale value of my old iPad on Craigslist plays into it.

Major reasons to upgrade is how well the iOS4 and the Apps will be. If the Apps and iOS don't improve vastly then my current iPad is good enough till it dies and I move on to a different platform eventually. For example if iPhoto on the iPad doesn't allow me to sort, tag, rate and even edit my Photos then the iPads usability is limited to me. Same is true if Pages doesn't become more productive. If I can't get access to my keychain passwords or set up a airport express station in a hotel then the iPad is too limited. I might then as well buy a cheap netbook for videos and sufing the web.

Maybe, couldn't care less about a camera, but now that I know how well the iPad fits into my daily routine I would like to upgrade to more storage and 3G. Plus my sister has already put her hand up for my current one

I won't upgrade until they put a high-res screen in there. When they do, though, I'm there... and I'll save my nook for trips.

especially with the plate of fail that is iOS4

"Plate of fail" might seem clever but it doesn't mean anything.

Yes I am gonna get one...

I am thinking its gonna have
1GB of ram
32GB SSD Model $499
64GB SSD Model $599
128GB SSD Model $699
3G in all models.
Front facing camera (2MP)
Rear Facing camera (5MP)
Retina Display.

I'm going to invent a device that punches the person in the face whenever they use "retina display" and "iPad" in the same sentance

Yes. We'd like a second one. For some reason, everyone in our fam wants the iPad at the same time around here.

The only thing I want is the retina display, anything else I think I can live with mine.

I'm right with you. I'm holding out for version 2 because I think it will probably have the retina display. My mom's 3GS looks dang blurry compared to my iPhone 4, and I KNOW the 3GS screen is not bad at all. Some people have mentioned the cost of it, but if Apple could cram that into the iPhone and iPod touch without increasing cost, I don't see why it couldn't do the same for the iPad. I don't remember the cost being some huge deal in the iSuppli report. The main cost was probably developing it, and that's being recouped through great sales.

I just bought an iPad V1 about 3 weeks ago. As usual I have no regrets with another Apple product so I'll buy V2 as soon as it is released. iPad is a great educational tool for children (IMO) and my 5 year old daughter uses it quite a bit. She's been using an iphone for 2 years for flash memory and learning her numbers and now she's really taken to the larger screen with the more adventure type learning titles.

I never had anything like that when I was young (40 years ago) - So I'll give her the V1 and use the V2 for myself.

If it comes with a high-res display, like the iPhone 4, I'm in. That's the main thing I'm looking for.

Obviously, selling the old one to recoup the costs. :p

Why is it that so many people seem to think that Apple can fit a GPU inside the iPad that can run a screen res around the same as a 30" Mac Cinema display and not burn through a battery in a few second flat?

To get anything you could call Retina you would need to at least double the horizontal and vertical resolution of the current screen.

That's gives you four times the amount of pixels to throw around.

There is no way on earth you could drive a display like that with a 1Ghz CPU and a battery operated low power GPU.

You could show a 2D desktop yes, and perhaps read a book, but smooth scrolling, and games etc would just not work.

In the future yes.

But it would take 4x the iPad's current power, just to make the thing as fast as the current one, let along make the device any faster.

I'd think Apple would rather the iPad be 400% faster with the current screen than the same speed but with the higher res screen.

Just imagine the games and effects you could do with a 400% speed up in CPU and GPU ability.

It's not going to happen. (Yet) or for quite a few years.

This hits the nail on the head. The iPad is too expensive for Apple to redesign and too popular for Apple to need to already make it thinner or give it big new features. You can bet on the front facing camera, 512 to even 1 GB RAM and the gyroscope. Beyond that any non-software changes are unlikely in my opinion and makes it unlikely I will buy version 2 as I bet I get the important stuff... 1) a file system and 2) integrated cloud computing from iOS 5.0 and for free or low cost.

I'll buy the 3rd generation version in 2012 that is far more likely to have significant hardware as well as software changes.

PS: For those wanting a retina like display it simply will not happen in 2011. There are no 10 inch displays with that dpi being made, if they were the cost would be crazy, and MOST importantly there is no mobile hardware in the next 12-24 months that could drive such a display with anywhere near enough horsepower to keep the iPad even at its current speed or battery life. The technology just isn't there for a device that is 10 inches, we need to wait 24-36 months and of course by then it will be possible.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned reduced weight as an important feature. I find that the iPad is not a good replacement for a lightweight, dedicated ereader such as the Kobo or the Kindle.

I think that iPad needs to be a lot lighter. That would be my feature #1 with a retina display as a close 2nd.

The only thing I miss currently is FaceTime capability but it's hardly essential as I've got my Phone when I'm out and my iMac when I'm not. I'm planning on skipping the 2nd generation and probably replacing my current iPad with a 3rd generation when it comes out in a few years.
Having said that, if they load it with 1GB of RAM and 256GB SSD, then I'll be at the front of the queue :D

i may or may not get it for my girlfriend.
i already have the iPad. all i really use it for is surfing.
i dont think the new model will have any new killer web surfing features, so i won't be buying it for myself.

I obviously would have to see what features the iPad 2 will have, but I will consider to buy the MacBook Air 11.6", keeping the first generation iPad.

I love iOS, and it's a perfect companion for OS X, but sometimes —*while using the iPad — I really miss OS X for some tasks.
The MacBook Air is like an iPad with a real keyboard + OS X.

And — personally — I wouldn't see the Air 11.6" and the iPad overlapping.
