The iFixit picture actually doesn't show it. It's actually under the left most small battery. It's just a silver empty area in the pic, but otherwise there's a black thing (speaker maybe).

Ok then I'll avoid dell. I've owned Compaq and HP both I got dirt cheap. Ran them to the ground. Squeezed every penny out of it. Great value.

The Compaq was like 200 and the HP was 550.

EDIT: Which makes me realize, I could have bought 8 Compaqs for the price of ONE (1) MBPr and been set for about 40 years, assuming they last 5 years average.

FML

FML, not...

The problem with buying 8 Compaqs is that you'd get one, maybe two of them used during their useful technological life and the rest would be paperweights or eBay nostalgia going for pennies on the dollar or less.

I wouldn't say don't buy Dell, just don't have unrealistic expectations.

Windows For Life, seriously y'all this is too much for me. I've had it with Apple.

That has nothing to do with Windows. There are other PC makers who have equipment *FAR* worse than Apple's for the price. Just as there are PC makers who have equipment that is better than Apple's for the price.

Windows has nothing to do with it.

Maybe they don't make them like they use to?

I have been windows all my computing life. I tried Mac first last year with a 2011 well used Pro and swapped it for a mint 2011 Air also to try. My dad got it and still uses it. I stuck with my almost 3 year old Samsung gaming laptop. Mac OS was a big change.

This year a matter of weeks ago Apple pulled me back and i got my rMBP.

True Windows worked well for me 98% of the time but i like the software, build, look and feel of my Mac... But not the scary stories i read on this forum.

I have a windows work laptop. That thing blows and its a high end enterprise model. Much rather use my MBP.

But not the scary stories i read on this forum.

You'll always have scary stories and complaints on any consumer forum, as folks simply just tend to complain.

I'm on my 3rd day with my new to me early 2013 rMBP, and am adjusting to OS X just fine.

OP - Having read your posts on here for awhile, and just seen some of your youtube videos - I think you may have Aspergers, buddy.

Annyywayy - by "go back" to windows, do you mean install windows in bootcamp or as a virtual machine? You know, since Macs allow you to easily dual boot both, unlike windows systems and OS X...?

Or do you mean, actually spend money on a non-mac system and be out of OS X?

Because, nooo. After 3 years with OS X, it really is much, much better than windows. And the windows laptops I owned/used in the past really sucked in comparison. Talk about creaks and plastic! The windows laptop we have at work absolutely sucks.

Have fun if that's what you want, but take time to process your emotions before you do something rash or act brash.

I have a MBPr. I came from 3 windows laptops.

I love it. It's great. Mail, calendar, etc are all very convenient.

But when this thing dies, I'm going back to Windows.

I paid $1585, and I'm sick of the the little things.

For example, it was running hot because of dust.

Then I opened it, cleaned the dust and now it runs faster and cooler, but now it creaks.

I rather just spend $500 bucks so if it creaks crackles and pops, I won't care.

For $1585, it just annoys me so much. Now that I'm no longer under warranty, they want $29 just for talking about it.

I have a 15" Retina and I came from three Windows laptops as well. I would never go back to any Windows-based laptop.

I opened up my case once just so I could see that beautiful industrial design in person, and when I screwed it back together, it creaked when I lifted it up with one hand at either of the corners. So I unscrewed it and tightened them like you would on a wheel hub, like this:

And the creaking was gone!

Trust me, you would mind when that creaking in a $500 laptop leads to broken screw bosses and a hinge that pries the housing open from the inside, causing unrepairable damage.

Hey thanks for this. I actually did something very similar and the creaking *SEEMS* to be gone.

But if not I'll give this drawing a try! Looks promising.

Apple would make something as simple as screwing the back lid ridiculously complex lol

My rMBP, from which I am typing is, is flat-out the best computer I've ever used, let alone owned, and I do software development for a living.

On my own equipment, Windows will be relegated to an "as I have to" basis using a virtual machine (Parallels or Fusion).

Update:

I used this technique in the picture. Hopefully it works. Thanks for taking the trouble to help me out with this.

P.S. I've been reading everyone's comments. I agree. Basically what makes a Mac a Mac is the OS. I love Mavericks too. It's simply *awesome*

To be frank, there are no words that describe how good Mavericks is. It's flawless.

