I actually wouldn't mind ads on a fridge if every single ad was for local produces that you could order straight away on the fridge screen. It would make sense to me, and help me, and hopefully help local farms. They can get lost with any other type of advertisement.

At what point did companies decide that users needed to be spied on in order to torture us with ads and artificial intelligence?

Or.. just don’t connect it to your WiFi in the first place. It’s just a compressor in an insulated box with pressurized tubing. It doesn’t need WiFi.
I bet a lot of the “smart features” are internet enabled. If someone spent that kind of money on their appliance already for those (albeit a bit excessive) features, they don’t deserve to have to make the choice of turning off the features or getting ads shown in their kitchen.

Whether you can block the ads or not, it shows the mindset of all these companies. The customer now comes a distant 3rd after profit, shareholders, and now advertisers. Maybe it's just me but i would give my money to a company that put the product and me equal first.

...Samsung's decision to include ads on the Family Hub refrigerators has come as a surprise to many customers because the fridges have been available for years now. Many who bought the refrigerator without any expectation that it would show ads will now be subject to advertising. There will undoubtedly be customers unaware that they can opt out of the ads, because Samsung has decided to turn ads on by default.

Surprise? No, absolutely not. For years they have doen this on their "smart" TV's. Ads and mining your behaviour is more important to them than having an easy to use TV. Read the EULA of their TV's... its horrible.

A fridge is technically one of the simplest home appliances, it doesn't need a screen or wifi at all.

iPhone 17 Pro Max with 2 TB: $2000
iPad Pro 11” with 2 TB, plain glass, no cellular: $2000
iPad Pro 13” with 1 TB, plain glass, no cellular: $1900
M4 Pro Mac mini with higher CPU, 48 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD: $2000
Mac Pro (base model): $7000

All of these will come with ads in Maps if Apple does this.

Please don’t rationalize this crap, MacRumors.

agreed. This article is exceedingly annoying.
Pure whataboutism.
Apple ads in maps are just as bad as Samsung ads on fridge.

Honestly at this point just move over to Reddit, what's the point of Macrumors?

Can't wait until home appliances start selling us subscriptions.

Would you like the light inside your fridge to work every time you open the door? Unlock this feature for only $1.99 per month.

I don’t understand this arcticle honestly. So, just because Samsung is doing it as well suddenly makes this practice ok and acceptable?
I think it’s more about showing people that thought ads in Maps was the end of the world that it can always get worse.
But yeah, ads in Maps are bad and a step in a very wrong direction.

Would not surprise me if smart phones had ads even using any apps. About to set a wake up alarm, 15 second ad pops up. In the Settings app, 20 second ad.

Wish someone else other than Samsung made one. They are horribly under powered and slow, not to mention the app selection is terrible. If I had options my next one would not be Samsung.
