God, I hope the web browser is faster.

I generally use my main computer as I get fed up with the speed on the iPad in rendering web pages.

Don't get me wrong it's OK and it's USABLE, it's just way slower than a desktop computer.

I'm guessing it's the CPU and GPU power that's causing this, and I am comparing it to a desktop machine an order of magnitude more powerful so I can't really expect the iPad to be as fast.

I just hope they make it faster, so that reasonably heavy pages, such as engaget don't take a whilse and I'm scrolling down the site again and again into a bare checkerboard pattern.

I completely agree, and it would be nice to see a significant improvement. I know it's a rather odd statement that will get jumped all over, but I just hate how my iPad web surfing experience seems too similar to my iPhone experience.

On topic though, I'll probably end up getting one and handing my v1 down to my father. He's "intrigued" by it, but he doesn't have the nerve to actually buy his own.

I'm fine for storage, RAM and processor right now. The only apparently "obvious" feature that many people want is the front-facing camera for FaceTime. But that's not something I want. I love FaceTime, but I don't think I'd use it on the iPad. It would be horrible, unless you love the prospect of people using technology in order to show people on the other side of the world what their nostrils look like.

The upgrade will need a killer feature and one that I know I will use. Right now, I can't imagine what that would possibly be. I don't need a camera on my iPad.

Just about where I am. I expect to wait for at least gen 3. I use my Ipad for just about everything and many things I didn't expect to use it for and some things i hadn't even imagined. Its turned out to be much better than I could have imagined and a laptop uograde isn't in my future. I mainly use my desktop for photo processing and a few business things. With Dropbox and terrific apps I handle most things on the Ipad so I can see a possible need for more memory/processing power in the future but I haven't really come up against it yet with the 64GB. The cameras don't interest me at all.

I'll probably get one no matter what because my girlfriend keeps borrowing mine. All I really want is:

-- Higher resolution screen, at least 1440x1080 would be a huge improvement for text rendering especially (that would be about double the number of pixels in the current model). iBooks is barely acceptable now, it could look a lot better.

-- Maybe a little faster CPU, possible dual core (but I think that's unlikely for the next gen).

-- More RAM to alleviate the annoying Safari cacheing issues, help with the increased strain that multitasking will place on it, and provide for more shared GPU texture memory.

-- Lighter weight while maintaining the same battery life. This one will be tricky, but one possibility is replacing the glass screen with something like Gorilla Glass. A more energy efficient CPU and WiFi components may also allow shaving a bit of battery away. I don't know if I'd necessarily describe the current iPad as "too heavy", because I use it constantly, but it's not really light either. Something around 1.1-1.3 pounds (vs. 1.5) would make a big difference.

-- GPS built into the Wi-Fi only model.

That's really about it. I don't see the price coming down much, but then I think it's an amazing bargain for what it can do for $500.

Without a doubt, I will try to sell my iPad and then buy the new one. I have had three iPhones, so...

I've said this before :)

But apart from Ram, perhaps a gyro and 1 or two camera's I can see almost nothing else changing for next year.

Perhaps a small CPU/GPU boost, but that's about it.

Tweaking the Apps will also get done.

I really don't see much more happening that that for the Mk2 model.

I may see myself upgrading to iPad 2, depending on what gets upgraded. Fortunately, this is not that expensive a piece of hardware (on the low end), so one doesn't set me back that much. I wouldn't do the same for something that's like $1000 or anything.

Yes, because what ever Apple offers will be reason enough to upgrade -- I don't see them releasing iPad 2 the same as iPad 1 but with a camera (in that case, I probably wouldn't).

I want a retina display.

This hits the nail on the head. The iPad is too expensive for Apple to redesign and too popular for Apple to need to already make it thinner or give it big new features. You can bet on the front facing camera, 512 to even 1 GB RAM and the gyroscope. Beyond that any non-software changes are unlikely in my opinion and makes it unlikely I will buy version 2 as I bet I get the important stuff... 1) a file system and 2) integrated cloud computing from iOS 5.0 and for free or low cost.

I'll buy the 3rd generation version in 2012 that is far more likely to have significant hardware as well as software changes.

PS: For those wanting a retina like display it simply will not happen in 2011. There are no 10 inch displays with that dpi being made, if they were the cost would be crazy, and MOST importantly there is no mobile hardware in the next 12-24 months that could drive such a display with anywhere near enough horsepower to keep the iPad even at its current speed or battery life. The technology just isn't there for a device that is 10 inches, we need to wait 24-36 months and of course by then it will be possible.