Works every time, no issues, none, notta, 0, big fat goose egg lol.

Last night I was using preview. Most of you might think "Eh, big deal, what's so great about preview?"

Well, the fact that you can highlight in different colors, add notes in different colors, have a customized side panel, it blows my mind :D

I love the fact that even when you highlight, it looks like it has been highlighted on a piece of paper. It's beautiful.

Now, is the OS worth $1585? Eh, well, if someone paid me $1,100 to use Windows instead of Mac...it's temping (given you can get a Windows laptop for $500), but whatever. It is what it is.

So you are not happy with it because you use it in an untidy and unhygienic environment for dust to be such an issue and you can't put it back together properly after you opened it up? Ok.

No, I'm not happy with it because Apple makes crappy hardware. Ok?

It wasn't creaking before you took it apart to clean it, so it's your fault for not putting it back together properly.

Apple make exceptional hardware, and should there have been an issue with your notebook I'm sure they would have helped you resolve it. You just sound unhappy because it's cost you a lot of money and you don't really think it's worth the money. That's fine, but don't blame it on the fact that you struggled to reassemble it properly.

Nah. Apple makes atrocious hardware. You need to do the research before posting. Go to YouTube and see all the unhappy customers with creaky Macs. It's 100% Apple's fault. People just want to believe Apple is perfect and are in denial of the truth.

It wasn't creaking before you took it apart. You said this in your own words.

Maybe learn how to line components up & tighten screws properly...

Maybe Apple should learn how to make good hardware that doesn't creak? Then I won't need to learn how to tighten screws properly huh?

Anything will creak if you unscrewed it and didn't put it back together correctly. It creaks because there's movement. Take it apart again and put it back together properly and it will go away. Or just take it into an Apple store and I'm sure someone will spare 10 mins to help you out. Or just continue ranting like a loon with your creaking machine.

You. Are. Not. Supposed. To. Take. Apart. Your. Mac!

It's not designed to be taken apart. If you took it apart and failed to put it back properly, then it's your own fault. It's also your own fault for taking it apart in the first place.

In fact if I remember right, even taking out the back panel will void the warranty.

I think the creaking is gone thanks to the guy who posted the pic. I re-screwed it the way he said and I *think* it's gone...we will see.

I'm not ready to declare victory just yet. Let me give it a couple days and see if it comes back.

It's Apple's fault. It's not my fault in the least bit. They should make it so that it doesn't creak.

Seriously, how is it MY fault that Apple makes crappy hardware? Radeongate anyone? Anetennagate? Bendgate?

Can't deny the truth. You can get a PC for less than 1/3 the price and if it creaks, at least you saved $.

The trade off is you won't get really good, flawless, software (Mavericks *thumbs up*)

Check out these guys. Apple has a creaking problem. I should send this link to T. Cook letting him know (it may have been fixed for the 2015 model though).

At the Palm rest.

And you should be able to open it, clean out dust, and put it back without creaking.

Anyone who seriously thinks this isn't an issue search on this forum for creaking.

The late 2013 has a design problem for MANY users.

I had 3 windows. Were there problems? YES!

Was the build quality not nearly as good? YES!

Was it dirt cheap and worked excellent 99% of the time? YES!

There you go. Windows laptops, many of them are garbage compared to Macs in terms of quality yadda yadda

But they're dirt cheap, and work just fine almost all the time. That's the difference.

With Macs you pay the money, then find yourself at the genius bar.

Don't believe me? Visit one. Good luck getting an appointment

My MBP is over 3 years old, never had to take it to the Genius Bar. Only time we ever made an appointment was for my wife's iPad and was able to get one the next day. This past weekend I had to actively use Windows for the first time in months. Did not like the experience.

I used IBM/Lenovo business laptops for years. Much better build quality than most Windows laptops but still lacked in many areas to the Mac. I cannot see myself ever buying another Windows machine. At my age, 64, I don't need that kind of aggravation in my life.

Oh please. Of course it's designed to be taken apart. Unibody MacBook Pros are dramatically easier to take apart than any other laptop Apple has made. Removing a handful of screws and lifting the back cover off is not some difficult engineering feat that only experts should attempt.