This is 100% true. No way apple will be able to make 10 inch display with Apple Cinema display resolution. Retina Display is coming to iPad, but it is not coming until like iPad 3 or 4. Probably iPad 4. I am glad to see someone who is thinking straight. Those of you who are crying for Retina Display. Tsk tsk...

+1. Apple will put enough new things to tempt first gen owners, while winning over most people who weren't sure before. They'll think of new features you never thought you needed, and they'll do the same for the next gen after that, and the next one after that, etc. Just like iPhone, it'll probably be around v4 or 5 before the IPad becomes a more matured and complete device.

I'm still waiting in line for version 2 though.:D

Wow, really good point. I forgot about the rumors of a smaller screen. The screen size is perfect for me now, so any smaller is a no go. I will just use the iPhone if the screen gets smaller.

If it turns out that the iPad 2 has hardware support for making me a morning Espresso, without the DST bug, I'm totally in.

You know what's great about the internet? People can have their own ideas and not have to explain them to people like you ;) I dislike iOS4, capische?

So what's the point of tossing something out there if you can't provide specifics to back it up? I'm not saying you might not have legitimate reasons to dislike iOS 4, but without providing context, your comment is, as noted, meaningless.

If there's no camera, more ram, and retina display, I'm not even gonna bother.

However, I'll most likely sell my current iPad if I do purchase the next gen one.

The #1 reason I dislike iOS4 is Apple's version of multitasking and the task manager. I guess I just got to used to using Kirikae and Backgrounder on iOS 3.x.x. I don't care what anyone else does, it's just unfortunate to me that the end of the line in my Apple device purchases seems to be a 3GS on 3.1.3 and an iPad on 3.2.2, both jailbroken and running Backgrounder and a jailbroken task manager (Kirikae and Circuitous).

Plus, I missed my pwnapple boot logo for months while I was on 4.x, but now it seems the new version of redsn0w can change the default, so good on them.

It is shiny and from Apple isn't it? I'm in... ;)

Seriously though - I expect the next iPad at minimum to
* have more RAM (at least 512mb)
* slightly faster processor (I don't think they will go dual core yet)
* Front Camera
* Back Camera

That isn't enough for me to update on it's own merits, but since the whole family is enjoying the iPad I'll probably update and pass on my current iPad to someone else in the family.

I seem to read a lot of similar sentiments in threads like these over lo these 7 or so short months, and it's both noble and practical...

That is, until the family sees your shiny new iPad v2 that not only shoots lasers, but does this from its awesome new RETINA DISPLAY!!! Then, they'll need new iPads, too, but in true nobility and family spirit, your current v1 one will simply be handed down to the dog.

Everybody wins.

p.s. no "retina display" until 2013, pass it on. :)

Nah. I'm probably going to do the same thing that I did with the iPhone - I got the original when it was new, and then kept it until earlier this year. I'll probably keep with my iPad until the third or fourth generation, and the new features not supported by mine are just too amazing and then upgrade.

No. They'll add some cameras and some RAM. Don't care all that much about either. I dont get caught up in all that hype. I don't need the newest - I don't roll with a set of folks who even come close to caring about such a thing.

More than likely, but I'll wait to see what Apple deliver first.

I'm sure it will feature a slightly higher resolution screen, but obviously not 300+ppi, as many people have said. If they stick with 4:3 at the same screen size, then there's a general choice of 1280x960 (165ppi), 1400x1050 (180ppi) or 1600x1200 (206ppi) screens. Even a QXGA screen would only be 264ppi. Only the first and last of those those scale up to nice round numbers though. However, increasing the screen resolution means upgrading from the current A4, and you're also going to need appropriate batteries to power it all without getting too hot or heavy.

I would like a nice 1GB of RAM, but I'm sure it'll just be 512mb.

The new iPad will almost certainly feature Face Time as a major selling point, so we can at least assume there will be a front camera.

:apple:

Don't own the 1st Generation, Depending on the price and the product quality I might consider the 2nd g.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

No, the iPad is too expensive to replace every year, so I plan to wait until either the 3rd generation or 4th generation, unless the price is lowered significantly.

I disagree. I think it is very affordable. Especially if you sell the old one, you only have to shell out a couple hundred dollars.

Before 2 weeks ago, I would have said yes. Now, after using an android phone, I am not sure. I love being on a mobile OS and having some resemblence of a file system. Ie: I can attch photos to MR from my phone without using a 3rd party photo hosting service.
